"Because of someone else's fault we had a car accident and resulted in extremely bad back problems with hundreds of appointments with chiropractors, accupucture, Spinal Aid for decompression, many many kinds of epidurals including radio-frequency ablation to burn the nerve to deaden the pain, and even cardiac rehab to try and walk more like before the accident, and all that still does not help after 4 years, and American Family still will not pay us the 50,000 less lawyer fees and medical bills, so we will get at least half that Also American Family Insurance, after being with them over 40 years, NEVER ever mentioned that for a little bit more money, we could have been covered with a lot more than just 50,000, so evidently, they want to sell only the minimum and not reveal to the customer their other options How sad, and how bad it has been for us, and also the person who hit us, walked away free and unhurt"

"I have had American Family Insurance for 30 years and have had auto, home, renters and life policies with American Family. I am currently living a nightmare with my current claim. Almost five months until a settlement was reached on my inhabitable home and I have yet to see any money on the personal property side almost everything in my home was a loss. This claim has taken all of my time making sure my family is being adequately represented and yet I am no further along than I was in August when this happened. I have had multiple illnesses due to the stress and I have missed family events trying to document everything to try and reach a settlement. When approval is given by my adjuster for specific items and receipts are sent in no reimbursement is provided. This insurance company is a joke."

"We have been with American Family for almost 20 years with no claims. The end of July 2017 we received a letter stating that we needed to replace the roof on our home and garage because of curling shingles by the middle of October 2017 or we would be dropped. While there are a few areas of curling shingles, we have never had a leak and it is in no way a dire emergency. Two weeks later we received another letter stating the repairs had not been taken care of so they were dropping us. REALLY In our area, there is absolutely no way, whatsoever, that we could have the roof replaced in just two weeks. Two months is pushing it. If this is how you treat loyal customers, we will gladly look for another insurer and inform family, friends, and others how poorly American Family treats long-time customers."

"Insured for over 25 years with American Family Insurance. They non renewed my home policy after I installed a above ground pool in my backyard. I installed decking and some fencing. They did not make any recommendations for any improvements just cancelled my policy after over 25 years of coverage. I live over 10 miles out in the country and have no neighbors close. They said my pool was a liability issue."

"I had to hire a lawyer in order to get satisfactory help. This insurance company does everything possible to not pay anything they can get away with not paying. The other person in my accident was ticketed failure to yield riteaway and American Family still deducted 25 for my just being there. Their personal are extremely rude after my accident. I plan on dropping them as soon as my case is settled."

"This place is a scam. They just want your money. i am out $1000 because of them. My brother was also paying for insurance on an extra car. He called twice about it and they said he wasn't being charged l, but when we went in to make a complaint about me getting over charged for so long we real sued my brother was paying insurance on a car he sold a year before. They are liars and I would suggest going for anyone else except. I don't thing an insurance company could be any worse."

"They have stalled and made accusations based on slanderous lies against me the policy holder, from 3 people whom 1 of which I was going through a custody issue with. My life has been completely in shambles since I had a electrical fire, I might add fire department said dryer fire. .total loss. American family said rebuild, I have cried every time I've had to go there and they have paid the people I was buying home from contract 4 deed. The same people who threatened to make sure my life is completely miserable, I've been threatened and mistreated, my adjuster hasn't sent me a dime on receipts I turned in 3 wks ago. Hasn't finished my contents which he griped about every day, hasn't paid my pet bill at pet wellness center.and my temporary rental is about to expire in less than two months. I've lost my job because I don't feel safe driving to my hometown. I feel very railroaded and have never been treated with such total loss of morals by a American company, I was scheduled for oral surgery Jan 4th and because of the aforementioned I had to delay my surgery I'd been waiting for over 8 months, now I have a bad infection that's painful and is not responding to antibiotics, I seriously doubt I'll EVER be the same again because of the way this claim has been handled by my own company. I don't even think I'll want to purchase a home again, I think I'll be better off with a rental. American family is a horrible company. "

"Very unhappy with American family insurance when it comes to dealing with a theft of property. They are not covering my 3500 in stolen tools They will not pay to have my truck re keyed after it was stolen from my locked garage... Going to change company's as soon as truck if fixed up and get a lawyer.... "

"We were long time customers with AmFam for nearly 20 years. Had one weather claim on the house, 2 deer accidents, and a couple Jewelry losses. The latter happened within 2 years, causing AmFam to decide to drop our homeowners. We're told that a good agent would have warned us not file a lesser claim, but we had 3 agents in as many years, due to AmFam corporate. Great agents, lousy customer treatment. Great pay on claims, no questions asked, etc. but why insure if when you use the insurance, you get cancelled? Shocked after being a loyal customer this long"

"American Family sent an "inspector" unannounced to look at my house. After which I was informed that my replacement cost would rise to over $400,000. I have a 2000 square foot house and with demo and construction costs in my area averaging $108.00 per square foot this seemed excessive. I was informed that my policy would be adjusted to reflect this ridiculous amount unless I renegotiated my policy. My agent then used this invented figure to try to sell me more insurance by trying to sell me less insurance than the inflated amount they made up but significantly more than I'd had before. I dropped them like a hot potato. I used to believe they were trustworthy. I no longer do."

"The main reason I'm still with AMFAM is my agent is great. Also they give preferred rates so my rates are cheaper than other companies I've checked. My main problem is getting calls returned from claims. As of right now I've been waiting 2 weeks on questions about my med pay after an accident that wasn't my fault. This isn't my first issue with them. My next renewal will be with another co. If their rates are comparable. "

"I wouldn't advise consumers to participate in their First Choice program when choosing a contractor for claim damage. They hire poor quality workers. Then when you have a leaking roof following their installation you have to go to battle to get anything addressed. First Choice was a poor choice for us."

