"This company has terrible coverage for what you pay. When I got new insurance it was impossible to drop them and I ended up paying for both. Plus longer than average hold times. Dont be taken hostage."

"Cancelled my heart doctor from our advantage plan in September without reason. That doctor saved my life fourteen years ago I have no intention of dealing with someone else. They claim in their commercials that you can go to any doctor who accepts Medicare patience. That is a lie Do not use this company and shame on AARP for endorsing them."

"We have insurance with this company through my husband's employer. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 had a mastectomy and reconstruction. Life was good we had Coventry and then Blue Cross before we had to go with UHC. There is a special place in hell for this insurance company My husband is having 160.00 taken out of each weekly paycheck for health insurance. We have a 5.000.00 deductible before ANYTHING is covered. No office visits prescription blood tests NOTHING TILL WE MEET 5000.00. So when I'm asked by a doctor if we have insurance I tell them technically we're paying for insurance but we'll never make the 5000.00 deductible so in effect no not really. I went for my annual mammogram and for the blood work my Oncologist wants every six months. Last year UHC covered the mammogram 100% so imagine my shock when I got bills from Advanced Radiology for the mammogram 268.00 I also got a bill from LabCorp for the blood work to see if there was a protein in my blood which would indicate cancer had returned somewhere in my body. Well after 3 months of phone calls to UHC every week twice a week I finally filled a grievance appeal stating these test should be covered 100% according to Women's Health care laws. After a week of so I recieved a letter from the head of appeals saying my claims were being denied I was told that mammogram testing and the blood tests were NOT covered in my account. If they are done for preventative routine testing they are 100% covered. But as I have breast cancer IT IS CONSIDERED A GENERAL ILLNESS As a cancer survivor this is like a slap in the face Breast Cancer is NOT a general illness. I consider a general illness to be the flu a sprained ankle or strep throat. 7 days before my mastectomy I was involved in a horrific auto accident. I can no longer work have short term memory loss can't walk without a can can't stand for any length of time and can' walk without having to stop and sit. My knees back and neck still hurt. My family physician wants me to have my knee scoped to see if that would help at all. I would LOVE to have this done but I don't have the 3000 it would cost The life I am living in constant pain is not what I consider living. I really wish I hadn't survived the accident or the cancer. "

"they are a joke at what we pay a month out of pocket to them and then our deductible its ridiculous and then they don't pay for correct treatment to get a person better then they turn around and deny coverage on bills. im sorry since when do we pay them and work for them to become rich? when you pay for insurance that insurance company is suppose to work for you to get you better not down and out try and kill you."

"My sister has stage 4 lung cancer with metastasized to the bone and they are denying coverage for the only pain meds that keep her out of pain. So is the plan of our government I guess we are gonna be just like Canada now and let people die."

"This review is for Sierra Life Health. A sub company under United Healthcare. They are very dishonest and misleading. I was sent to collections by the hospital after 4 phone calls to Sierra Health in which I was on hold for almost an hour each time. I was told twice during those calls that there was a mistake and the bill would be taken care of. 3 weeks later I got a notice from collections for that very bill. Then they told me they would reimburse me for the bill since at that point I had no choice but to take care of the bill. It has been over a year and I still have not been reimbursed. Then my wife had a baby. We are under auto pay. They were not taking the correct amount for the premium. So we again called and waited on hold for 45 minutes to tell them they were not taking enough money for our premium. They said they would fix it. The next month it still was not right so we called again and they said they would fix it. After recieving a bill in the mail for over 25000 from the hospital we called our insurance company and they said the policy was cancelled because the premium was not paid in full. We were givern no refund for the "partial payment" we already made and no notice that the policy was being cancelled. Horrible dishonesty going on over there"

"United Health Care will not approve the refill of Celebrex which I have taken for at least 10 years due to severe arthritis. The pharmacist told me that UHC requires that my doctor prescribe a generic. There is no generic equivalent of Celebrex. I am in considerable pain now due to the inability to get my Celebrex refilled. I get my insurance through my employer but if I had a choice I would choose another insurance company."

"We have had United Healthcare for over 5 years. It gets more expensive every year and they cover less. Blood work and X-rays were at one time covered if ordered from your doctor its now applied toward our huge deductible. All of our employees have had the same problems. We paid over 16000.00 a month for insurance for our company of 24 employees and all we got was denial letters and letters that state that the charges were applied to our deductible. We have since changed insurance companies and they are paying like they should and it is costing us less per month. DO NOT WASTE your money on United Healthcare. Look at their profits last year alone over 100 BILLION dollars for 2013. They are making so much money because they are not paying their customers insurance claims"

"as far as I can tell it covers nothing. Pharmacies always seem shocked that my insurance doesnt cover things and cant find any alternatives it does cover. The doctors office seemed shocked at my huge copay even though it was an accepted insurance."

