Home Insurance Question from Aloma, Florida
Answer given on July 21, 2019
If you received a claim check that exceeds the actual cost of the repairs for your damaged home, you have a couple of options. You can go ahead and replace the flooring that was apparently deemed to need replacement due to the water damage. If you do not want to do that, it is recommended that you contact your insurance adjuster and advise that the flooring did not need to be replaced and you have an overpayment from them for the difference. Ask the adjuster what you should do. Most likely they will ask that the overage be returned to them. It is unlikely you will be told to keep the money and it is best that you be up front about the situation. In the event that there is future water damage and it is determined you did not replace the floor in question but kept the money an issue could arise that might adversely affect any future payments for the home.