"I have a rural property 55 acres that I have been paying 100 a year for the last 5 years for liability only. Today I got a letter saying there is a new minimum farm/ranch charge of 250. I don't farm or ranch the property. The statement has two line items 1 line for liability equal 100 1 line for 150 dollars to bring to 250. These people must be about out of business if they are sinking to this level. "

"We have been trying to cancel our auto policy with American Family since February of this year. We have called every branch and level within American Family and they still haven't cancelled our policy but they reassured us that this matter had been taken care of. Yeah right they keep sending us a bill demanding payment for a policy we terminated. They have now turned us over to collections because of their inability to maintain their accounts correctly. Luckily we saved every email letter and phone bill to prove we have made all these attempts to cancel and American Family can't seem to get their lousy computer systems or brain dead employees to get the hint that we don't want their policy anymore Now we have to involve our current auto insurance carrier and a lawyer to clear stupid crap off our credit bureau all because someone doesn't know how to hit the "cancel" button at American Family. Thanks American Family for the major hardship you have caused us. Never again"

"They cannot even keep billing straight. Again. Paid bill ... all was OK. Today get call that I owe 2200. 00 and cancelled the insurance. Their screw ups have cost me more than once.Waiting for three hours to find out if I am insured."

"I've been with American Family for many years. Recently had a car accident and my car was declared as total loss since the cost of repair exceed 75% of the value. The adjuster gave me the lowest price that he found in United States not considering the condition of the car. After two weeks of the accident he called me and said will have the car towed to my house if I don't agree with the price. I have a wonderful agent but when come to the claim it is another story.People I know had a good reimbursement for their car with total loss and of course they are NOT with American Family."

"Been with American Family for many years. Then had an accident with another American Family insured 100% their fault. Adjuster made me agree verbally to a maximum injury payment and date to close claim BEFORE I HAD EVEN BEEN TO THE DOCTOR. All they cared about was to cut me off. Spinal damage and now I have to pursue Medical on my policy why would the same company not just want to do the RIGHT thing and pay for my injury? Time to shop for insurance..."

"They now look at frequency of occurrences regardless of whether or not they had to payout. They are dropping my family because of 6 occurrences in 5 years. 2 were comprehensive and should not have been listed. Of the remaining 4 they only paid on one claim. Doesn't matter any more if ACCIDENTS are your fault or not. We have been with them 16 years and have always been given trouble with claims. Go elsewhere "

"Delays in paying off claimsweeks not days. Took 12 days for them to consider my counter offer on my vehicle. Once we agreed to a dollar amount they failed to payoff my totaled-out truck auto loan in 3 weeks time. Even though they stated they had made prompt payment. I had to make another payment so as to not affect my credit rating. They towed my truck away from the body shop without my permission and without even making payment. "

"I have been with American Family for over 34 years. This is the first time I filed a claim which was for roof damage. The claims agent was slow in handling claim and had no communication unless I had contacted him.It took eight months from the time I filled the roof damage claim till roof was replaced. Their hired roofing engineering firm declared the roof as compromised and needed to be replaced."

"We have found that the OSB sheathing on our house is deteriorating and this damage is being denied coverage by the adjuster and the agent commented to me 'you have a MAINTENANCE ISSUE' And when i asked why the claim wasn't being paid on this nine year old house he had the nerve to ask me 'didn't you READ THE POLICY??'I HAD asked him to give me the best policy which i was told was their Gold Star Elite which supposedly covers everything by evidently not the 'MAINTENANCE ISSUE' problems.Now we will have to remove and reside the entire dwelling spending many hundreds of thousands of dollars oh but it's a MAINTENANCE ISSUE'ASAP we are going to DROP AMERICAN FAMILY like the lead balloon company it isDisgusting"

"Been with since 1977...three homes three cars and 2 life policies. Since we have been with so long we have reasonable rates...but just try to put in a claim and they will find reason to not pay. Sold one house and one car...soon as we sell other home income property I will pay any company higher rates and feel like I am a valued customer American Family could not care less about a family unless they get their "pound of flesh".....terrible would never recommend. "We have been insured with American Family for home and automobile three times since 1976. We changed 3 times because of rising rates after 5 to 10 years. The only claim we ever had was for a stone from a snow plow truck in 1981 and from another dump truck on a 2 lane highway in 2012. Interestingly both times the Home Owners Gold policy we have increased the premium substantially and then the auto insurance premium increased. Mind you .. the claims were for a 100 AUTO windshield repair . . . not a Home Insurance claim. We live in south central Wisconsin in a ten year old home and never had a home claim . . EVER. We just got a 60 day notice that our Home owners premium will be going up from 538 2012 last year to 765 this year2013. We also had a 1M umbrella policy and cancelled that 2 years ago since the premium on that increased from 238.yr. in 2004 to 462 in 2011. Never had a claim. In addition the Auto premium increased this year for our 2009 Saturn Aura and 2010 GMC Canyon from 1100/yr to 1347/yr. No reasons were given and our agent was no help. I went into the office for an "insurance review" and all she wanted to do was "suggest" I get the umbrella policy again to lower the Home owners premium and increase my deductible on auto to 500.Lastly we also have gotten new letters of coverage each of the last several years which "clarify reduce or eliminate" coverage our Gold Policy used to cover. So in other words we are being asked to pay more for less and less coverage and more exclusions. Hate to say it but all insurance companies seem to be pulling this along with increasing Home replacement values to drive up policy premiums. They say our home replacement is 206000 and I could build it brand new including a green belt lot less than a mile away for 185000 from the same builder. "

