"great rates, excellent agents, but the claims side of the company low balled every claim I have had and I havent had very many concidering how long I have been with them. They may pay better if it's a bigger claim, but they are not fair with the smaller claims."

"While my American Family agent and his staff have been excellent in handling all my insurance needs, including quistions and my agent's staff are just as helpful, their claims department is horrific to deal with. I recently had to notifiy AmFam that my husband had and accident (on 4/3) and as of May7 I am still trying to fully investigate and handle the claim in good faith. At present I have spoken with not only most of the American Family Claims Department's managers, supervisors, and regional managers, I have also have had to speak with the American Family Corporate Headquaters Claims Dispute/Complaint Department (all the way to the top of that department), and am now having to deal with their VP of General Operations of Claims. As of yet, there is no resolution in sight, only inconsistancies in their personnel's statements regarding the bad faith handling of claim, excuses/ambiguous answers, and each individual I speak with tells a different tale of how my claim was/is being handled. I have been with this company for more than 15 years and as a result of their Claims Department I have begun to seek out a new insurer."

"I've had occasion to reccomend American Family to many of my clients as I have a business relationship with my agent. He is great but their claims department is terrible to work with. I am still trying to get medical reimbursment on $1500 medical claim from january (its now may). In addition after having an accident at a friend home that was covered by AF my claim was turned down and I've had to sue to get my 26k out of pocket medical. This firm is not one I'd reccomend."

"I believe American Family is mishandling its approach to using credit bureau information to set premiums. We recently were notified that our premiums would go up due to our credit report findings. Further investigation showed that American Family used the wrong social security number when securing the credit report. This resulted in wasted time and effort on our part. We didn't bother to renew - we sought a new company and actually ended up paying only 60% of what we were paying with American Family. "

"I was hit by a driver with a small amount of isurance (25k). Her insurance company was Natiowide - I injuried my left wrist to the point where I need surgery because I'm now limited in my ability to use it and it's my dominate hand. Nationwide paid me the full $25k quickly and I then began to talk with American Family regarding my under insured coverage. I had racked up about $12k in medical bills already and the surgery is going to be another 15k+ after everything. Well after almost 8 months of "reviewing" my case they have determined that it was pre-exisiting and that they're not going to pay anything including my medical bills coverage. So I now have a lawyer (family friend) that can't believe that they didn't make any sort of offer. I've never had a claim and I'm changing insurance companies now because I also have about 2+ million dollars worth of insurance with them and if they don't pay claims why have it?"

"I have had insurance with American Family for almost twenty years. I am now paying premiums for five cars, two houses, a boat and a motorcycle. When my son came home from serving in the Army overseas, he found an excellent sales job that gave him a $500 monthly allowance for a vehicle, so he bought a nice car. Since he didn't have much credit history I had to co-sign his loan. This lowered my credit rating, which American Family used as an excuse to jack up the home owmers policy on my two homes $700. This is the reward you get for raising children who serve their country and come home and get a nice job. American should be removed from their name. Like most of the other respondents here I loved my agents. Most of them quit because they don't like corporate, but I have been with this agent about seven years and my only regret in leaving is I will miss my agent."

"Excellent agent..but the claims dept. is terrible to work with. Been with Amer. Fam. for 15+ years with a couple minor auto claims over the years. Now have had hail damage following major storm and Amer. Fam. adjuster wants to "patch the roof" !!! Entire neighborhood and adjoining homes in process of having new roofs installed....Very unknowledgable adjuster with a lot of "hot air" came out and then followed with a minimal offer to patch the roof. In process of working with State Att'y General on the matter...and will be checking out other companies."

"This is the first time that I've heard that we have to pay a separate premium for our trailer on our commercial policy. Do all insurances make you pay for a trailer? I thought a trailer would be considered an extension of your vehicle. Any comments, suggestions???"

"Love my agent, hate my ins. adjuster. Had severe water damage, policy covers me to replace at current pricing. Adjuster said they'd cover everything. Gave me a $12,000 check right away and told me to submit quotes for the rest of the work needed to be done, and more money would be "no problem". The total of repairs is about $27,000.00, which comes to $13,000 additional which I need because I can't start the project without it. The few times she answered my calls her response is always "Don't worry,additional money is no problem. I didn't know your damage was so extensive when I cut the check and did the estimates. We'll give you what you need. Go ahead and get started." My damage is such that I can't get started unless I know that the additional funds will be here. She hasn't returned calls or come up with any money and it's been a month since the initial check. She hasn't even come back to see the additional damage that was discovered. My floors were all pulled out, my walls are all cut into. I have asthma (which I told the adjuster) and the dust and dirt is making my asthma worse. I'm living in terrible conditions, most people would have gone to a hotel and stayed put until the repairs were finished. But not me. No, I wanted to be considerate of AM FAM. I didn't want to "take advantage" of them. "We're here for you. We'll take good care of you" they all say when they want to sign you up. But the real truth is in the results. Right now I'm very close to contacting the insurance commission in Washington state where I live. "American" Family is a bunch of crap. The very name is an insult to America."