"My policy states that mental health claims are covered 80% in network and 60% out of network after deductibles. However every claim that has been submitted has been denied because UHC does not feel my son needs services. All qualified mental health professionals working with him and assessing him disagree. UHC is not assessing my son-- they simply don't want to pay. When you complain they say send to appeals which I believe is the wastebasket sitting in their office. "

"They will insinuate that you are a hypochondriac tell you that you don't need to know the intricacies of your health care refuse to pay doctors or reimburse you if you pay them instead but most of all they will give you conflicting information every single time you call them. Record all conversations you have with them keep all letters they send you file everything away or else you will have nothing to challenge them with when they deny you coverage."

"When my company changed over to United health care my long term personal doctor said they could not accept United Health Carebecause of a pattern of billing problems they would not process claims in time. I have had nothing but problems with United health Care. We are lobbying our company to dump United health Care and find a quality health care provider."

"My three year old child was admitted to the hospital directly from his primary doctors office for severe dehydration due to excessive diarraha that had been going on over a week. He was lethargic could no longer walk he was so severely I'll from dehydration and United HealthCare is denying his inpatient hospital admission for severe dehydration as not medically necessary. Apparently we should have gone against the orders of his primary care doctor and the hospital doctors and brought him home to die. I am just sickened by this company and currently going through their bogus appeals process now. We are talking a three year old child here. It's just insane"

"I have been trying to get a flu shot paid for by this insurance company for 7 months. The claims have been file 6 times in that period because they keep making mistakes and cannot correspond in a timely manner. I have never worked so hard for a 65. claim nor have I ever had to put so much time and effort into any insurance claim in my life. I have been emplooed for almost 50 years and never has a comany I've worked for been so little help and so much trouble. "

"Must follow up with all claim submissions. What they show on your on-line account does not always match up with their records. They take forever to process a claim that requires a payment. They also "lose" claims and you need to re-submit again and again even though the claims show on-line. Don't bother calling customer service-absolutely useless. Finding that more and more physicians are dropping participation with UHC due to non-payments."

"No doctors on their "list" were accepting new patients. After a few weeks found a doctor that did take new patients. Doctor accepted insurance and in contracted with United Healthcare. Got statement online that all of the bill went to out of network deductible no discount full amount. Told at customer service that you need to check all the time due to the fact that list is always changing. Ridiculous. I would have better luck with no ins. than this one. Don't cover anything until you hit 3000 deductible anyway. Can't afford to see a dr can't afford not to."

"I am very frustrated with United healthcare for health coverage claims? They keep rejecting claims thinking I have other coverage. I have repeatedly called the to tell them that they are my only coverage and they say they are taking care of it but they don't..mother also claim to have no recorded of my previous calls. I am so frustrated. they keep saying they will take care of correcting my records but they haven't done it."

"reps call you and will tell you that xyz care is not covered. They will not send that statement in writing they will not tell you their complete - first and last name. They will tell you a baldfaced lie about similar care or procedures they had. They claim to be registered nurses but I'm beginning to doubt it. "

"Stay away from United Health Care. This is the worst health insurance company I have ever had.The customer care is terrible. They continue to drop services that batted you to begin with and continuously raise your deductible.In one years time they only contact you when they are trying to trick you into paying for more services you don't need. Report them to the Better Business Bureau if you have reason.This way you possibly will save someone from being taken advantage of again. "

"My new policy requires me to pay a 3 k deductible up front before they pay a cent on anything including prescriptions. Since Jan 1 I have paid over 3 k for surgery. Now I can get a prescription filled bc they will take over 30 days to update that I have met my deductible. The prescription is 300. They are suppose to pay 100% after I meet my deductible. They won't cover genetic at all. I am recovering from surgery and about to be forced into withdrawal on a drug that is not to be stopped cold turkey. I simply cannot afford 300 10 days after paying 3k for surgery. I will be complaining to every agency including state regulation. "

