"After 33 years of paying my policy on time I am suddenly notified I need to pay almost 800 dollars now or my policy will be cancelled and the cash on value is zero"

"ReliaStar Life Insurance is the worst life insurance company I've ever had to deal with. Period. Their customer service is horrendous, and their claims handling even worse. To file a death claim, you'll have to call the parent company now Voya but you'll be lucky if they can help you since Reliastar seems to exist in its own backwater alternate universe. You might be transferred to a Reliastar number or you might have to call yourself and speak with a person in Texas, which is when thing get surreal. They will collect all the information to get a claim started, which they then have to SNAIL MAIL to MN, before that office will SNAIL MAIL you some claim forms to fill out. It's like this company has never heard of computers, or the internet, or email, or even a fax machine. Incompetence Or purposeful inefficiency designed to hold on to your money for as long as possible Read on... Claim paperwork might arrive by mail within the next month. I've had to file 2 death claims in the past 5 years, and their process has not improved a bit in that time. Fill out the forms, provide a certified copy of the death certificate, etc... all pretty straightforward. They do provide an overnight mailing address for the return of the claim package, but the rest of their process is so painfully slow that it really doesn't matter. Now you wait... and wait... For my mom, it was over 2 months from first call to receipt of a payment package - in the form of a checkbook. It's apparently impossible to get them to simply cut a check -- instead, they will force you into one of their checkingline-of-credit accounts, and force you to draw down the balance by writing out checks. Yet another ploy yo hang noto your money even longer. Add delays for theses checks to clear. Then, when the account falls below a certain amount, they will close out the account and send a check for the balance - maybe a month later if you're lucky. Absolutely ridiculous FOR GOD'S SAKE, if you're considering their life insurance, do your heirs a favor and DON'T If you already have a policy with them, then you have my condolences."

"It has been EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING to deal with this company every single time I have tried to find out any information about my account. My type of policy was only offered for a brief time and every time I try to get information, I am referred to several people and a committee has to meet to review my account, etc. It is very difficult to believe they don't know how to deal with my account or sometimes find it when this is what they do. I try not to be rude to the people who answer the phone, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. If my account did not have a free life insurance policy tied to it which they currently can't figure out, I would have switched to a different company years ago"

"Send bills late deliberately so that insurance can be cancelled for premiums not paid on time. Periodic request for an additional and higher premium payment.. Most unsatisfactory practices."

"I got a real nice email from them saying my new life insurance policy was approved and if I had any issues I could call them. I called them and asked if they could mail me a copy of my new policy and they refused."

"I just got a notice that the company is raising my rate 10% because its claim costs and expenses are higher than expected.Too bad for Reliastar. My view I have a contract with this company that provides a set amount of protection for a set period of time for a set amount of premium. Reliastar has chosen to breach that contract by changing the premium unilaterally. I'm looking for another insurer. Other insureds should too."

"This company has happily taken premium payments from my self and spouse every 3 months for more than 10 years. Now that we are nearing 50 years old they keep returning our payments. I called today to find out why this is a whole life policy not term and nobody can answer the question but they tell me I am in lapse and will be canceled unless I make payment by phone. Then they don't take credit cards. Who carries a checkbook to work with them? They are scammers. Let me pay 1000 a year for ten years then make up excuses to cancel as we are approaching the age that we might actually need the policy. DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THEM. "

"Poor customer service. We filed a claim on our deceased mother's contract and they have given us the run around for over 6 months and the claim is still not settled. When you call they put you on hold for 10 to 15 min. then you ask a question that they cannot answer so they put you on hold again for 10 min. They have lost claim forms given us wrong information and most recently sent a letter to our deceased mother. I will never ever do any financial business with this company after we get this claim settled."

"I borrowed 1000.00 from my policy.Every time that I send a payment to pay it offthey add it too the loan and charge me interest. I have been trying you get them to make the correction for years. How can I get the ins. co to make the correctios without hiring a lawer to do it?"

"About two years ago, I suffered a stroke and had to quit my job. ReliaStar and ING were the health insurance company my employer used. For the first year after I quit my job, they were pretty good about paying me. However, during this second year, they have become increasingly insistent that I apply for Social Security Disability, just so they can stop sending me payments. They first threatened and now have stopped my monthly payments. This was my only source of income. What can I do?"

"AM Best reduced its rating from A+ down to A in mid-2009. Also, ING (which owns ReliaStar) appears to be facing financial pressures that are leading it to sell off some (or perhaps all) of its life insurance business. This means that ReliaStar term life insurance policy will probably be sold to another carrier very soon. While I am very satisfied with my policy so far, this uncertainty concerns me and makes me definitely not willing to recommend this insurance company to my friends, family, etc."
