"Terrible communication. They just issued new cards....minus eye care info. When I called the customer service people had to find out themselves that a separate eye care cardwas to be mailed. There was no mention of this in MEGAs cover letter. Whats the point of having another card toput in ones wallet"

"Be careful when switching to this company. They start you out with a great rate and then once they have you - they start increasing the premium. A minimum coverage health policy for my daughter and myself started out at 265/month. Three years later we are now being charged 690/month for the identical coverage and same policy."

"Generally speaking they deny everything you claim and then after you fight back they begin to pay what they owe. If you fight long enough they generally pay everything but not without a long time consuming fight. "

"I have had a policy for over 20 years with a return of premium rider. I cancelled my Policy on August 8 2011 and they have refused to return my premiums as of this writing. I have filed complaints with the PA Insurance Commission and the TX Insurance Commission and am preparing a complaint to the US Attorneys Office. I should not have to wait 90 days or more to get my money since I have never made a claim nor will I since I am on Medicare for the past 3 years. I am seeking an attorney to file a class action suit against the company if the check isnt in the mail. PA Law may allow me to sue for triple damages. This is being checked into."

"Ridiculous rate increases which my state insurance commissioner indicated was due to a "closed block" of insureds as Mega-Life decided not to do business in our state any more. So, since they are not selling, the average age/liability of the insurer goes up (naturally) so that Mega-Life is justified in getting exorbitant rate increases improved. Basically, I was informed that they lock policies up - tell you "take it or leave it" and WAIT for you to drop out of coverage...because they totally want to eliminate your block of peer insured. WHAT A RIPOFF!"

"The monthly payments are through the roof and they cover almost nothing. They refused many valid claims because of insufficient information. I had the information faxed multiple times, but they "never receive" them. After one year, the already astronomical monthly payment increased by 50%."

"This company pays next to nothing on a complete physical.I pay nearly $400 per month for this insurance and my physical (female age 58) cost me out of pocket nearly $250. I am blessed to be healthy but they barely pay for any visit to the doctor, so I hardly ever go. There is no one year waiting for them to cover any pre-existing condition.... they will NEVER pay for anything related to pre-existing condition as I have had migrains in the past when employed in a high stress job and the carpel tunnel numbness in my hands. I carry insurance to cover me as not to lose my home should any major health event occurs. The sales person for this policy was not entirely honest about this insurance."

"I just found this site and the evaluation of Mega has to be a misprint, or completely false. I have paid for my families coverage for over 30 years, have used many different companies. To date Mega is with out question the worst. Way over priced when you add in the add ons, which you need to have any coverage. Quite a few hospitals/doctors not in their network. I believe the worst is the group of out right thieves that peddle this junk. I will be contacting my attorney to deal with the "old sleaze" that misrepresented this crap to my family. Do not walk but RUN from any self serving sloth that even mentions this company."

"The premium goes up every 6 months and is far more expensive than others. They try and get you to raise your deductible in order to lower your premium just a little. Then when the premium goes up 6 months later your back where you started but now with a much higher deductible."

"The premium monthly was higher than what was covered for one Dr. visit every 4 months for one child I had two childeren under coverage. For both of them to go to the Dr. in a 4 month period I had to pay one of the visits cash and a quarter of the other childs visit."

"Use participating physicians & laboratories and you will never fill out paperwork. All claims go to Mega from the providers. After Mega determines what the provider gets paid, then you will get a statement for the remaining balance to pay the providers. Then wait to receive the provider's bill. Very simple and I don't pay until approximately a month later. "

"Avoid this company at all costs. Do not get their basic plans (Health Care Advantage). The initial premium may be attractive but they will raise it at least once a year citing increased medical costs - but your benefits will stay the same. You have to pay the deductible for each illness and injury (max 3 times for individual, max 9 times per family). Benefits are only good for each injury/illness per period of confinement (6 months). So if you have to go back into the hospital for the same or something related to the first illness or injury within 6 months you won't have to pay the deductible but if they've paid the maximum benefit already the company will pay nothing except room and board. They have an "Accumulated Covered Expenses Waiver" that is a waste of money - they are deceptive as to what "covered expenses" mean - the say covered expenses are what your out-of-pocket expenses are not what is covered under the plan. Their 80/20 plan premiums are at least twice what other reputable companies charge with lower deductibles and out-of-pocket caps."
Commented on 2009-04-20 12:26:45 EST
"$515 per month premium. $5,000 deductible, per person, per event...not per year. So if your procedure costs $3,500, you pay 100%. If your next procedure costs $3,500, you pay 100%. If your wife has a procedure that costs $3,000, you pay 100%. Totally unrealistic program. We are BETTER OFF being uninsured!"