"Everyone's negative comments are spot on about United. I'm actually a customer service rep currently working there and I feel for the members that call in. We have absolutely no direction and are actually encouraged to discourage long member phone calls It's absolutely deplorable I regret taking a job here. Your claims will be denied arbitrarily and we customer service reps are forced just to transfer a member with legitimate concerns and questions to another department It's pure chaos. I urge any member currently covered by these idiots to call back SEVERAL times to determine what your correct benefits are but our systems are so confusing and actually worded/written to be arbitrary and we you asked for clarification we're told to tell you "sorry I"m not medically trained so I can't answer that." I'm looking for employment elsewhere as hard as I can. This place is spirit destroying on both sides of the fence. I really do feel for members and wish there were more I could do to actually help but can't since we are discouraged to and it's all about numbers and metrics you have to meet. I urge members to try and seek coverage elsewhere like with BCBS. I've heard nothing but complaints from members switching from BCBC and the horror stories about OptumRX which is total joke I'm almost at the point where I'd rather be broke and unemployed to be working for this idiots. "

"United Health Care gets it. Very hip to appropriate care for Type I diabetics. No fussing over providing support. A bit high on specialist co-pay though...Type I folks have to see their endocrinologists 2 to 4 times a other provider will touch me with out coordinating with my endocrinologist. He is the center of my health care. United could do more to assist with cost of using specialists as a matter of life. "

"United Healthcare is TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. How is a person supposed to get well while fighting with this insurance company to pay bills? Customer Service sucks and they transfer you umpteen times and you still get the wrong person. Then when you do get someone who says they will help they don't follow-up. My husband was involved in a hit/skip and then the guy knocked my husband to the ground and ran over him with his car. After two months we still don't have resolution and UHC has denied the largest of our medical bills which were the emergency room charges. What a joke. Don't get this insurance."

"UHC disregards doctor recomendations and they deem what you as a patient needs. Then they bill you because the item was not doctor recomended. If you do get what your doctor wants for you then UHC will not pay for it and the bill goes to collection."

"Delay tactics were ridiculous here. I had to sign a pre existing letter for a surgery on 4/13/2012 and fax back in order to get the ball rolling. I did this 5 times before they claimed they received it and said I was good to go. After getting harrassed by collectors I followed up and was told they never did receive my form. Fax again. I was assured all was needed to process claim. Weeks later still getting collection calls. Another follow up and after further review oops they put the wrong dates on the form so this was no longer valid. No one bothered to let me know this of course. So I fax it in again. Finally my claims were paid after nearly a year after my surgery. But wait6 months later I get served at my place of employment by my Anesthesiologist suing me for 800 after never even receiving a bill or a phone call. I called United and after the usual 30 min hold on the phone they could not explain why they did not pay this claim but would process it immediately. They refused to provide me anything in writing to show me the claim is in process. JOKE"

"Their Optum RX division is the most horrible pharmacy we have EVER dealt with. What they put me and my wife through this last month is something out of a Twilight Zone and Catch 22. Once you think you've cleared the hurdles another gets put up then another. Also their medication co-pays are out of this world. We paid a 15 co-pay for a 20 prescription. Our co-pays and cost of medication previously were a fraction of what the are now.The other issue is that whenever you call them you never speak to the same person or anyone that has the power to make a decision it's as if they all have the script they have to follow. Our group is now exploring whether we can drop UHC and look into another company.Stay away from UHC as far away as you can."

"My 20 y/o son was diagnosed with Bulimia and has been doing it for over 3 years undetected by us. United Helath Care does not think it is a serious enough issue to warrant a 5-day a week 6 hour program. They suggest that he should see a doctor 1-2 a week an hour each visit. It has been appealed 3 times and it keeps getting upheld by UHC of course there is no outside appeals board. United Helath Care has refused to pay any of the 395.00 a day rate which will have to be paid by me and of course i will pay it. I was one of the Officers of my company that help choose this new insurance company last year after they sold me a load of BS. DO NOT USE/PURCHASE UNITED HEALTH CARE FOR YOURSELF OR EMPLOYEES..."

"Three words for dealing with United - APPEAL APPEAL APPEAL. I had to appeal a claim TWICE to get the coverage I was entitled to. And it was an OFFICE VISIT Buy a big book of stamps and make up an appeal letter template on your computer and you are set to go with United"

"How many of us really have a choice about healthcare? I take what my job provides they have done the best they can. I had been getting my kids ADHD meds - GENERIC - for 10 for over 5 years. United switches to Optum RX suddenly the same generic is 50. United's claim is that it ALWAYS SHOULD HAVE BEEN 50. SO I go from 66 cents a day to 3.33 for 2 kids. Yeah for a generic. Luckily we have been in good health with regard to surgeries etc. because I hear about 'denial of claims' a lot. Sadly complain politics all you want - the insurance companies will make their . I doubt their are any good ones."

