"The short. Assurant is either extremely incompetent or deliberately withholds payments. Either way they are a company to abhor."

"Liers. Increased my rates without warning. Tricked me into thinking my rate would be low and then added 100/monthly-a 33% increase. Then they don't pay what they promise to pay. They left me with a 1000 bill as part of my physical."

"It is not just Assurant's terrible coverage that made my experience with them unpleasant. Even when I went to visit doctors or practitioners within their network the offices would frequently tell me that the information provided on my insurance "card" actually a printed piece of paper didn't go through or was insufficient. Then the office and the company would have to play phone tag until the issue was resolved leaving me in limbo. This happened countless times--at pharmacies doctor's offices specialists urgent care even though Assurant "assured" me that the information on the "card" should be sufficient."

"This is a complete waste of money. They don't cover anything. The amount they pay verse the amount you pay is a joke. The money I wasted paying them could've gone to this 6000 medical bill I now have to pay out of pocket....they suck"

"This company will put you through the ringer. I was lied to from the broker when I signed up. I had a huge deductable and the company never paid on 2 of my medical bills that was filed with them. Not to mention they said they never received paperwork from a doctors office until I pushed them to look at the day I gave them when it was sent."

"SCAM Better off without insurance than with this company. Worst dental insurance EVER Today was the first time I went to the dentist with this insurance and even the dentist said this was the worst " coverage" he has come across. I paid 100 per month to assurant and they will only pay a max of 100 for any procedure WTH so why even have insurance? I may as well save the 100 I pay them each month and use it towards the dentist directly. WoW what a scam. Glad I found this out sooner than later. Only got ripped off for a couple months. NO more... Don't fall for the attractive low monthly premium. They don't pay anything for your treatment. Can't say it enough WORST EVER"

"On the surface the policy premiums seem comparable and little less expensive than others. However as others have documented once a claim is filed there are a host of things they will not pay. Birth control pills is one of them They paid a maximum of 75 for a physical leaving me with the balance of 100 to pay instead of paying ZERO like I did with my previous policy. I cancelled this policy to be effective 9/1/2013. They charged my credit card anyway. It has been 6 weeks and trying to get my money back has been a nightmare. DO NOT PURCHASE INSURANCE FROM THIS COMPANY"

"Had a traumatic amputation of my left index finger requiring emergency surgery. Assurant paid less than half the cost leaving me with over 8000 to pay out of pocket. I would never recommend this company to anyone."

"If you need medical attention it is a terrible Health Insurance Company. They will bait you with "lower" premiums than BCBS for example but they cover virtually nothing. You should expect to pay huge out-of-pocket expenses. What does this mean? They will take your monthly premium AND you will also pay for virtually everything else on your own. It is very close to having no insurance at all in return for your monthly premium. I feel completely vulnerable with this insurance and am switching next month. It is particularly terrible for families."

"I had to go on short-term disability due to necessary back surgery. These guys have done nothing but screw me ever since. I'm supposed to receive 60% of my pay every two weeks which does not happen. I never know when the check will be here but I know it won't be on time. They don't seem to realize I still have bills to pay and have to pay them at specific dates. Also they seem to "discover" something every week that results in me getting paid less. They haven't covered half of the medical expenses they were supposed to and the rep I have been dealing with seems to not even know what their policies cover or how to do basic math. Worst company ever."

"Had some tests done that the Drs. office contacted Assurant Health to get approval. The approval was given but after the test were done Assurant Health would not pay. Cost out of pocket was over 1700. Explained to agent before purchacing insurance about a scan that my wife needs twice a year and asked if it would be covered. Supposely he checked and assured me that it would be covered. However when we went to schedule the scan it was refused. Have had very few claims paid by Assurant Health. In my opinion put the money for the premiums in savings...you'll get more."