"WE had 4 houses and 8 vehicles plus all of our toys covered by these people. When they originally signed us up I informed them that our garage was 3000 square feet, so the agent came out and took pictures as well as videotaped the entire garage. 5 years later, due to a electrical short our garage caught fire and American Family not only asked us "How could a fireman's house catch fire" but then went to all of our neighbors and asked if they thought I might have been mad at my husband, and did they think I deliberately lit the garage on fire? They finally paid, but they tried everything in the book to get out of it."

"Insure home, 2 autos, 2 motorcycles. In almost 20 yrs of combined insurance....2 small house claims...each under $300. One deer/auto less than $1500 and one auto comp claim for under $600....rates keep increasing, our driving records are excellent. What gives ? Agent is ok, but just wants to sell "more coverage". Why? Disappointing to be a good driver/insured w/no kids & our rates keep raising - obviously, very little in claims and yet consistent increases. Afraid to switch as we have had WORSE service. (Don't even mention Allstate). Is there any hope out there? Thought being a good responsible driver was supposed to have rewards. ????"

"Great company w/ nice people.. right up until you need them! My agent from them was fantastic, the claims guy on the phone was great too. Yet, I am changing company's after dealing with the claims adjusters. The guy was horribly unprofessional, down right rude, threatening and impatient. The company stalled paying for over 3 weeks. I almost sued them for bad faith until a manager stepped in and paid off the claim. I had to hire a lawyer before they paid. In the end, damage to my car cost $6000 and they paid $4000, I would ask for the rest of money, but it's just not worth fighting with them over $2000. Good Luck, Jason"

"We have had an exceptionally terrible experience with AMFAM. While on vacation in Texas, I struck a deer that ran into the road crippling my vehicle. This left me stranded in Texas. I tried to call roadside assistance, this was all automated and very unhelpful. I sat out in the 40 degree weather with my 2 young children, in the pitch black, hoping not to be stuck by oncoming traffic until the local police arrived. They were the only helpful people that we have met so far during this whole ordeal. I have tried to find out what is going on with my car multiple times, and I am ALWAYS transfered to someone's voicemail. One person told us that we were going to have to do "a little extra leg work" to get this taken care of. I am sick of leaving messages on voicemails and not being able to talk to a real human. I do not pay monthly to do "extra leg work." This is why I pay my insurace bill monthly. Every person we have spoke with tells us something different or that they can not answer our questions. We were first told that our car would be shipped back to Las Vegas to be fixed. Now we are informed that will not happen. We spent $900 on plane tickets to get home, to return to work , and now we are told that we have to somehow find a repair shop in TEXAS, when we live in LAS VEGAS, find the time off work and school and the money to fly back to Texas to pick up our car and drive ALL the way back to Las Vegas. I thought that the reason that I have insurance is so I don't have to go through all of this. And, I thought, that for sure, with the trusted name of American Family Insurace as my company, I would not have to worry about my vehicle since I have since December 31st. This experience has brought me to the conclusion that American Family Insurance is not "the most trusted and valued service-driven insurance company," as your mission states. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY!!"

"American Family has been great to me for the ten + years that I have been with them. Whenever there was going to be a significant change in my payments, they would call to let me know and I have never had a problem getting in touch with my agent. The monthly payments are very affordable and my agent explained every detail with me. He also made sure that I wasn't paying for things that I didn't need. American Family is NOT an insurance company that is just out for your money, they are there to make sure I am covered in case anything does happen. I have recommended them to all of my friends and family, and will continue to do so!"

"After an ice storm with both roof and contents damage, I am getting the run around from three different adjusters. Different things are being requested and no one has a standardized protocol. In fact, I'm being told they will depreciate my things until replaced when sending out a check. I don't have the resources to go out and replace all the things damaged or destroyed by a power surge and leak. Ugh!"