"UHC avoids paying claims at all cost. They categorize almost every procedure as 'surgery' regardless if a scalpel is needed. Routine examinations are coded as 'surgery' which goes beyond the normal co-pay.This is without a doubt the worst insurance company."

"Our coverage with United Healthcare is through my husband's employer the State of Texas. I can't believe what we've gone through trying to get them to pay our claims for doctor visits. Multiple phone calls during which we are assured that they will "fix things" but no one ever does. So you're forced to pay the doctors' bills yourself just so you can continue to have medical care.I've had to deal with a number of insurance companies over the coursenof our lives and United is absolutely the worst."

"Did not advertise how incredibly high they raised copays and deductibles in second year. Locked into their pharmacy which refuses to release drug that keeps me walking until I meet not only my deductibles but my family plan deductible. "I have Type 1 Diabetes for 41 years. This medical insurance repeatedly gives me names of Durable Medicine Companies and they either ask me to pay 3 times more a month for insulin pump supplies and CGM sensors. And I give my life history to these companies to find 3-7 days later they no longer accept UNITED HEALTH CARE and or keep asking to fax more information daily."

"They own their own personal mail order pharmacy which may give you lower co-pays but also bugs you with unwanted phone call. OptumRx also hi-jacks local prescriptions and loses records. At the very least as long as you are willing to pay higher co-pays you are "allowed" to use local pharmacies. United Healthcare pushes their mail order pharmacy and has a problem with solving simple billing problems."

"United Healthcare is much worse than Cigna. My company switched for to save them money but its doubling the cost for RX out of my pocket. Most non-generic drugs are on the Tier 3 pricing level where Cigna had them at Tier 2. UHC is such a scam. They even hide the listings of claims on their website to prevent you from easily seeing what you've paid. You have to click on each individual claim to see calculate the total. "

"If you have this company make sure you have all doctors needed including all lab test ect. before procedures to make sure they are in network. Good luck on finding information from their call center and web page. They change monthly or anytime they want.This is one unethical company the Government needs to investigate. "

"I went to my primary care physician for a physical and preventative blood work. They won't pay the cost of the blood work. They said due to the medical reform act the "codes" have changed and your doctor did not use the correct codes. They won't tell you what codes they should use. UHC is a very unethical company and they don't stand behind what they claim. "

"I use a primary care doctor outside of their plan. It seems every time the doctor prescribes medications they disapprove them. The amount of paperwork they require from the doctor is unreasonable. If I had the option I would select another health care company but this is the only one my company provides. For my next employer their coverage plan will influence my decision to go with the company.. "

"Horrible customer service even on routine things like prescription refills. You go around in circles talking to their customer service the pharmacist and your doctor. I had no problems with my prior insurance company. You might be better off getting an individual healthcare plan from another company rather than using an employer-provided UHC plan and supposedly we have the best plan that UHC offers. "

"Plan year runs from July 1 to June 30. I reached out of pocket maximum of 2000 on August 9th this year due to cancer. On December 6th my account suddenly went from having reached the out of pocket maximum to being 1000 shy of the out of pocket maximum. Customer service agreed I had reached out of pocket max on August 9th but they could not fix it in their system. Now I have doctor bills arriving when there should be none and a healthcare company that agrees with me but is unable to fix their mistakes. Very stressful to have to deal with when trying to beat cancer."

"Claims take for-ever with follow up phone calls to several people to get them to understand why the claim was processed incorrectly. Customer Service is very un-informed. Different answers when asked the same questions five days in a row. Worst insurance I have ever been forced to accept."

"They have started a new policy that has made me very unhappy. My Dr. ofc was bought out by a group of Dr. So now if I want to see a specialist I can only see one in their little group. And I mean little. So all other Dr. I was see are not in there little group of Dr.And it seems that this is the new trend. So I have no choice at all about who I see as a specialist. "

"The company finds ways not to pay. I had filed a claim and United Health Care sent the check to the doctor in his name. I followed proper procedures for this. This was on called for. Then when I called to follow up on it no one knew what was going on and I was being transferred to other departments. I had to call the corporate office then they transferred me to consumer affairs. Then they me what was going on. This is bad business ethics. Seems like their employees are not trained to do the job. Nothings seems to be done right in this company. Unbelievable. "

"This insurance company will approve a surgery and then after the surgery they will deny the claims submitted after previously approving it. They make it almost impossible to file a dispute and when you do it gets 100% ignored and never responded to. They try to use "paperless statements" that THEY require and then try to hide what they decide that they will not cover for whatever bogus reason they come up with. On a scale of 1 to 100 they rate in the negative."

