Company History: The Hartford Fire Insurance Company was founded in 1810 by a group of merchants. The company formed The Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company in 1913 and acquired The Columbian National Life Insurance Company in 1959. In 1970 ITT made the largest corporate takeover in US history by acquiring The Hartford. Hartford became independent again in 1995 when ITT streamlined its operations and released a couple of its subsidiaries. In 2013 The Hartford sold its retirement plans to Mass Mutual, its life insurance to Prudential, and its broker-dealer to AIG. Now The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: HIG) is one of the largest investment and insurance companies based in the United States, with offices in Japan, Brazil, Ireland, England, and the United States. The Hartford was rated No. 73 on Forbes' 2013 list of America's Most Reputable Companies, No. 112 on the 2013 Fortune 500 list, and No 352 on the 2014 Barron's 500.

The Hartford employees approximately 18,800 people and has been rated No.3 in the market in terms of workers' compensation insurer based on direct written premiums.In Barron's Best Fund Families 2013, The Hartford was rated 8th Best Family Fund Overall, 12th Best Fund Family for Global Equity, and 4th Best Fund Family for Domestic Equity.