"I signed up with AmFam 15 years ago for an auto policy and recommended them to my parents for thier auto and home polices. Once my parents signed up with them I started to receive monthly premium invoices for their cars and they received mine, but not every month just every other month. We only share the same last name, we have different addresses, I a only one covered on my policy an my mom, dad and sister show on a totally different policy. I have no idea how they messed that up. I finally got so fustrated after they said they would correct it but never did and I cancelled my policy with them. My parents kept with them. 9 years ago my fiancee and I purchased a new home and decided to try it again with the same AmFam agent so we signed up both our cars and our home policies with her. All were signed up at same time but premiums were due on different days which was a pain, but price was best around. 2 years later I was going through rough financial times and circumstances arose where I deeded my home into my fathers name. So policy was amended showing my dad as insured but kept my fiancee as an additional insured and the policy was written as a rental instead of owner occupied being my father had his home covered with them already. The premium was increased due to the change of being a rental property. A year later I put a new mortgage on the home and deeded it back into my fiancee and my name and the balance of the years premium was paid at that time there was 2 or 3 months left to be paid for the years premium. So the policy was amended again back into our names and added mortgage company as mortgagee and was to show as owner occupied and no longer rental. With it no longer showing as a rental the premium should have been lower as it was before so I tried to contact them to see why it wasnt lowered. I tried calling and leaving messages, I sent faxes and sent emails and no one contacted me for two months at which at that time I found out that they did show the new mortgage company on the policy but they also were showing my fathers name as an additional insured, which he was not. They did show the mortgage company correct but they were showing the my mailing address as my parents my parents address, which the mortgage company did not like since the home was to be owner occupied and they did not like seeing my father as an additional insured which he was not and to top it off they sent the mortgage company the bill for the new premium, which was not to be paid by them either. Needless to say the mortgage company almost called my loan in full since all this information was not showing as it was supposed to be. I had to call the corporate office and complain about it and complain about agent not calling back about premium amount not changing. I wanted to know who was getting screwed? Me for paying an amount equal to a premium for a rental, but with less insurance coverage? Or my dad who paid for more coverage but didnt get it. The corporate office said agent would contact me with explination and have information corrected as it should be. Well I did receive the corrected information and sent it to the mortgage company but didnt receive a call from anyone with explaination. But soon after I did receive a letter from AmFam telling me my homeowners policy was cancelled. With all this mess going on and with the wrong mailing address showing and not corrected as requested two months earlier I never received an invoice for the new annual premium. I went into the office and went off. The agent reinstated the homeowners policy right then and there. BUT the next letter I get from AmFam is telling me my homeowners is increasing due to a credit report that was pulled when the NEW(?) homeowners policy was reissued as one is pulled all the time on new policies issuied. It was cancelled one day and reissued on the next and it was due to thier error. I am preferred client, or so I was told! I had muiti policy discounts and was an existing client for 9 years and there were no changes on policy and only 1 windshield claim and 1 towing claim have ever filed and it was one day to the next and they pulled my credit report and had to raise my premium because of their ignorance? I HATE MY AGENT! But I havent found a company that would beat the price. I did contact another agent to see if I could transfer my policy to him to be my agent, he was very very nice called back right away and said he would see if it was possible. He called back right away and left me a message stating it would be possilbe but he asked if I would call my agent first and let her know I would be requesting the transfer. He said I might want to see if she would have me give her another chance or even appologize to me and explain what happened or if I prefered he would do it for me. I called him back and left a message for him stating I'd rather not ever talk to her again if I didn't have to and said would appreciate if he would take care of it for me. I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN! I am still with the agent I hate but am contemplating on whether paying the quite significant amount difference is worth all of this or not. The premiums amounts for me have been quite lower and both the windshield claim and towing claim were issuied immediately the day after they were filed, but the customer serive by my agent is very much to be desired and that's not even writing about the automatic payments that were set up for the auto and home premiums or should I say the automatic payments that were NOT set up! I HATE MY AGENT!"

"They are using credit report information to determine your premium. I don't think that is ethical. People that are sick, layed off from their jobs, and otherwise screwed by corporate america, don't need to be bayonetted further due to hard luck. If an analysis were done on their methodology, I'm sure you will find that it unfairly punished poor and disabled folks while the rich pay the least. I think that premiums should be based on your personal habits (smoker, drinker) and driving record (if auto)."

"Please folks, heed the messenger: I was involved in a serious crash back in 2001, the then teenage driver was also insured with AMFAM, and I am here to tell you: AMFAM will only screw you and if possible never, and I mean "NEVER" pay you for your damages. "They are using a credit report as justification to increase my home owner's premiums even more than they usually do. Can't wait for my auto premium notice. Last year I had a dispute with a hospital over some medical charges. The hospital ended up sending the unpaid balance to a collection agency. After numberous discussions with the hospital billing department, they realized their error and adjusted the bill down to $60 which was immediately paid. American Family just sent me the notice of the increase because my credit worthiness is suspect. What a line of bull! The home owner's policy is paid from an escrow account - they will always get their money. I have been a homeowner for 34 years and have NEVER had a late payment, as document in all three credit reports. I have been with American family for over twenty-five years; currectly have two houses; three cars and an umbrella policy with them. I will not renew any of these policies!!!"