"Had two severe hail storms occur in our area one in 2010 and the other in 2012. Adjuster sent out by AmFam after the first storm stated the roofs on our buildings only needed minor repairs/replacement of a few shingles other roofs in area were replaced by other insurers. The roofing contractors 3who looked at the roofs stated the roofs were total loss and needed replaced. AmFam made partial payments then had to be prompted with threat to report them to state department of insurance to get them to agree to send out another adjuster. Second adjuster agreed roofs needed replaced. After second hail storm the new roofs were fine however some siding needed replaced. Siding was replaced due to holes however the color could not be matched we complained but agreed to only replace the broken pieces thinking this would help keep rates down. Now we received a notice of cancellation for having too many claims even though the claims were for losses due to acts of god. So now we have to find a new insurance provider after having been with AmFam for 17 years for buildings that have mismatched siding. The total paid by AmFam for the losses was approximately equal to 5 years of our premiums."

"After a severe hail and extreme wind storm a few years ago American Family only paid for the front of my house to have a new roof and NOT the back. The front and back had the same excessive damage loose shingles etc. However only the front was repaired. I had to pay for the roof on the back of my house to be completely redone. Now the rest of my neighbors who had similar damage from this storm yet had different insurance companies had the roof of the ENTIRE HOUSE replaced "

"American Family is one of the few companies that requires a vehicle inspection to have a simple windshield changed. So the company I wanted to hire to handle the windshield replacement is all ready to go and American Family says "not so fast" we have to inspect your windshield. Fast forward 3 days still no inspection/call from American Family and my windshield is worse than ever. At this point I'm not driving my car until I get new glass and American Family couldn't care less. I already have a new policy with State Farm. As soon as my glass claim is processed I'm dumping this crappy company that has no concern for my safety or that of my kids. According to my new State Farm agent no inspection is required on windshield replacement. Great strategy to lose customers American Family See ya."

The American Family adjuster said there was no damage even though it was clear that granules from my roofs shingles showed pinging from the hail. "

"Hail damage to 12 houses in my neighborhood. All were covered by house insurance except three. Us three have AmFam. Clearly could see the damage but the ajduster blamed it on the shingles. I see no rider telling me what type of shingles. Funny that the roof vents and soffit were covered but just under my deductable amount. They paid me nothing then sent me a letter stating that my insurace premium was going up due to the heavy storm damage in my area. They have done me no good at all..but they have not heard the last from me yet. I have heard nothing but bad about American Family "

"Hail storm in my neighborhood. All wood shake roofs were replaced except mine covered by American Family Insurance. American Family gave me 1600 toward the repair of the roof. Repair was unfeasible as testified by a couple of roofing companies. I contested the claim to no avail."

"Can not get addresses correct. Change one and they have others. Took three times to get all addresses correct. On claims they took so long that I had to deal with medical billers to avoid going into collection. Avoid at all costs."

"After reading other reviews about ALL insurance companies they sound pretty much alike. I have been with American Family for over 25 years. I had one claim of 3000. on a truck 15 years ago and they raised my rates for 3 years to cover the amount of the claim. The only other claim I have had is a recent water damage. The adjuster was a jerk and only wanted to sell me more insurance. When I got the results of the claim it was for 1200. THis was to replace the floor subfloor a cabinet and door thrushhold.He wanted me to re-use alot of the materials also. Who do you know that would do all that for such little money? He said" I have someone that will do it for that." Gotta be a scam. My agent was of NO use. Even asked to extend the time to complete work to do it our selves but the adjuster said NO. Wish I could find a decent and honest company to give my money to but when it comes to insurance there is no such thing. "

"Had a hail storm in 2011. Am Fam sent a third person inspection co to look at roof. Only would cover repairs to small part of roof. Twelve neighbors got new roofs. Was told by roofer Am Fam needed twice as much damage as other ins to fix roof. Now we are re roofing the house at our expense because of the hail damage. "

"Cautiously review any insurance update and policy changes that you may be unaware of. My insurance policy has been changed adding loop holes so that they do not need to follow new laws for consumer protection from insurance companies. "

"14 year customer filed first claim for damaged shingles. About 1.5 years ago they changed wording in policy stating in a round about way stating they wont cover my shingles. They will only replace the damaged ones even though their claims adjuster said the entire slope had to be replaced. A long story short I ended up buying additional ins. from them that was suppose to cover older shinglesIT DIDNT. IM OUT."

"From my experience of looking into getting insurance for both Auto and Home it is becoming apparent that as long as you do not have any issues and just pay your premiums on time and accept any and all increases these companies are not too bad. The reason is because you do not have to deal with them.Now of course if your case is clear and there are no citations against you and you are not at fault ... well then in most cases things seem to flow along just nicely .... I have read though of terrible experiences even in these cases.But when you actually have to speak to these Agents like in my case about a recent premium increase on my Homeowners policy ... well then the ugly side soon appears and one can only wonder how these agents are allowed to practice when they do not even understand the most rudimentary elements of discussion.Just my two cents .... I am switching but with my eyes wide open .... I do not relish it but insurance is a neccessary evil."