"You need to take a copy of your benefits with you to the doctor and if the doctor orders a test you need to show him where it is listed so he will code it correctly. If it is not coded correctly you are liable for the cost. You will find out several months later when you receive a bill. Getting copies of your medical record is costly time-consuming and ultimately pointless if you appeal."

"nothing is covered under united healthcare insurance. most facilities and doctors will not see you. You cant get any prescriptions filled without paying entire deductible first. I am extremely dissatisfied with this company and it is sort of non negotiable at your employer in selecting it. Human resources states sign up for it or they will automatically sign you themselves."

"Deny services stating that services are not covered by Medicare. When they are contacted they say they the wrong codes have been used but cannot tell you what the correct codes are and told me to contact the hospital and find out what codes they used. This all stinks of a delaying ploy..."

"As soon as I satisfied my annual deductible HD-HSA plan United Healthcare started "incorrectly processing" 100% of my claims always resulting in them not paying any of the claim. Each claim took numerous long calls to Customer Service before they finally admitted to "mishandling" the claim and paid it in full. What a nightmare Never again will I seek insurance with this company."

"My husband has the high deductible insurance plus high premium from his small company that he works for. It has paid claims Ok so far but now that he had surgery for cancer plus all the related labs etc we got an EOB that states our insurance was canceled So thanks to your comments we will probably add the bills to our pending bankruptcy since to do otherwise will be financial suicide. We will attempt to get the claims paid but everything will go in writing with signature required and cc our attorney. If we have the problems I foresee then I will also alert the BBB and attorney general. Good luck to everyone with this problem. "

"Company pads their pockets by denying reasonable treatments and claims. My son ended up in the ER and admitted to the Hospital due to an approved substitute asthma medication that in fact was not in any way shape or form the same as the medication that was originally prescribed by his doctor. After being in the hospital we are now paying the highest tiered copay for the medication that should be covered at a reasonable cost. We are also having to declare bankruptcy to cover the deductible and co-insurance charges from our sons hospital stay. Took 2 weeks and multiple phone calls from my specialist to get them to approve an MRI on my foot that I have been suffering with for 3 months. The most annoying part of all is that they dont even have to pay a single penny of the MRI which they continue to deny because I still have to meet the deductible. My husband is in the process of finding a new employer and the first question asked will be what insurance they provide. We never want to be stuck with UHC again. Worst company ever"

"Routine lab work is covered in my contract sometimes it is sometimes not. When I call and ask why my labs were denied they will check on it and get back to you. They never get back to you. You have to call again to get someone else to check on it. By check on it they mean they will stall until the 180 day period for filing a grievance has passed and then say there is nothing they can do about it I should have filed a grievance. They have destroyed my excellent credit and I paid over 700 a month for them to do it Its outright theft Its the only ins my employer offers but it is worse than no insurance. Switch jobs before you take this insurance."

"Customer service is 50/50. You might get a jerk 1 time and then a pleasant person the next. I called United 3 times in 2 weeks requesting my ID cards be sent. Its been over a month and no card. I was told it should take 7-10 business days. Well its more like 25 days. I verified my address with them and still no card. I cant blame the postman because I receive everything else promptly. What can I say... Im just annoyed. If this is how things are starting off with them who knows what ride Im in for when I actually go to see a doctor. God forbid they charge me an arm and a leg"

"In my experience doctors on the plan change frequently so you often have to change doctors. Also, they are not good about covering prescriptions. Even after my doctor wrote a letter of appeal explaining why I needed a medication they still refused to cover it. "

"They constantly lie about the processing on claims. They blame Ceridian for not informing them of updates, and also they blame their own databases for not updating. I have spent over 20 hours in the past few months simply trying to get my COBRA account updated correctly in their “databases”. They take no responsibility for correcting their own incompetence, simply advising me to sort things out with my former employer or Ceridian. Or they lie and say they will resolve things that they never do. Their “rapid resolution” department is a joke. different explanation every time I call them. Their case numbers don’t match or are inaccessible. They advise that they will call me back yet never do. "Significant bruising and swelling appeared on my leg out of nowhere. 3 doctors agreed that an ultrasound was necessary because they felt I had a blood clot. When they did not find a blood clot they thought I might have an infection as a result of an insect bite and had to do numerous tests. Unitedhealthcare, 3 months after the fact, sent me a bill for nearly $2,000.00, denying my claims, and stating that the nature of the tests run indicated that I had been in an accident and that a 3rd party was responsible for covering the tests run. In the two years I was in school and had healthcare coverage under them, through my school- not by choice, I had to verify 4 times that I did not have any other insurance coverage. With every claim there was a counter-action to weasel out of having to pay what they were contractually bound to pay. There is no worse insurance company in the world- trust me!"

