Question 2 of 5 in Medicare, Medicaid And Medigaps (medsupp)
I do not understand the difference between "medigap" and "medicare advantage" plans. I just want to keep my own doctor and not pay much.
Do you know the difference between a PPO and an HMO? Although not exactly the same, you can think in terms of a Medigap plan being a PPO type of plan while the Medicare Advantage plan looks more like an HMO. If your doctors, labs, and hospital are in a Medicare Advantage network, you might consider this choice as a very low out-of-pocket option. Medicare Advantage plans can include prescription drugs, but if not, you can buy a separate drug Part D plan. You never have BOTH a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap plan, and if you have the Advantage plan you give up Original Medicare. Your coverage is established by your insurance carrier under the CMMS guidelines.