"Expensive Credit score based premiums a huge minus and downfall. Ive never had an insurance claim in my life but because I cant pay my Visa card I pay higher insurance How is that justified I cant pay my clinic/hospital bill but I have to pay higher vehicle and home insurance than everyone else. So if you are a BAD driver or make insurance claims a lot thats long as your credit is better than mine youll probably still pay less then me. "Our home insurance rates have almost doubled...they say its because of the hail storm of 2008 and also the fires that detroyed a lot of homes in the last few years. WE have been with them 12 years...3 autos 1 motorcycle and 1 house....never submitted a claim. I recently discovered that we should have been getting about a 25 discount because we have a qualifying concrete tile roof. I had to point this out to my agent and when I asked her when they had started that discount she said we just started that. Amazing that I found an American Family form online for this roof discount that shows a form revise date of July 2008...meaning that they have offered the discount for at least the last three years I am shopping for new insurance right now and also trying to figure out if I can make American Family pay me back for the three years at least I should have had the discount which amounts to over 2000. Does anyone know I feel totally ripped off"

"AMFAM would not pay for any portion of the water pipe that broke in our downstairs basement I.e. this was a cost that I had to bear of over 600.00 plus pay my 1000 deductable to support the cost of the dry out of the rooms affected by the pipe break as well the replacement of carpet etc.The local AMFAM agents office is about 2 miles from our home yet he never came by nor called us to see the damage or just to get involved"

"Their two recommended roofers said our roof needed to be replaced. Neighbors on all sides got new roofs however American Family refused to replace our roof. They used a very narrow parameter to get out of the coverage. We had Gold Star Special Deluxe coverage on our home umbrella coverage and all our business and personal cars covered by them. We paid them a fortune and they refused to cover our roof damage. Then they refused to renew our policy so they wouldnt have to pay in the future. They suck"

"I was told they would cover a rental car and just a few days before I was to return the rental car they informed me they would not be covering the rental car anymore for absolutely no reason. I had to fight for 3 days straight to get them to cover for my rental car and in the end they didnt cover the whole thing. While other homes around us with far less damage were getting their roofs replaced American family wanted only to repair ours in spots. "I came home from work one day and the neighbor told me someone had been there taking pictures of my house. I called my agent and he informed me that they do this every so often. A few days later I received a letter in the mail from AMFAM stating that I had to replace my whole roof. There is nothing wrong with the roof. The letter also stated that our home owners insurance would be down graded and the roof pro-rated in the event there was ever a claim. It also went on to say not to worry as our premiums would not be affected...Well thats just neat..less insurance and pay the same. I feel this company tried to strong arm me. "Hail on our home, one adjuster said no roof damage but after 80% of the homes on our street were getting reroofed I called and asked for another inspector to look at the roof. After the second time AmFam says yes, I need a total reroof on the house. Since it took so long to get things rechecked it may be a year before it can get done. Winter is some of the time issues but I could have had this done if the first guy knew what he was talking about. Since the hail damage my premiums have doubled. "

"I never got beyond the quote with this incredibly weird company. First the agent said he could get me auto insurance for about $300+ as he wrote a policy for his mother 5 years older then me for that, he quoted $700.00 to me with never a ticket or accident. Next: The homeowners insurance. The quote was average (I already had 5 others). Then said he would have to take pictures of the outside of my house. Gut feeling said stop! but I ignored it. "Had a fire loss and reported claim, within an hr of the fire department leaving, American Family had sent a company to do the temporary repairs to my home. I spent the night at the inlaws and the company reduced the deductible. They said I was intitled under the contract to arange temp living at their cost and since I went to the inlaws that counted. As far as the rate increase, My agent reviewed my past 6 years of premiums with me and it showed that me rate had come down almost every year and even with the 25% increase I was paying less then I was six years ago. "Do not use! I have always used and recommended American Family Insurance to family as well as business associates but not any more. I had a small fire on 05/13/2009 in my home. The damage was mostly smoke damage...nothing structural. The process and the insurance company have been a nightmare ever since day one. The repairs to the home were delayed for months due to the company and the adjuster who would not make a decison or take actions to get the information needed in oreder for the contractor to move forward to make the repairs. Upon the completion of the repairs months later there still remained a smell of smoke in the home. This situation was address with the insurnace company as well as the contractor. The possition that the insurance company took was "I was on my own to work it out with the contractor" but due to the full payment to the contractor they would not do anything further. Now that is a year plus since the fire I am stil trying to get the contents paid for. I have had meetings with the adjuster, her supervisor all the way to the district manager yet no conclusion to the matter. I filed complaints with the state insurance board and still no responce to address this claim. I have always thought that American Family was the best out there but it is clear that Family is just part of the name, they have not treated me as family would. If you need insurance coverage look elsewhere..Do not use this company. "

"I called them to see how much if any discount we would get when replaced our roof. We were considering and did install a 30 year warrenty replacement roof product. I was told 25 percent savings on our preminum. The roof was replaced with the 30 year product and they only gave us a percent discount. Our agent seems disconected to our concerns."

"I had a septic backup in 2005 and Amfam referred a "preferred" vendor that stacked all of my septic saturated furniture in the corner of my basement and left 2 in. of septic in my furnace! The furnace blew the septic and bacteria throughout my home and contanamated everything including, furniture, clothes, pictures, anything pourous andmy kids coughed up blood for a week! "American Family insurance refused to assess the damage on my roof when my city had the highest recorded windstorm in its history that caused severe damage to my roof. After 4 months of fighting and pleading to have a second adjuster view the damage, our city had the 2nd highest recorded windstorm in its history and further damage to our roof. Due to the open claim, the adjuster could not award damages yet cited pre-existing damages from the open claim that weren't awarded. Bottom line, I've spent $500 on preventive and temporary repair, filed 2 claims both at a $1,000 deductible and only awarded $1,290 for a repairs that are estimated from $5,500 to $7,000."

