Consumer Complaint:

Insurance agent told me something different and insurance is too high. I am saying as soon as my down payment was received the premium changed. The premium was based on my safe home Florida Inspection. My insurance has been cancelled.

I don't understand exactly what happened -- each company has made a rate filing and generally charges a fixed rate for the same coverage regardless of the agent you use. They don't have "let's make a deal" rates.

Write a letter to the agent complaining about what you think was wrong, with a copy to the head of his agency and a copy to Citizen's Insurance Company's CEO, and ask them to reply. Then send a copy of the letter you sent out and their replies - or lack of replies -- to the Florida Insurance Department. If Hurricane Gustav bears right, parts of Florida are wet toast. About to be Hurricane Hanna is also bearing down on Florida. You did not say what, if anything the agent told you that was not true. Simply that the price he quoted was too high? If you ask me most prices are too high, from insurance to gas to food. It's almost impossible to get homeowners coverage in most parts of Florida except through Citizens, a state-sponsored insurer of last resort. It sets the rates, and limits the coverage, and that's it. There's no real free market. If Gustav or Hanna hits, the situation in Florida is only going to get worse. Are you saying he made a mistake and although he said the price would be $2,000, but when the home office of the company did the underwriting the price turned out to be $2500? Or are you saying the agent deliberately lied to get you to buy from him/her rather than another agent? (While the price would likely be identical, that does not enable the agent to lie. It does suggest to me you'd be wise NOT to drop coverage at this time. And after the weather clears, write a letter to the agent complaining about what you think was wrong, with a copy to the head of his agency and a copy to Citizen's Insurance Company's CEO, and ask them to reply.