"my wife found this company while doing research and we spoke to an agent. He told us this was the perfect plan for new familys. He told us we would have a 35.00 co-pay for dr. visits and that the most we would pay for the prescriptions my wife and i take regularly would be 15.00. sorry to say my first prescription was 131.50 and my 2nd was 262.30. I was blown away when they told me the price we called Assurant and they said oh no we don't pay any on prescriptions until you meet a 5000 deductable. We told them our agent told us different because we would have never done this. He says look around at walmart and places like that theres gotta be cheaper places. Ha 262.30 just like everywhere else a complete scam and our agent just plays dumb."

"This company is the worst health insurance I have ever had. I took out the plan in 2010 then the fall of 2012 had heart failure so far my bills are 30000.00 and out of that they have only paid about 2000.00 and I am not done yet they devastated my life at 63.25 on a 1000.00 is not a good thing. They dont pay hardly anything."

"We chose Assurant over several other companies because they had been recommended by our State Farm Agent. After a year I was in need of a medical procedure. It was surgical but handled as outpatient. Assurant covers inpatient up to 250000. They only cover out patient to 10Kthats right 10K Yes it was in the fine print but never mentioned by our agent. We got stuck with 20000 in medical bills. Oh how I wish I had gone with another company. The worst part was they still werent the cheapest. Avoid at all costs"

"I have an individual plan. When I checked the premium on their web site for new customers for the same policy I have new customers get the policy for 242/mo. I am being charged 451/mo. I have had the policy for 15 yrs but cant change because of pre-existing conditions. They raised my rate by 58 last year. Colorado state division of insurance said the increase was legal so the govt doesnt really provide any protection against insurance company ripoffs."

"My insurance agent led me to believe I was covered 80/20 for out patient surgery. When I called the company to ask they had said I was and the hospital had called me and said I had to pay a 200.00 deductable. When all was done and then the bills came in. My surgery was around 15000.00 between hospital and surgeon and others involvedand my insurance company only paid about 1200.00. Said they do not pay for out patient surgery. I tried for 4 months including my agent checking into why they didnt. He then called me and said I should of stayed in hospital to get coverage and not to pay the bills. It would not go on my credit."

"We went with Assurant because they were the only insurance plan that had a maternity coverage that would allow us to get pregnant after 3 months instead of the usual 12 month wait. They came recommended from one of the online insurance resellers. This is a private insurance plan for our family. We have a 5K individual deductible. The first year we paid 500 / month. After the Obama plan came out rates jumped to 830/month. Last week they alerted us our plan would go to 996/month because of the new baby. Not only that but its been almost a full-time job for my wife to chase after them for literally every claim submitted to them by our doctors. Almost every time excuse after excuse usually blaming things on bad coding weve been able to get them to resolve things after months of back and forth but its a battle. Luckily my wife is a trained journalist and knows how to fight things to the end to get the truth out. Be ready for incompetent people though. One lady told my wife once it would have been more advantageous financially to have a miscarriage. Crazy stuff. Its been exhausting enfuriating. After 2 years were calling it quits and were switching. Absolutely a horrible experience."

So far I have seen my gyno had a mammo had a mole on my should checked out visited the ER with my daughter and had vaccinations. The plan has paid exactly as laid out. I have paid above and beyond my premium about 250 for all of the services I have received if I had a deductible I would have easily paid five times that for the same exact service I have also saved about 100/ month on my premiums compared to my previous health policy. I love Assurant and will never have a policy with a deductible again"

"This is the WORST Insurance Co. I have ever dealt with. It is to our misfortune that we bought this insurance and was so misled, (due to cost). We purchased this policy in May 2010 and In Oct had to have Triple by-pass, it was not a decision that we could say yes or no to..It had to be done immediatley. Well, this insurance out of $130,000 in just hospital bills paid $14,000.00. I have never been so devastated in all of my life. And when you call the agents office..no return phone calls. Just that I should of read the policy..Well I have had Insurance all of my life and never had to read a whole policy..I did read the front page and was satisfied with what it stated. To all of you folks out there BEWARE..They should not be allowed to even sell such..I have at this time Contacted the Ins. Commissioner for the State of Florida in hopes that I can at least help someone from falling into the same trap as I did."