"I feel like every time I go to the Dr I get several bills and United Health care only pays a small fraction of the bill. For example I received a bill for $185 UHC only paid $51. Have been going back and forth with the billing company for the doctors and United Healthcare for over 6 months now trying to get the billing issue resolved. "I have had UHC through a large professional firm for 10 years. We have had a major cost $85,000, for a broken back. UHC paid all with no questions. Medical for car accident, paid no issues. Have had bad history with another health insurance provider when son had cancer treatments, but none w UHC, and now that he is too old to be covered he is uninsurable. "A person gets what they pay for with this insurance. They are paying only a fraction of my 5,000.00 surgery,(prior tothe surgery date they said it was covered). Their new reasoning for such a low payment is that it is under their cheaper plan. Also, if you call customer service, you can get a different answer every time. "Many services are denied that should be covered per my policy guidelines. I must call UHC anywhere from 8 to 10 times and am told the charges will be paid, but then I receive a letter stating the original determination was correct. I call UHC again and am told that letter was sent in error, my inquiry was closed in error and they will send back for review. "I was offered this health insurance through my employer ( who I found out does not pay a penny towards my insurance) it started at 28.56 a week for a single plan, changed in January without notice to 40.67 a week. When I had to use the insurance I found out it covers nothing, and have refused 99.9% of the claims recently filed and have not even notified me the hospitals and doctors have with submitting the bills to me saying that they have been rejected. I cancelled the insurance right away (since they do not cover anything) and customer service is another subject, and still took me for two additional deductions from my paycheck. I feel as though this company should be investigated for misleading customers for services they they do not pay for. And we all wonder whats wrong with health insurance?? HMM. "

"My mother had a Medicare supplement policy with AARP/United Healthcare for almost 20 years. I was her representative, acknowledged by United Healthcare. Because I could not locate her policy; I requested a copy of her policy to see what plan she had and its coverages, on multiple occasions. I never received the policy copy. "I've spent over 5 months trying to get a Ceritificate of Creditable Coverage from UH so I can get coverage for existing conditions on my new insurance. Originally I was sent the certificates, but they were filled out incorrectly with the wrong coverage dates. Since then I've requested them continously over the last 4 months, was promised that corrected copies would be sent and haven't received them. Latest request was made on 4/10/09. In addition, I have asked to speak to supervision and was promised they would call back on 4/21/09 and 4/27/09 (within an hour). No call was returned. This company actions indicate to me that they are disorganized, poorly manage, and not customer focused. If you have a choice in healthcare insurance, stay away from this organization!"

"They find a "reason" to deny, or pay very minimally, almost all claims that are not a general Dr. visit for a "flu" or an annual physical. I need a child psychologist, and there are none on the network in 10 miles, and 3 in 20 miles. I was told by 2 different receptionists that they are "the worst" insurance company to deal with. One told me "you have my sympathy". For the thousands we pay annually for a family plan, our benefit amounts to a few hundred dollars per year. "I deal with this insurance company on a daily basis as an office manager for a provider. They are the worst insurance carrier that we are contracted with by a mile. About 75% of perfectly good claims being rejected and other insurance issues come from UHC. Recently, they have institued a provider satisfaction survey when calling the provider call center. If you choose "yes" to answering a survey that takes place after you speak to a rep, they transfer you to the USA call center (and trained employees that provide much improved customer . However, if you choose "no" to partaking in the survey, you are routed to one of their overseas call centers (India, the Phillipines). "When I bought my policy, they told me it would cover preventative procedures. I had to have a breast sonogram done because my mammogram was difficult to read due to dense tissue. "My company switched to this insurance company. In one month they have denied two claims. One for mental health and one for preventative chiro services. My partner needs to go to a mental health provided that is 20+ miles away or in another state. United does not cover preventative care. I do not recommend this company. "they urged me to have a procedure without getting written approval that it was covered. over and over again they gave me verbal confirmation, but not written. i finally had to schedule the surgery. they knew i had the date scheduled, and delayed the approval until afterwards. i had to cancel the surgery ($50,000 procedure) the day before. ridiculous!"