"BEWARE OF THIS INSURANCE COMPANY AND IF YOU DO GET IT - BE SURE TO READ THE FINE PRINT!! They bury limitations in their explanations. I purchased the wellness rider and when I went in for an annual exam with my OBGYN, they wouldn't cover a pap smear because I didn't wait a full year with their company. Also - they are horrible for routing child care - they pay nothing. You are better off paying cash at the Dr. Office than dealing with these people. Also - your delectable is per incident!! Not for the whole year, as customary in the business. Glad I have changed insurance carriers and don't have to deal with this company anymore!! Run!!"

"The insurance salesman made claims (promises) that were not apart of the policy. We were told pre-existing conditions were not a problem. Annuals tests and exams would be covered 100 percent. We were told out of network would be covered 50 percent. Any additional tests would be covered. None of these claims were true according to the policy we received. We have been hung out to dry. It seems the pick and choose which claims they want to pay and which ones they don't. If you are considering switching to Mega Life, do yourself and your family a favor; don't. "

I recently found out they lost a class action lawsuit for over 20 million because of deceptive business practices and lying to consumers and benefits so low it should not even be considered insurance. They also changed there name to continue to trick people their new name is Health Markets!! WARNING TO ALL IF THE COMPANY IS OUT OF TEXAS RUN AWAY!! THROW THE OUT OF YOUR HOUSE!"

"Every six months they raise my premium, or you have the option of raising deductable by a thousand$. $15 copay for doctor visits, you pay rest up to deductible. You see a specialist expect to pay dearly. Get a test or procedure done to save your life, YOU pay up to deductible. Small price to pay for some people, but once in 10 years at over $8000/year for premiums? Give us a break!"
Commented on 2009-02-26 06:13:34 EST
"Be careful I discovered that these policies are typically "limited benefit" policies. So, after your deductible, many things still are NEVER covered! And if you're agent is a real snake, he will leave out important riders so he/she can stick in high commission add ons that do nothing for you. Do yourself a favor and get a major medical policy like United Health Care. It will probably even be cheaper. Mine was!"

"We had this insurance company for one month before deciding to cancel due to the terrible coverage that we found in the explanation of benefits. It took us MONTHS to cancel! They would not allow us to cancel together, each person in the household had to call and cancel seperately. Then, they only canceled our health, and did not cancel our vision, life, accident, etc. So we continued to get charged even after they told us we had canceled everything. We eventually ended up having to call over 7 times to get it taken care of, over the span of 4 months. Terrible company, terrible customer service. Consumers be warned!"

"Following our termination of our COBRA insurance through BC/BS we had to find independent health insurance. A representative came out to our home and we viewed the policies with Mega Life. So we decided we would go ahead and complete the application and of course we were accepted, but with a LOT or Riders which increased the original quote over $100.00. We had not used the insurance until recently and my husband and myself both had to go to the doctor for medicene reviews. They of course did not cover lab work or a routine office visit. I contacted the Great Mega Life asking questions for up coming procedure for my husband and myself. I found that they do not cover pap smears, mammagrams, x-rays, colonoscopy, endoscopy or prostate screeing test (for my husband which will soon be 52. I asked the customer service representative why would that not be covered? She replied all test fall under the mandated co-pay which is $7500.00. So, if any of the above procedures are more than that then we will have to pay an additional deductible of $4,000.00 + 20%. And let me remind you as well that you have to pay the above cost for each procedure... The office visits I found out are 2 per quarter each for my husband and myself. And that is only for illness or injury. I explained to her that basically I am paying out $500.00 per month for no coverage. She said "oh no, if either of you are hospitalized you would have the same above coverage. Well ya know what? That sounds like BANKRUPTCY to me. Keep shopping for REAL insurance and RUN RUN RUN, if anyone contacts you about Mega Life and Health. Save your money!!! This is a RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Then there's the prescriptions which they tell you they cover and then don't. In just over 1 year I would've saved about close to 5,000 by paying for medical expenses out of pocket than having these clowns. The Amway/Quixtar of the health insurance field."

"The field rep. was very deceitful, made this policy sound comparable to my previous policy, but did not inform me that the deductible was per person, per incident, that anything pre-exiisting would be excluded and she set up the payments to be taken out of my account automatically without my permission, after I had explicitly told her I did not want any automatic deductions from my checking account, she took the number off my check for the initial payment and set it up anyway! My family of four spends over $5000/year to have this insurance and so far they have paid approximately NOTHING of our medical bills this year. "

"PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE CONSIDERING OR STAYING WITH THIS COMPANY: First of all, I worked as a medical claim processor for years as well as worked in a doctor's office. I am extremely fluent in insurance speak. I agree with all that said this company is a SCAM. RUN fast in the other direction-it would be less expensive and time consuming to not evn have insurance and to put away your monthly premium amount in a savings plan to keep aside for medical bills. I gave up my GREAT insurance because the agent (who suddenly wouldn't return my calls - ever again) gave me a great sales pitch and even though the premium was only a little less than the current insurance I had, the coverage sounded much much better. Since I was starting a new business and needed the extra money, I fell for it. OH MY! My policy said I had a $20 office visit co-pay. When I got a bill for the remainder of the office visit, I called the company (that is a huge problem too...the people on the other end of the phone-I cannot call them 'Customer Service' in any way, shape or form seem to be someone hired off the street for the day)and mentioned my co-pay plan, they said, "Oh yes, you pay the $20 co-pay plus whatever is left after the insurance has paid the doctor." First of all, that is not how a co-pay works, and second, they only paid the doctor $12 out of a $236 bill! So, after paying a $252 monthly premuium at the ripe old age of 34, they would only pay $12. That continued the next two times I went to the doctor over the 1.5 years I was on this plan. I spent countless hours trying to sort this out with this company, talking in circles with the incompetent kids that work the phones. I finally talked to a real insurance agent that deals with all of the companies and he knew all about MegaLife and told me to get out of it as quickly as possible because if a disaster happened, it could be financially catastrophic with this notorious company not paying anything. Again, I would say, RUN away as fast as you can. "

We were supposed to pay only $7,000.00 out of pocket, to date it's more like $30,000.00. Nobody working in customer service gives the same answer regarding coverage because like their agents, they don't understand it. They don't return calls from the customers or the physcians offices. They are complete liars who shuffle you from one customer service agent to the next in order to confuse and frustrate. They are masters of deception and going through this while you have a sick child is heartbreaking. Run the minute you hear their name. "I applied for health insurance (and prepaid over $500) with this company over two months ago. I still have no health insurance. Even though I fully disclosed a prior hospital visit, I was told it would be a 4-6 week wait to get the records; this after the original 4-6 week wait for the doctor's records. I asked for the process to be terminated and a refund processed. Of course, no policy no refund, two months later. What a scam. I wish I had known to check this website first. Beware new applicants, run the other way. "

"My wife use to work for a large advertising firm and when she left we had to get our own insurance. We were concerned about the out-of-pocket expensise, and how much we would have to pay out of pocket on things that are not being covered. We have had our policy with Mega for close to 2 years and we have yet to pay for anything other than the premium. I have 2 daughters and all their immunizations and doctor visits have been covered 100%. I am extremely satisfied with my health insurance. "

"they will deny anything they can not to pay a claim. Also NASE doesn't tell you that you NO LONGER need to be a member in order to have a policy with Mega Life. A savings of $10/month. If you don't need NASE services, there is no sense in spending the extra $120.00 per year!"

"Baffling organization without a single human being who knows the answer to your question. The worst black hole of customer service I have EVER encountered and I've dealt with some bad ones in my lifetime. This company makes Blue Cross Blue Shield look good. This company makes the DMV look good."

"They have small limits on every medical procedure! If you've got a big bill, get out your check book & start selling your assets!! You will pay most of it!!!"

"This company promotes itself as an affordable alternative for health insurance especially for the self employed. They have constantly increased my premium over the years. They suggest each time you drop the riders so you can offset the increase then as soon as allowable they increase you again and again always w/ a techno-lame excuse. I cant get insurance w/o a large group. I have rarely used this policy because of the max $5,000 deductible. The one time I did they tried not to pay the bill for the surgery. I suggest that folks stay away from this company based upon my experiences."

"They paid out about 30% of the bill. They are an absolute rip off. I am now stuck with thousands in unpaid medical bills I have no idea how to pay back. "

"I've been very pleased with my coverage with Mega Life and Health. When I take my children to the Dr there is no copay. We have also visited the ER a few times for injuries and all I've paid was $150. My old policy made me pay my deductible before they covered anything."

"I'm not an expert when it comes to insurance policies. However, my wife and I are satisfied with what we have, and she's used it a decent amount. We recently had a birth at home (with midwives) and Mega Life covered 80% no questions asked (80% is what they said they would cover). We know for a fact that other, more well-known insurance policies do not cover a home birth (we know this because our midwife told us). All in all, considering the birth and other visits my wife has made to the doctors, we are happy. I had my doubts because I've never heard of Mega Life prior to signing on and because I'm very skeptical when it comes to insurance, but I'm happy with what we have based on my wife's usage. They've covered exactly what they said they'd cover, which seems relatively standard or better to me."