"Our auto insurance rates have been increased $20.00 a month every six months for the past two years due to alleged credit/insurance rating (because people with bad credit automatically file fraudulent insurance claims, right?!??!). Today, we received notice from the SOBs that our homeowner's is being canceled in February '09 because of our credit rating, and their top secret "home inspection" which allegedly found peeling paint on one side of the house, cat carriers on our DECK (there are NONE), weeds in our yard, and "mold" on another outside wall (again, NONE), and an oven in our yard (which just so happens to have been where our garbage cans are stacked -- gee do you suppose the oven was GARBAGE??!?!?!). In 12 years, we have NEVER, EVER filed a claim -- not on the homeowners, not on our auto -- not even when my husband fell off the roof of our motorhome and broke his back and shattered his heel. "Have had American Family for many years. Now have both auto and home. No issues with a couple of small auto claims. But twice have been denied a roof replacement for hail, in 2 different homes. In first case, everyone in the block got a new roof, except me, I only got the garage roof!?! Now, recently, had hail damage in May. They sent a very young, inexperienced adjuster, from the South to inspect the roof. I live in Minnesota. He says there is hail damage, my covered gutters look like someone took a hammer to them every inch or so. I can see it from the interior of my home. I have never seen hail come down so hard in my life. I lost hundreds of dollars of vegetation, it was shredded to bits like someone chopping a salad! Now they say I should do a "roof repair" in a patchwork of shingle fixes here and there on every slope of my roof. That will do even more damage, not to mention making my roof look like checkerboard. My contractors said no one in their right minds would do a repair like that and warranty it. I am still fighting with claims, and now it's Dec., and snow is flying, so I'll have to wait until spring for a "reinspection." What a joke. No one recommends a roof repair like that. Claims through the catastrophe center are a nightmare. My own agent has been helpful and supportive, as well as reponsive, but he is not involved in this claim process. Good luck, when you have a major claim, like a roof. Probably will change insurance companies."

In addition, we got no communication from our company even after having issues with our contractor. "My entire family was with American Family for almost 20 years. We have 6 cars in our household and all of them were insured with American Family until recently. For the first 10 years we had a great agent who always made sure we were treated right. My mother's house was also insured with American Family as well during this period. I also had business insurance policies with American Family. Now in the past 4 years we've had 4 different agents, none of them were anywhere near as good as our first agent who retired. None of them were helpful with anything other than paying the bill. Our original agent was great at getting their woeful claims service to actually do something. Once he was gone we were left on our own. Poor contact, rude treatment on claims that weren't our fault. In one case where I was rear ended I received better treatment by the defendant's insurance company than I did with my own. The last straw was their new policy on adjusting rates according to credit score. I don't care what the industry trend is. This is flat out wrong. When you have a good-paying long-term customer you don't just jack rates because their credit card balance happened to be too high around renewal time. I don't think it's right to do it for employment either. Bad credit doesn't mean your a bad person. I happen to currently have credit scores well over 800 but I'd hate to think that should a bad period come up it would only be made worse by my insurance company "piling it on" It's as bad as that BS universal default that credit cards like to use to cancel or jack your interest rates. The last straw was when my rates were jacked up over $250 on my last renewal. No claims, tickets etc either. No bad credit. I think they just wanted to get rid of me. So in summary poor claims support, high agent turnover and arbitrary rate practices finally got me to dump them. I understand how insurance works and why it's necessary in this day and age. What I don't understand is how you can alienate your good customers who happily pay your premiums."

"It is pretty bad when you are with an insurance company for 20 years and your agent still doesn't know who you are.The only thing that I had ever claimed prior to the one I will state later, is a windshield in a car. I had recently filed a claim on 2 household computers(one laptop, one pc), that had been damaged by lightning. American Family placed them under a single claim. After they depreciated everything, and took out my deductilbe, they left me with squat to replace both computers. I was able to replace the laptop with the supposed reimbursement for both computers. I was told they would pay me for a third of the cost, even though I was told that they would cover the expense. They also sent me a letter telling me that I would be getting a better rate if my credit score was better. My score is well over 700. BOTTOM LINE - DON'T TRUST AMERICAN FAMILY! "I agree with what others have said about their agent with Am Fam. Ours is great to deal with but the company sucks. Last year when they went to credit checking on EVERYONE, including existing (and loyal)customers, our homeowners premium went from $374 to $570. They only looked at our credit score, not the amount (or lack there-of) of claims filed in the 15+ years we have been customers, and determined that because our credit is bad that we are more apt to file a lot of claims. Then we had ice dam damage in Dec. 2007 and had to file a claim. Well, guess what, our premium is now 856.00. American Family would not pay the claim for the damage to my car. It took two months for them to decide. They are the worst insurance company I have ever been associated with. "I have read the comments from other clients of American Family and My story reads the same. I have been a customer for over 30 years and never had to make a claim till this year when a tornado went through my neighborhod. They have sent out 2 adjustors and still refuse to pay the cost to have my roof fixed. I live in a townhome and our roofs all have to be fixed by the same contractor. I have spoke to my management company and several neighbors who have different insurance companies and they have all recieved their checks for repairs without any problem. My agent is of no help and I have spoke to several different people but all you get is a run around. I can only believe that the "people" who are making good comments about Amfam. are employees of the company who are being paid to post thses comments. What a Horrible company!!"

"Met with our AMFAM agent who explained that we have excellent credit but because we live in AMFAM's "retirement territory," our multiple vehicle rates were now being increased by $22 a month. We have had no at-fault auto claims, etc., whatsoever with AMFAM, nor any homeowner policy claims. Our agent could not get a satisfactory, logical explanation from AMFAM corporate for this increase. We are dropping AMFAM, as we believe this is yet another for-profit, thinly veiled method of getting around their previous, now outlawed "red zoning" practices previously litigated against AMFAM in class action lawsuits. Insurance companies need to be under more aggressive federal and state watchdog commissions to address and stop these outrageous punitive practices that serve only the insurance companies' bottom line: profit at the expense of consumers. This is blatant discrimination based on an age group."