"I originally purchased insurance with Time insurance 22 years ago. The name has change to Fortis and now Assurant. Good news is I am a healthy person, and never made a claim to them? Now after the yearly premium increases of $50-75/ year, I received notice that my premium is now increasing almost $200 per month. I contacted customer service and had the lovely rep who could care less about talking with me or keeping me with their company. Told me I could increase my deductible and out of pocket to $7500/ year and remove the office visit co-pays from the policy and I could still be paying $150-200 more a month than other top rated companies are quoting me. Wow, been loyal for all these years, but they could care less about me canceling my policy with them....oh well, I guess they can figure out where they are going to get that $800+/month. Would not recommend this company to anyone based on their outrageous premium increases."

Even after I hit the 5k deductible they would pester over everything. I am a diabetic and I use 3 vial of humulog pre-month. They would only pay for one. However, most of the agents I talked with are not aware of the healthy discount appeal or the amount of time it takes to appeal the desciion. If you want to appeal your healthy discount, I suggest asking for a supervisor. "

I have left countless requests for a manager to call me and one never does. They do not help me with my billing problems, rather their policy seems to be to push me off to someone else. Asthma a 8000.00 rider even tho I only use one inhaler seldom, and sinus issues a 5000.00 rider, these riders are on top of the 5000.00 deductible I have to pay. They are dishonest, the salesmen NEVER said you will not have prescription drug coverage he just kept saying take advantage of the health care savings plan. I had no idea it ment I would not have any coverage why would someone that needed a inhaler at times opt for a plan with no prescription coverage. And now I had to go to the er for a few hours now they want all updated info on me and I think they are trying to say I had something preexisting. I am going to dump them here soon. "I purchased Assurant Health a year ago that included doctor office visits. The company requires that you sign an automatic withdrawal from your checking account so they can take their monthly payments on their time. During this period my family moved from Virginia to Florida and were informed that the premiums would change within $100 either way. Last summer we made 3 doctor office visits. Assurant refused to pay the bills and I was forced to dispute the charges with them. It took the company 5 months to finally determine that they would pay for most of it. Now we received a new insurance premium this month with less than 3 weeks to find a new insurance company because they have just raised our premiums from $570.49 monthly to $1,493.02 presumably because we now live in Florida even though my husband and I are both in perfect health and between the ages of 43 - 52. This insurance triple!"

"This company seems to put a great deal of energy into finding reasons to deny claims. Providers have found them difficult to deal with in submitting and processing claims. Also, when I submitted my second claim, their "New Policy Benefit Review" office requested that I fill out a form giving them a list of every single health care provider I had seen in the previous 5 years, supposedly in order to be able to evaluate whether my claim fell under an exclusion for pre-existing condition, even though this duplicates information provided with my original application. They seem to be trying to delay or avoid paying claims by overwhelming providers and insureds with requests for paperwork."

It was set to come out of my account on the 2oth. Well the 20th came and went, no draft. Then suddenly on the 25th it comes out of my account! Causing my account to be in the negative on Thanksgiving Eve, thus rendering it impossibke for me to travel to my families home, no gas, no funds. My efforts to get Assurant to immediately correct the mistake was met with "We cannot correct it for at least 10 days". They admitted the mistake, I insisted they play back the recorded conversation in which the rep assured me there would be no draft even. But they still will not correct their error immediately. Thus my Thanksgiving is ruined, I have filed a dispute through my bank. I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy."

During this time, the medical providers then sent my claims to collecting agencies. The representative were unhelpful, and said if I wanted to help, I can get the records for them. Insurance companies should work for the people that pay the premiums (as they increase). At the end of it, they denied my claims and called it pre-existing condition. The next day, they immediately sent the conclusion of this review to all providers relinquishing any responsibility. They are terrible, and I would advise not to go with them. "We carry a $5000 deductible to keep premiums low while protecting against the catastrophic. This past year we had accidents that took us over that $5000 deductible. So far claims are being handled without our intervention. In the real world the only way to keep costs down is to be involved in the care. We have a vested interest when we know we will participate in the payment. All health care providers will work out payment plans. We are thankful that this system is still available in our country. If we complain without handling responsibility we may regret what we get. Be sure to check other sources of information. Be proactive, not reactive. If we could have perfection on Earth what would ever draw us on to Eternity?"