"When calling the company for help, you will get a different answer from everyone you speak to. Nobody seems to know what is going on. These plans are "custom-designed" to make sure the company rarely pays for anything! The NASE is a joke - it does not provide group protection like the agents tell you - you will still get a rate increase after your first 12 months, like most insurance companies. In fact, a lot of insurance companies are part of a "group" but instead of a $10.00 or $40.00 a month membership fee, the membership is $3.00, offering the same benefits as the NASE. Do not buy into this scam!"

"I am a policy holder with Mega Life. I am also and insurance agent with another insurance company that offers long term care insurance as well as life insurance. I find it ironic that most insurance companies, in the opinion of the general public, knows very little about how insurance and insurance companies work, can deem all insurance agents and ins. companies Crooks, scams and pure liers. I personally am offended and am PROUD OF BEING AN INSURANCE AGENT. Get your facts straight."

"Beware..If you require several non-surgical medical specialists, Cardiologist, Internist, Nephrologist, Neurologist, Infectious Disease, Neo-Natalogist, or any expensive non-surgical specialist they pay almost zip. The reimbursement is made on a percentage of the standard hospital 2 bed is not 80/20 as for your surgeon. This is peanuts...can owe tens of thousands if your in medical trouble. They don tell you that...but it's buried in your policy. Policy goes up $600 to $700 per year...I keep it because I have a handicap child and can't replace it because of pre-existing conditions. Too expensive over the long haul."

"I have been on Mega's health plan for 5 years now. The plan that I am on covered every dollar for myself and my 4 year old daughter's claims this year. My $427 physical was paid 100 percent! Very reasonable rates...very cool!"

"Not only did I save money by using their approach of tailoring a policy for MY needs, I found their organization to be fast, curtious and friendly at all levels. They payed my claims quickly, and at levels more than I expected. After years of group insurance, they are a pleasant reminder of what a good company is all about."

"This company will do anything to avoid paying a claim. It researched way back into my history to dredge up a complaint of prior peri-menopausal heavy menstruation and used that to deny coverage for a D&C hysteoroscopy 14 months later when I had post-menopausal spotting. What a sham. My pre-existing condition was my womanhood, the fact that I have past through the natural stages of a woman's physical life. That was used against me. This is an outright case of discrimation. This company will pounce on anything in an attempt to avoid paying a legitimate claim. Avoid this company at all costs!!!! As soon as we can find something else, we will. "

"Compared to the "Blues" of the world that I've been stuck with through my employers, I am happy as a clam!!! I've had 3 major claims in the last two years and they've paid more than I thought they would. Better yet, no rate increases because of these claims. I've had about 5% rate increase and I can imagine it's because I'm now two years older than when I signed up. I am very satisfied."

"Deceptive practice to say the least. When I bought this policy the sales person told me once I reached the $5,000 deductible I would be covered 100%, on everything. Not the case. I've been paying for garbage for 5 years. Attorneys you can have my case."

"It was very easy to use. They paid more than I thought they would. The comparison between their monthly premium and the name brand HMO is $800/mo less for a family plan. I do not mind paying for some occasional things. Overall throughout the year, I came out $9,000 better off with MEGA LIFE than with the HMO I had prior. Thank you MEGA. Sincerely, A happy client"

"Its a rip off, all it is, is a discount health program, don't let their agents fool to think you actually have health insurance. I am currently (not for long though) insured through them, I need surgery, I can't get it because I can't afford to pay $9,500 out of my pocket. Therefore, I have to sit in pain and wait until my husbands new job insurance kicks in. Also, once an agent sells you the insurance, don't think you will ever talk to him again, even if you do, the agent will tell you they can't help you, you need to contact the company. If the selling agent is not "THE COMPANY" then who is????"

"They were supposed to cover 80% after deductible. In actuality it was less than 50% and most of that was in the form of discounts from the hospital. Everything seems to be not covered or coverage is so low it isn't realistic. Nothing but a high priced scam preying on self employed."

"It is a very bad insurance company. Their agents lie with regards to what kind of coverage you have and you don't really know until the time of paying your medical bills come. That is when you know what is cover and what is not. They told me I had prescription coverage and it turned out that it was only a discount through an online form (I can't buy medicine at any retail stores) and once you order the medicine it takes between 1 and 2 weeks to arrive. How stupid uh, specially when you need the medicine RIGHT AWAY. HORRIBLE COVERAGE, DO NOT USE MEGALIFE."

"Beware of the sales pitch from the independent representatives. This insurance is not what it appears to be. This company only pays what they feel are reasonable charges for services rendered and in many cases they have paid zero on several of my claims for routine medical services. I am very bewildered but can't change companies because of pre-existing conditions. Do not put yourself in my situation where you have no other options. "

I am a student and it was in excess of months before I got any kind of decision on my claim which was rejected because it was said that there was a preexisting condition. This insurance is BAD. They are a pain to work with and I had to fax them the same information countless times. "