"This Insurance is the most poorly paid insurance to Medical providers barely above Medicaid. If there are any providers which are looking at participating with this insurance look at the fee schedule first and do a comparison on other carriers and what they pay~ specifically Anthem (BCBS)"

"Our Pediatrician opened a new facility. The new office was listed as "In-Network" on the United website. All claims at the new facility were denied for the first two months, which just happened to coincide with our newborn. The Doctor was nice enough to drop his charges ( over $1000 ) and only charged us for the actual immunization materials ( over $600 ) that we had to pay out of pocket. My prescription costs went from $14 per month on my previous plan to $42 per month on United, and to top it all off, I'm paying 3x as much as I was at my previous company for much better insurance. I've seriously looked at changing jobs simply because of the horrible insurance."

"Have had myself and my son covered for a year now. Nothing major - mostly just routine doctor visits and an occasional chest x-ray and prescription for my son. I love our pediatrician in the network and have no complaints."

"Handled doctor, lab and pharmacy bills correctly. Had procedure in out patient surgery center and United did not pay for 2 months. United informed surgery center that they had not submitted all necessary info on paper work. Surgery center said United uses that excuse to slow pay or not pay. Surgery center said United was hoping customer would pay the fee themselves and United was the worst company for paying their bills that surgery center dealt with. "

"United is a good insurance provider. You won't hear any nonsensical ramblings from me. I have used United Health for 3 years and have had no problem with them. It's a PPO so I expect to pay higher premiums. On the same token, my medical expenses are taken care of better than they would be if I used an HMO or a HRA/HSA plan. I think for people who are not concerned about their health, do not foresee themselves going to the hospital for any type of hospitalization or surgical care then, go for another plan. I chose the PPO plan with United because I did not want to be caught short in the case that I would need hospitalization. In fact, both my wife and I were hospitalized last summer and my out of pocket cost was much better than it would have been with other plans. So that's #1 in importance to me. #2 in importance...and something often not considered or known, is the amiability of my insurance company and their willingness to pay my healthcare needs without too much of a hassle. In fact, I underwent extensive testing...some of which was for peace of mind only. In fact, not only did United pay all my bills without hassle or question, but they did so promptly. Something I could not get with either Kaiser or Blue Cross/blue shield. Overall, I am satisfied."

"UHC's way of resolving issues with the customer is by making them write an appeals letter instead of resolving the issue up front. This appeals letter takes 30 days for review and hopefully you are not turned over to a collection agency in the meantime for unpaid balances while waiting for UHC to pay. Important paper work is constantly lost or not sent by UHC. Deductibles are not correctly credited to account. "

"In six months UHC has paid out about $30,000 on me (and continues to pay for Chronic Kidney Failure care as well) without any hassle. The only issue I've had has been small problems getting certain prescriptions authorized. Just so folks know, your level of insurance is determined by your employer or group when coverage is negotiated, not the insurance companies. If your deductible, co-pays, and premiums are too high it probably indicates a lower tier. I found this out as my sister has UHC too, but it's like totally different insurance! Her deductibles and copays are outrageous! If your insurance is provided by your employer talk to HR about exact coverages. It could be helpful when trying to navigate treatment."

"My son was hospitalized for 4 1/2 months. By the time the hospital sent out bills the claim filing period had lapsed. Hospital filed on wrong account. United refused to work with us AT ALL and would not accept claims. We paid his thousands of $$ in bills (he had just turned 21 & his illness made him incompetent) but United ruined his credit. Your worst nightmare gone worse."

"Customer service reps are very very rude and unknowledgable. They do absolutely nothing for you except say they will look into your problem, give them two weeks, call back and see what the end result is. After 8 weeks, I am still hearing the same story, so no one has actually looked into anything yet. The best one I have heard to date is that my doctor may not actually be in my plan (really, I got his name from their website) and to verify this info. I have to them get the doctor's tax ID number and call UHC back to verify. WHAT?????"

"United Healthcare goes out of their way to find reasons to deny claims. They bought the Federal MD-IPA insurance from Mamsi effective 1/1/08. When a claim is submitted to them from doctors for on-going treatment of Mamsi patients, United Healthcare denies the claim. When patient calls to ask about the denial, they use the excuse of not having any medical history for the patient, gives the patient an 800 number to call to get their medical history. Instead of going back to the doctor to request whatever history they need, they deny the claim which causes the doctors to bill the patient for the service. If they truly were interested in paying the claim, they would request the history needed for the claim and pay it. They are betting on patients not following up on denied claims. I've experienced this for the entire 6 months that I've used United Healthcare. They were not my choice of a provider and will definitely not be my choice when open season comes around in November. Customer Service employees are NOT helpful. I spoke to 3 of them today and indicated that I wanted to stay on the line to take their customer satisfaction survey. Got a dialtone after each call. So much for soliciting feedback."