"My local Agent was good to deal with, no problems with her office. American Family the corp. is what I am not happy with. I had two cars , a boat, a motorcycle and home owners policy with them for over 10 years. the first few years was ok, then they stated to raise my fees on all my policies, $20,$40 $80$100 and up and up. I had one claim with them on my son's car, hit a deer. they did cover that without to much trouble, but rates kept going up. I finally chaged to Erie Ins. Co. have alot better coverage and cheaper rates and lower deductables, when I canceled with American Family, I had found out that they did not have my new boat that I had bought over a year ago on thier records, they were still showing coverage for my old boat and were billing me montly out of my checking account for all my policies so I had not noticed that the did not switch the old boat to the new boat, thought they did casuse the monthly rate kept going up. Anyway I did not have any claims with them on the boat but when I canceled my Insurance the backed billed me for the difference in the amount of the boat policies, it was there mistake, but I said I would be fair and to tell me how much it was. when they sent me a bill for that, they also billed me for the motorcycle insurnace cause of a rate clause in their policy that say's that if I cancel it early then they can charge me a different montly rate then if I would have carried the policy the full year term. so they are charging me an addidtional amount for each month convered before I canceled, almost doubled. I know it sounds confusing and it is, but this how the treat their customers, they don't really care, it's all about pinching every penny out of you they can. "

"Would not recommend this Insurance company to anyone after experiences over past 5 years.Have been with this company for almost 15 years..filed one small claim about 10 years ago which didn't amount to much so there wasn't a problem. After that though they would continously come up with reasons and ways to either raise my deductible or my premiums..A year ago we experienced hail during a storm..every one of my neighbors were qualified for roof replacement by their insurance companies..I was denied by American the same time they also were raising my homeowners premium because my credit rating wasn't quite as good as they said it could be?...I've had perfect credit rating for past 10 years with no complaints from anyone else?....Had same problems with Auto coverage...I had perfect driving record with no accidents or claims over 20 year period...last year I had accident not involving another vehile...they paid for the repair but immediately raised my insurance rates dramatically....I've had a number of vehicles insured with this company through the years and have had nothing but problems with them trying to either raise my deductibles or premiums every 6 months...having to constantly complain or renegotiate until they'd readjust rate to where it was previously...can't take it any more and will be changing companies a matter of fact I've already found a company that gives me more overall coverage on all my vehicles and saves me over $900.00 / year over American Family...smooth talkers..don't let them con you like they did me!!! "

"I live in Wisconsin and we have been hit with 10 inches of rain so far in the month of june 2008,needless to say my sump pump faile me,which resulted in my basement flooding with about 2 inches of is 2 weeks since and they still haven't been able to come and survey the damage.they are a terrible company stay away from them,and my local agent is no help and very worthless he refered me to the 1-800 number what a joke."

"We had bad ice daming this winter which caused roof and interior damage to several rooms in the house. Adjuster came out in December and cut a check for $2600.00, and told us if when spring came we discovered more damage then we simply needed to submit the estimates to get paid. When spring arrived I got estimates and they totaled over $20,000. I Faxed in the estimates and they sent out another adjuster and he came up with an additional $6,000. Why do we bother to get estimates if they simply ignore them. If American Family knows a contractor that will do the work for the money they have alocated then they should supply us with one. I don;t care who does the work so long as it is done right. 2 homes, numerous cars and motorcycles, and 14 years later and they just don't seem to care. I am going to go to the local news media if they do not get this issue resolved."

"Just had a major storm blow though our area. Most homes in our neighborhood have severe siding and roof damage. Adjuster looked at my damage and made the comment that it's not as severe as most peoples and it looks like "old damage" from a previous storm so my claim will probably be denied. Also he stated that only so much money is allocated per storm so there's only so much to go around, sorry. After 15 years with this company I'm through!"

"I have had all my insurance with American Family for 13 years with no claims EVER and recently I had some major storm damage that included hail and high winds that ripped shingles off my roof and dented the siding. The claims adjuster came by today and told me that my claim was going to be a little over $600. It sure is funny that all my nighbors have had both the siding and roof replaced and mine has no $600 worth of damage."

"They are using a credit report as justification to increase my home owner's premiums even more than they usually do. Can't wait for my auto premium notice. Last year I had a dispute with a hospital over some medical charges. The hospital ended up sending the unpaid balance to a collection agency. After numberous discussions with the hospital billing department, they realized their error and adjusted the bill down to $60 which was immediately paid. American Family just sent me the notice of the increase because my credit worthiness is suspect. What a line of bull! The home owner's policy is paid from an escrow account - they will always get their money. I have been a homeowner for 34 years and have NEVER had a late payment, as document in all three credit reports. I have been with American family for over twenty-five years; currectly have two houses; three cars and an umbrella policy with them. I will not renew any of these policies!!!"

"Please folks, heed the messenger: I was involved in a serious crash back in 2001, the then teenage driver was also insured with AMFAM, and I am here to tell you: AMFAM will only screw you and if possible never, and I mean "NEVER" pay you for your damages. I had to take the company to a full trial in Dec 2006, won and here we are today March 2008 and I have not been paid one penny from AMFAM......I am now seeking Bad Faith against AMFAM, I strongly suggest seeking out coverage with anyone except AMFAM........ "They are using credit report information to determine your premium. I don't think that is ethical. People that are sick, layed off from their jobs, and otherwise screwed by corporate america, don't need to be bayonetted further due to hard luck. If an analysis were done on their methodology, I'm sure you will find that it unfairly punished poor and disabled folks while the rich pay the least. I think that premiums should be based on your personal habits (smoker, drinker) and driving record (if auto)."

