Health Insurance Q & As

Question 5 of 5 in Health Insurance Decisions For Domestic Partners
My domestic partner moved out. She bought and paid for the individual insurance we had, But I was her dependent. Do I lose my coverage now?
Call your health insurance company and ask to "split the contract". You will keep the same benefits but your rate will reflect only your age, zip code, and (in some States) sex instead of a family rate. Consult an attorney regarding the insurance contract when you get divorce or separation advice, too: depending upon the court’s definition of support, you may have your former partner pay for the plan or you may find yourself paying for your former partner’s plan. Regardless of who pays, a divorce requires separation of the contracts as you are no longer "dependent status" or "family plan".