Assurant sent, in reply, that they have determined this lab test should only cost $7, but out of the kindness of their hearts, they would allow $12 toward the deductible for this lab test. 2008 (my deductible was met) -- Our hospital's imaging dept. did an MRI on my knee, finding a mass in the joint which was affecting my walking. Assurant said they charged several hundred dollars more than it should have for the MRI. The imaging department gave us a 20% discount, but Assurant is only reimbursing their determined cost, so we still owe several hundred $$ for the test even though I had met my $5,000 deductible. 2009 -- I just had the knee surgery and now I am waiting to hear just how many hundreds (thousands?) of $$ they won't count toward my deductible."

"Assurant Health is a total scam. I lost my job last October and decided to get temporary individual health insurance. My local agent (soon to be my ex-agent) recommended Assurant Health. Then one day the following January I got extremely thirsty and my vision became blurry. I went to the local hospital and was diagnosed with type II diabetes. I spent 4 days in ICU. The next week I encountered problems with their customer service. Their website quit working. And when calling their 800 number; which is the most horrendous automated voice response system ever put into use; their people; who are even worse than the automated voice system; stated that they never had a website ! On this one issue I had to deal with their crappy voice system and incompetent, lying people for a couple of days. In the end it turns out that they had recently made changes to their network infrastructure. So why couldn't their people just admit that ? Now a little over a month later they are questioning paying my hospital bills because "THEY"; not any doctor; say diabetes takes years to develop. And therefore I was a diabetic before being diagnosed, therefore I was diabetic before starting the policy, therefore it was a pre-existing condition, and therefore they will not pay. I've since found out that Assurant Health is being investigated by 15 states for fraud, has a pattern for challenging every expensive claim as "pre-existing condition", and has many lawsuits against them for "bad faith" and denying claims. Stay away from Assurant health !"

It was simply a bacteria, not even a disease. They are hard to get a hold of and their information collecting company is incompetent. "

"They paid all of the claims I has in a timely matter. After the 2 yr. rate guarantee, I called my agent and re-wrote a new plan and got another 2 yr. rate gurantee instead of keeping the old plan at a higher rate."

"I had health insurance with Assurant for 4 years. I have no health problems and never made a claim. Over the 4 years, my premiums increased an average of 39% per year. I would never recommend this company because I hear they do everything in their power to never pay claims--suddenly losing claims or finding ways to get out of paying claims according to my friends--stay clear of this company...."

"Don't waste your money with this company. Claims have been handled slowly, and not paid due to a change of policy number when it is "renewed" each November 1. They have falsely used physican information that claims are pre-existing conditions. In several decades, we have never used an insurance company as untrustworthy when it comes to dealing fairly and ethically."

"All my claims have been handled quickly and effiently and whenever I call to check on something I get a human usually is less than one minute who is very helpful and seems to know what's going on. Yeah, the customer service people usually have an accent but it's not foriegn, just northern thing."

"I have to say out of the companies to choose from I would definately choose Assurant. They are one of the most affordable companies out there, not sacrificing coverage. You have to make sure you get the right policy..Choose SuiteSolutions to add to coverage!!! Helps with the deductible! Makes it $100. I had to have stitches, cost was $1,500, I paid $100! Great policy, Great company! Hands Down...."

"They do not disclose how the claim was processed and after repeated calls they pay some percent. Different errors in billing like "out of network" for in-network taxid and "existing conditions not covered" reasons for new conditions."

"I have been fighting with assurant for a year to pay for a cancer biopsy. I called before I had it performed and they said it was covered under my plan. Now they're trying to say it's a pre-existing condition, though it's not. It's impossible to work with them. I've spent literally 20 hours on the phone trying to get a single claim paid. Every time there's more documents, more releases, more resubmissions -- it's like they're trying to wait it out. Based on other news reports I've read, it's an endemic problem. It's the worst customer service I've ever encountered in my life. I've dealt with numerous insurance companies, and I've never had this sort of problem with any other. I think Assurant is a very expensive scam. They're a horrible, awful company and I can't stress enough to stay away from them. If anyone from Assurant is reading this, I would really like to know how you sleep at night. "

"These people would not accept certain blood tests, and I would be charged the full rate. Not the contract rate. I appealed and never heard from them again. I live in the Cleveland area and found out Assurant Health did not contract with the Cleveland Clinic."