"I signed up with AmFam 15 years ago for an auto policy and recommended them to my parents for thier auto and home polices. Once my parents signed up with them I started to receive monthly premium invoices for their cars and they received mine, but not every month just every other month. We only share the same last name, we have different addresses, I a only one covered on my policy an my mom, dad and sister show on a totally different policy. I have no idea how they messed that up. I finally got so fustrated after they said they would correct it but never did and I cancelled my policy with them. My parents kept with them. 9 years ago my fiancee and I purchased a new home and decided to try it again with the same AmFam agent so we signed up both our cars and our home policies with her. All were signed up at same time but premiums were due on different days which was a pain, but price was best around. 2 years later I was going through rough financial times and circumstances arose where I deeded my home into my fathers name. So policy was amended showing my dad as insured but kept my fiancee as an additional insured and the policy was written as a rental instead of owner occupied being my father had his home covered with them already. The premium was increased due to the change of being a rental property. A year later I put a new mortgage on the home and deeded it back into my fiancee and my name and the balance of the years premium was paid at that time there was 2 or 3 months left to be paid for the years premium. So the policy was amended again back into our names and added mortgage company as mortgagee and was to show as owner occupied and no longer rental. With it no longer showing as a rental the premium should have been lower as it was before so I tried to contact them to see why it wasnt lowered. I tried calling and leaving messages, I sent faxes and sent emails and no one contacted me for two months at which at that time I found out that they did show the new mortgage company on the policy but they also were showing my fathers name as an additional insured, which he was not. They did show the mortgage company correct but they were showing the my mailing address as my parents my parents address, which the mortgage company did not like since the home was to be owner occupied and they did not like seeing my father as an additional insured which he was not and to top it off they sent the mortgage company the bill for the new premium, which was not to be paid by them either. Needless to say the mortgage company almost called my loan in full since all this information was not showing as it was supposed to be. I had to call the corporate office and complain about it and complain about agent not calling back about premium amount not changing. I wanted to know who was getting screwed? Me for paying an amount equal to a premium for a rental, but with less insurance coverage? Or my dad who paid for more coverage but didnt get it. The corporate office said agent would contact me with explination and have information corrected as it should be. Well I did receive the corrected information and sent it to the mortgage company but didnt receive a call from anyone with explaination. But soon after I did receive a letter from AmFam telling me my homeowners policy was cancelled. With all this mess going on and with the wrong mailing address showing and not corrected as requested two months earlier I never received an invoice for the new annual premium. I went into the office and went off. The agent reinstated the homeowners policy right then and there. BUT the next letter I get from AmFam is telling me my homeowners is increasing due to a credit report that was pulled when the NEW(?) homeowners policy was reissued as one is pulled all the time on new policies issuied. It was cancelled one day and reissued on the next and it was due to thier error. I am preferred client, or so I was told! I had muiti policy discounts and was an existing client for 9 years and there were no changes on policy and only 1 windshield claim and 1 towing claim have ever filed and it was one day to the next and they pulled my credit report and had to raise my premium because of their ignorance? I HATE MY AGENT! But I havent found a company that would beat the price. I did contact another agent to see if I could transfer my policy to him to be my agent, he was very very nice called back right away and said he would see if it was possible. He called back right away and left me a message stating it would be possilbe but he asked if I would call my agent first and let her know I would be requesting the transfer. He said I might want to see if she would have me give her another chance or even appologize to me and explain what happened or if I prefered he would do it for me. I called him back and left a message for him stating I'd rather not ever talk to her again if I didn't have to and said would appreciate if he would take care of it for me. I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM AGAIN! I am still with the agent I hate but am contemplating on whether paying the quite significant amount difference is worth all of this or not. The premiums amounts for me have been quite lower and both the windshield claim and towing claim were issuied immediately the day after they were filed, but the customer serive by my agent is very much to be desired and that's not even writing about the automatic payments that were set up for the auto and home premiums or should I say the automatic payments that were NOT set up! I HATE MY AGENT!"

"After an ice storm with both roof and contents damage, I am getting the run around from three different adjusters. Different things are being requested and no one has a standardized protocol. In fact, I'm being told they will depreciate my things until replaced when sending out a check. I don't have the resources to go out and replace all the things damaged or destroyed by a power surge and leak. Ugh!"

"We have had an exceptionally terrible experience with AMFAM. While on vacation in Texas, I struck a deer that ran into the road crippling my vehicle. This left me stranded in Texas. I tried to call roadside assistance, this was all automated and very unhelpful. I sat out in the 40 degree weather with my 2 young children, in the pitch black, hoping not to be stuck by oncoming traffic until the local police arrived. They were the only helpful people that we have met so far during this whole ordeal. I have tried to find out what is going on with my car multiple times, and I am ALWAYS transfered to someone's voicemail. One person told us that we were going to have to do "a little extra leg work" to get this taken care of. I am sick of leaving messages on voicemails and not being able to talk to a real human. I do not pay monthly to do "extra leg work." This is why I pay my insurace bill monthly. Every person we have spoke with tells us something different or that they can not answer our questions. We were first told that our car would be shipped back to Las Vegas to be fixed. Now we are informed that will not happen. We spent $900 on plane tickets to get home, to return to work , and now we are told that we have to somehow find a repair shop in TEXAS, when we live in LAS VEGAS, find the time off work and school and the money to fly back to Texas to pick up our car and drive ALL the way back to Las Vegas. I thought that the reason that I have insurance is so I don't have to go through all of this. And, I thought, that for sure, with the trusted name of American Family Insurace as my company, I would not have to worry about my vehicle since I have since December 31st. This experience has brought me to the conclusion that American Family Insurance is not "the most trusted and valued service-driven insurance company," as your mission states. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY!!"

