Question 13 of 14 in Naming Beneficiaries

A funeral director requests that life insurance policies be made payable to him or her or to the funeral home. Supposedly this will simplify matters at the time of death. Is this a good idea?

No, it would be much better and wiser to designate someone else (not the funeral home) as the beneficiary or beneficiaries. Designating the funeral home as your beneficiary may not be in your best interest. The funeral home may go out of business, and there would be no one to control the expenses charged by the funeral home if the funeral home is your beneficiary.

You should also assign a contingent beneficiary in case the primary beneficiary predeceases you. And, you should do a periodic review of all your beneficiary designations and change them, should this become necessary.