"According to the UHS website I found conflicting information regarding whether or not my surgery was going to be covered so I called...or at least tried. After spending 3 hours on the phone just to find out if my MD was "in-network" and after speaking with 5 different customer service reps I still didn't have an answer. The reps are NOT trained well, were rude, and in the end I was beyond frustrated. I can't wait till I actually have a bill that I need to deal with??? Why must it be so difficult to speak with a knowledgeable human being??"

"My physician of 15 years prior to my being forced into UHC healthcare was not accepted into their PPO network because UHC told him that if he wanted to be in the UHC PPO network he would have to (read : BE FORCED TO)accept UHC HMO patients. He refused to be strongarmed in that manner. The UHC PPO physician I moved to as a result dispised UHC, and treated me accordingly. If he hates my insurer, and hate is an understatement, then it stands to reason why I got treated like I did. Actually this physician had devised a plan to push procedures on UHC patients before they had reached thier deductable, and when I refused these "patient pays the full amount" procedures I was asked to leave. The "forced" HMO patients pushed on any physician applying to join the UHC PPO network is remenicient of the mafia run waste removal/disposal business. Companies and States that choose this insurer do NOT do so because of their quality, they do so because of their cost, and that UHC cost savings comes out of the hides of their/your physicians, and subsequently you their patients. This insurer has raised the game of forcing us all into HMOs to an art form."

However, when I go to use the insurance, they give me nothing but grief. Last visit, I ended up paying for everything out of pocket. What's the use? "Are they even a real insurance company? Or are they just a gatekeeper for whatever company who hires them to pay out for their employees' health care? It is the latter, I believe. Just a mild conflict of interest...Otherwise, the co-pays are too high and the coverage is scant. If you pay them, you are really paying your ownemployer. "Claims have been randomly denied, without cause. Claims have been resubmitted repeatedly by providers and are sent back and forth between Behavioral Health and Medical and appear lost. Trying to get assistance (or an answer regarding lost claims) is a nightmare that takes hours of transfer after transfer and the same questions asked repeatedly."

Repeated, systematic denial of mental health claims that are clearly covered by my policy with no real explanation of why, assured each time it is going to be taken care of just to find out a month later it is denied again for some reason that makes no sense. "The company was great until I had to file a claim. My company pays for acupuncture coverage at 90% in network 70% out of network. Unfortunately Unite offered no in network providers within 60 miles of my city (population 30K people--20 miles from Seattle) So when it came time to file my out of network claim United responded by dragging out the claim. First requesting the location of service (clearly submitted on the receipt), then when I got a Health advocate involved United told him they needed the level of service--not location. He provided the info and United promised a new EOB in 15 days. None came. when I called the claim was still in process now awaiting the TIN--which I had not been notified of. I submitted 3 other virtually identical claims with the only variance being the dates of service and I received 3 additional letters stating they needed more information to process the claim. And all three requested completely different information to process, this time including the TIN on two. One correspondence actually requested the CPT, but the letter they sent actually had the CPT code right on it! When I called in to ask about the discrepancy in the requests I got no response other than our provider needed to send in a W-9 (THEY WOULDN'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THE QUESTION)--which the provider has sent them a W-9 and has other patients with United receiving reimbursement just fine. United is fine until the patient has to file a claim."

"Prior Authorization for meds, I can understand....sort of. An appeal from my doctor for freakin' Nexium is terrible. I need 40mg of Nexium or equivilant a day. I've settled for Prilosec prescription until the Nexium gets approved. Guess what? They don't want to cover 40mg of anything! In fact, they don't want to even do it with a generic! Furthermore, my copay is more expensive than buying it over the counter! United Healthcare would rather see me dead than healthy. Being a teacher sucks. "

"This company takes worthless to a whole new level. I actually had to quit a job I liked a lot and put the company in a bad position because I could no longer afford to work there. I was having to pay for my wifes treatments out of pocket because United Healthcare said they were 'experimental'. Before getting on their policy She had the procedure for 5 years under Anthem and Aetna neither company blinked once. United fought me tooth and nail as I had to fax and email all kinds of data to them and try to get the Doctor to justify the treatment. My major problem is that without the treatment my wife is literally disabled and in pain. Its a standard outpatient procedure.. Whats better is United Paid for the drug, just not injecting it! So I asked for a refund of my premiums as they had denied all 3 claims that year. That went nowhere. I spoke with the HR person at the job and they tried to beg and plead with them to cover the treatment. UH refused and after explaining that with the high premiums and 600+ doctor costs I wasnt really able to justify working for them anymore and quit. Funny isnt it? Im on ANTHEM and the procedure is covered in full no muss no fuss. How could that be?"