"Great company w/ nice people.. right up until you need them! My agent from them was fantastic, the claims guy on the phone was great too. Yet, I am changing company's after dealing with the claims adjusters. The guy was horribly unprofessional, down right rude, threatening and impatient. The company stalled paying for over 3 weeks. I almost sued them for bad faith until a manager stepped in and paid off the claim. I had to hire a lawyer before they paid. In the end, damage to my car cost $6000 and they paid $4000, I would ask for the rest of money, but it's just not worth fighting with them over $2000. Good Luck, Jason"

"Insure home, 2 autos, 2 motorcycles. In almost 20 yrs of combined insurance....2 small house claims...each under $300. One deer/auto less than $1500 and one auto comp claim for under $600....rates keep increasing, our driving records are excellent. What gives ? Agent is ok, but just wants to sell "more coverage". Why? Disappointing to be a good driver/insured w/no kids & our rates keep raising - obviously, very little in claims and yet consistent increases. Afraid to switch as we have had WORSE service. (Don't even mention Allstate). Is there any hope out there? Thought being a good responsible driver was supposed to have rewards. ????"

"Love my agent, hate my ins. adjuster. Had severe water damage, policy covers me to replace at current pricing. Adjuster said they'd cover everything. Gave me a $12,000 check right away and told me to submit quotes for the rest of the work needed to be done, and more money would be "no problem". The total of repairs is about $27,000.00, which comes to $13,000 additional which I need because I can't start the project without it. The few times she answered my calls her response is always "Don't worry,additional money is no problem. I didn't know your damage was so extensive when I cut the check and did the estimates. We'll give you what you need. Go ahead and get started." My damage is such that I can't get started unless I know that the additional funds will be here. She hasn't returned calls or come up with any money and it's been a month since the initial check. She hasn't even come back to see the additional damage that was discovered. My floors were all pulled out, my walls are all cut into. I have asthma (which I told the adjuster) and the dust and dirt is making my asthma worse. I'm living in terrible conditions, most people would have gone to a hotel and stayed put until the repairs were finished. But not me. No, I wanted to be considerate of AM FAM. I didn't want to "take advantage" of them. "We're here for you. We'll take good care of you" they all say when they want to sign you up. But the real truth is in the results. Right now I'm very close to contacting the insurance commission in Washington state where I live. "American" Family is a bunch of crap. The very name is an insult to America."

"I have had insurance with American Family for almost twenty years. I am now paying premiums for five cars, two houses, a boat and a motorcycle. When my son came home from serving in the Army overseas, he found an excellent sales job that gave him a $500 monthly allowance for a vehicle, so he bought a nice car. Since he didn't have much credit history I had to co-sign his loan. This lowered my credit rating, which American Family used as an excuse to jack up the home owmers policy on my two homes $700. This is the reward you get for raising children who serve their country and come home and get a nice job. American should be removed from their name. Like most of the other respondents here I loved my agents. Most of them quit because they don't like corporate, but I have been with this agent about seven years and my only regret in leaving is I will miss my agent."

"I was hit by a driver with a small amount of isurance (25k). Her insurance company was Natiowide - I injuried my left wrist to the point where I need surgery because I'm now limited in my ability to use it and it's my dominate hand. Nationwide paid me the full $25k quickly and I then began to talk with American Family regarding my under insured coverage. I had racked up about $12k in medical bills already and the surgery is going to be another 15k+ after everything. Well after almost 8 months of "reviewing" my case they have determined that it was pre-exisiting and that they're not going to pay anything including my medical bills coverage. So I now have a lawyer (family friend) that can't believe that they didn't make any sort of offer. I've never had a claim and I'm changing insurance companies now because I also have about 2+ million dollars worth of insurance with them and if they don't pay claims why have it?"

"I believe American Family is mishandling its approach to using credit bureau information to set premiums. We recently were notified that our premiums would go up due to our credit report findings. Further investigation showed that American Family used the wrong social security number when securing the credit report. This resulted in wasted time and effort on our part. We didn't bother to renew - we sought a new company and actually ended up paying only 60% of what we were paying with American Family. "

"While my American Family agent and his staff have been excellent in handling all my insurance needs, including quistions and my agent's staff are just as helpful, their claims department is horrific to deal with. I recently had to notifiy AmFam that my husband had and accident (on 4/3) and as of May7 I am still trying to fully investigate and handle the claim in good faith. At present I have spoken with not only most of the American Family Claims Department's managers, supervisors, and regional managers, I have also have had to speak with the American Family Corporate Headquaters Claims Dispute/Complaint Department (all the way to the top of that department), and am now having to deal with their VP of General Operations of Claims. As of yet, there is no resolution in sight, only inconsistancies in their personnel's statements regarding the bad faith handling of claim, excuses/ambiguous answers, and each individual I speak with tells a different tale of how my claim was/is being handled. I have been with this company for more than 15 years and as a result of their Claims Department I have begun to seek out a new insurer."

"great rates, excellent agents, but the claims side of the company low balled every claim I have had and I havent had very many concidering how long I have been with them. They may pay better if it's a bigger claim, but they are not fair with the smaller claims."