"I changed plans in this company on 9/15/07 with a letter stating that my rated would not go up for 12 monthes. I have received a letter that on 6/15/08 my rates and deductible are both going up. Assurant refuses to honor the letter stating no increases for 12 months. I am furious!"

"In 1992 the cost of the policy was $235 with a 500 deductible. Today it's $975 with a $1000 deductible. Last year it went up almost $100. after raising the deductible from $500 to $1000. This year I was hit with $150. increase. makes it a little harder on the retired. Oh this also is with an exception from any bone spurs of the back. I'm 54."

"I and my wife have a $7500 ded. with preimun of $2500 per quater. I was informend if an emerency out of network would be covered without additonal co-pay or ded. I had to be treated for blood clots in my lungs out of net work and they come back with this is what we allow reas/cust. the policy says nothing about reas/cust but gives 6 ways they determine what is paid. They tell me it is to completacted to explain how payment was arrived at and which method they used out additonal $3000 out of pocket above $7500 ded and almost $10000 in preimun. And no one talks to you and gives an answer put it in writing and they will review"

"First of all the doctor's office reaction when we say "Assurant" is "What? They have lousy coverage. I have contacted the insurance commissioner for the state of CT."

"File a claim and insurance is denied....if you sign up for a 3 month "temporary" insurance, read the very small print....They continue to bill you after the 3 months and when you fax them (as required) to cancel your membership, they claim they never received fax and continue to bill you. They are criminals. "

"For blood pressure meds, I can only purchase a 30 day supply, which costs over $10 and goes toward my deductible (HSA plan with high deductible);at the sam time I can purchase a 90 day supply for the same price, but it doesn't go toward deductible. Had a pre-existing injury, no problem in accepting their rider clause. Injured the same foot, but different area, they applied the ER claim towards deductible, now 3 yrs later, had surgery (called & verified before), no problem. Surprise!!!!! They refused to pay for the surgeon (over $9000), but they paid the anesthesiologist & another one who DIDN'T (told Assurant & they said until they hear from them, they can't do anything about it) because of the pre-existing condition. Filed an appeal with the claim for the other injury attached-no way, now I'm at the grievance level. I'm also submitting the grievance level of appeal to my state department of insurance. Oh by the way, check the fine print for renewal period, just found out that mine is adjusted from every 9-18 months. This is the first claim I have submitted. Also verify your EOB's for being applied to your deductilbe-oops, the missed about 6 for this year. "

"Assurant (now Time) is pretty painless as insurance companies go. Customer service is no worse than any other insurance company (and I've tried many over the years) I am looking around but that is due to rate increases, not service/performance."

"This is the only honest company left that cares about the buyer. they don't outsource their claims like some other companies...come on India? unreal! Admitted Reasonable and Cutomary used to be a problem but they have fixed that and truly showed they cared about my opinion and business. they even reduced my renewal rate at my request!"

"No problems. Customer service was right on target and claims paying was effecient as a presentation of the benefit card. I look forward to the healthy discount upon renewal instead of the 25% increase I suffered with my prior carrier that made me so Blue and Cross!"

"Assurant Health is the most incompetent company I have ever dealt with in my life. They have customer service skills that are non existant. They have stolen from me and lied to me and placed work over the 4 months. I will never recomend them to anyone. Even if they were the only company to offer a water cooler in a desert that you would die if you couldn't drink from their cooler. I will make the promise that my lifetime goal will be to inform everybody that I can of their lack of any ability to do anything correctly. I hope and pray that no other living person ever has to rely on Assurant Health for anything, including whoever my worst enemy is. This has grossly been the worst experiance in my 36 year life. God Bless everyone and please for your integrety and sanity use anyone except Assurant Health for anything."