"I have had all my insurance with American Family for 13 years with no claims EVER and recently I had some major storm damage that included hail and high winds that ripped shingles off my roof and dented the siding. The claims adjuster came by today and told me that my claim was going to be a little over $600. It sure is funny that all my nighbors have had both the siding and roof replaced and mine has no $600 worth of damage."

"Just had a major storm blow though our area. Most homes in our neighborhood have severe siding and roof damage. Adjuster looked at my damage and made the comment that it's not as severe as most peoples and it looks like "old damage" from a previous storm so my claim will probably be denied. Also he stated that only so much money is allocated per storm so there's only so much to go around, sorry. After 15 years with this company I'm through!"

"We had bad ice daming this winter which caused roof and interior damage to several rooms in the house. Adjuster came out in December and cut a check for $2600.00, and told us if when spring came we discovered more damage then we simply needed to submit the estimates to get paid. When spring arrived I got estimates and they totaled over $20,000. I Faxed in the estimates and they sent out another adjuster and he came up with an additional $6,000. Why do we bother to get estimates if they simply ignore them. If American Family knows a contractor that will do the work for the money they have alocated then they should supply us with one. I don;t care who does the work so long as it is done right. 2 homes, numerous cars and motorcycles, and 14 years later and they just don't seem to care. I am going to go to the local news media if they do not get this issue resolved."

"If I had known then what I know now about this Insurance company I would NEVER have chosen to go with them. They are just a terrible company to deal with. My agent is very nice when he needs my money to buy more of their insurance products, but when I need to file a claim due to the recent sewer backups & flooding in my basement, I am ignored and brushed aside. Without even investigating and looking at the damages, I was told I would get nothing. This is just ridiculous how they treat their customers. "I live in Wisconsin and we have been hit with 10 inches of rain so far in the month of june 2008,needless to say my sump pump faile me,which resulted in my basement flooding with about 2 inches of water.it is 2 weeks since and they still haven't been able to come and survey the damage.they are a terrible company stay away from them,and my local agent is no help and very worthless he refered me to the 1-800 number what a joke."

"Would not recommend this Insurance company to anyone after experiences over past 5 years.Have been with this company for almost 15 years..filed one small claim about 10 years ago which didn't amount to much so there wasn't a problem. After that though they would continously come up with reasons and ways to either raise my deductible or my premiums..A year ago we experienced hail during a storm..every one of my neighbors were qualified for roof replacement by their insurance companies..I was denied by American family...at the same time they also were raising my homeowners premium because my credit rating wasn't quite as good as they said it could be?...I've had perfect credit rating for past 10 years with no complaints from anyone else?....Had same problems with Auto coverage...I had perfect driving record with no accidents or claims over 20 year period...last year I had accident not involving another vehile...they paid for the repair but immediately raised my insurance rates dramatically....I've had a number of vehicles insured with this company through the years and have had nothing but problems with them trying to either raise my deductibles or premiums every 6 months...having to constantly complain or renegotiate until they'd readjust rate to where it was previously...can't take it any more and will be changing companies soon...as a matter of fact I've already found a company that gives me more overall coverage on all my vehicles and saves me over $900.00 / year over American Family...smooth talkers..don't let them con you like they did me!!! "

"My local Agent was good to deal with, no problems with her office. American Family the corp. is what I am not happy with. I had two cars , a boat, a motorcycle and home owners policy with them for over 10 years. the first few years was ok, then they stated to raise my fees on all my policies, $20,$40 $80$100 and up and up. I had one claim with them on my son's car, hit a deer. they did cover that without to much trouble, but rates kept going up. I finally chaged to Erie Ins. Co. have alot better coverage and cheaper rates and lower deductables, when I canceled with American Family, I had found out that they did not have my new boat that I had bought over a year ago on thier records, they were still showing coverage for my old boat and were billing me montly out of my checking account for all my policies so I had not noticed that the did not switch the old boat to the new boat, thought they did casuse the monthly rate kept going up. Anyway I did not have any claims with them on the boat but when I canceled my Insurance the backed billed me for the difference in the amount of the boat policies, it was there mistake, but I said I would be fair and to tell me how much it was. when they sent me a bill for that, they also billed me for the motorcycle insurnace cause of a rate clause in their policy that say's that if I cancel it early then they can charge me a different montly rate then if I would have carried the policy the full year term. so they are charging me an addidtional amount for each month convered before I canceled, almost doubled. I know it sounds confusing and it is, but this how the treat their customers, they don't really care, it's all about pinching every penny out of you they can. "

"Met with our AMFAM agent who explained that we have excellent credit but because we live in AMFAM's "retirement territory," our multiple vehicle rates were now being increased by $22 a month. We have had no at-fault auto claims, etc., whatsoever with AMFAM, nor any homeowner policy claims. Our agent could not get a satisfactory, logical explanation from AMFAM corporate for this increase. We are dropping AMFAM, as we believe this is yet another for-profit, thinly veiled method of getting around their previous, now outlawed "red zoning" practices previously litigated against AMFAM in class action lawsuits. Insurance companies need to be under more aggressive federal and state watchdog commissions to address and stop these outrageous punitive practices that serve only the insurance companies' bottom line: profit at the expense of consumers. This is blatant discrimination based on an age group."

"Very inconsistent with claims handling. When we had a hail and wind damage claim our next door neighbor also had Am Fam and they fully replaced their roof. We had to patch ours and our siding. Not sure of why we could only patch and they got the complete new roof. Since then we are still having problems with losing shingles on our roof and it is obvious to see where the roof was patched. Also, had a problem with a claim when our vehicle was backed into by an American Family insured. They would not replace the rear panel of my husband's truck only patch it. The truck had less than 20,000 miles on it. Both of our claim experiences have been unsatisfactory. "

"I was hit from behind by another driver in heavy traffic. the other driver said I stopped suddenly and caused the accident. Well, of course I stopped. The cars in front of me were stopping, too. American Family would not pay the claim for the damage to my car. It took two months for them to decide. They are the worst insurance company I have ever been associated with. Never, ever waste your time with them."

"I have read the comments from other clients of American Family and My story reads the same. I have been a customer for over 30 years and never had to make a claim till this year when a tornado went through my neighborhod. They have sent out 2 adjustors and still refuse to pay the cost to have my roof fixed. I live in a townhome and our roofs all have to be fixed by the same contractor. I have spoke to my management company and several neighbors who have different insurance companies and they have all recieved their checks for repairs without any problem. My agent is of no help and I have spoke to several different people but all you get is a run around. I can only believe that the "people" who are making good comments about Amfam. are employees of the company who are being paid to post thses comments. What a Horrible company!!"

"I agree with what others have said about their agent with Am Fam. Ours is great to deal with but the company sucks. Last year when they went to credit checking on EVERYONE, including existing (and loyal)customers, our homeowners premium went from $374 to $570. They only looked at our credit score, not the amount (or lack there-of) of claims filed in the 15+ years we have been customers, and determined that because our credit is bad that we are more apt to file a lot of claims. Then we had ice dam damage in Dec. 2007 and had to file a claim. Well, guess what, our premium is now 856.00. Needless to say, I have now received quotes with another company that are what our premium used to be; $373. We are switching. It is too bad because we really like our agent and the fact that she is right in town and I even consider her a friend. What is the point of having insurance if filing a legitiment claim is only a strike against you. I don't know who came up with the saying "insurance is only as good as your agent". If that's the case, I can't afford my agent anymore."

"We had a fire and American Family was not helpful at all. Colluded with contractor and did nothing when the contractor failed to complete the job. They made unsubstantiated accusations and then dropped us. They like it when you pay your premiums and that is it."

"I have been with American Family since 2001, I have had multiple claims on auto and also rental vehicles and have never had an issue with the company paying. I have also relocated to another state and find that this agent handles everything like I have been with him as long as my past agent. Great company, competive rate, perfect customer satisfaction. What more could you want in an insurance co?"

"I forgot key in my car and have tow service open, I brought the claim to American Family Insurance, after that claim, they send me letter said that they will check my credit report to suite charge my policy, Im not satified with this, I pay monthly $450 for 3 cars that I have insured with American Family for years, after only one little claim for the key worth $49.00 , they want to check my credit and increase my premium, not recommend at all, I will start looking other insurance company now."

"Homeowners policy is restrictive when it comes to pets. I won't conduct business with a company that denies coverage based on the breed of dog you own. I don't think that an entire breed should be condemned based on what is most likely the fault of a few irresponsible dog owners. I'm off to find a pet friendly insurance company, even if it's on principle alone."

"I don't think everyone feels like they get everything that they desired or wanted out of an insurance claim. My Agent educated me on the things that American Family would not cover when I purchased the policy. When I understood a little more or what was covered and was not surprised when certain items were not covered. The Claim adjuster walked me through the claim process and made it easy and simple. "
