"I received a letter stating that we are short on the payment to our mortgage insurance. So, I called my mortgage company and informed them that we received a billing from SaFeco that we are short so my mortgage company did a conference with the Safeco agent to resolve the issue so my mortgage company sent the payment to Safeco. So, I was thinking that has been resolved after a month I found out that our policy got cancelled. So, I called my mortgage company and they said they sent a check. Here we are again doing conference with both companies dealing it for more than 2 hours just to make sure that everything are fine and the insurance will get reinstated. So, a billing specialist informed that it will take effect within 24 hours. Then I got a voicemail from them saying that my policy is still not reinstated so I called them to make sure that everything are okay so this other agent informed me that they will need to wait for the check that my mortgage company sent them in order for my policy to get reinstated so meaning it would take 10 days for the policy to be in effect now Im so irritated and so upset and the lady was telling me that if I want it to be in reinstated right away I have to pay on my own pocket, I told the lady why was the other agent said something about it instead of getting a different information every time. I have never heard of a company once you pay it will take 24 hours. This outrageous. They need to do a better training with their employees."

"make you suffer trying to communicate with them and figure out what is going on on their end and refuse to pay what your policy says it will.If a claim is being filed there has odviously been an accident of some kind these are not people who make it any less stressful in fact they make it more stressful"

"I've only filed one previous claim in my lifetime. I hidden wall water leak in my home which Safeco covered, however although they had stated they would cover utilities of running several drying machines 247 for a week, I could not get them to follow through with their promise. I've recently had the first summons in my life at 60 over the holiday. The liability claim was filed 2 months ago and initially the claims resolution specialist failed to scan in the documents I provided, then the company went on holiday, so had to deal with a situation alone by hiring my own attorney to defend me against an individual coming after my homes both insured by Safeco with false allegations. The response time and lack of communication has only added stress rather than any support. I've requested a copy of my policies and never even received those. An extremely frustrating and stressful process. I had Farmers for 15 or 20 years prior to my banking institution teaming with Liberty MutualSafeco at which time, I signed up with them. I am on my own without any backing on a very serious matter and extremely disappointed. After 2 months the litigation specialist asked for an additional week and now its been two and court questioning why a arbitor has not been returned calls nor communication to me or my attorney Unacceptable professionally and no security or support here."

"Absolutely the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with or heard of......the adjuster didn't even come look at the shower pan sent a water retosration company out, tore out the entire bathroom, then said they wouldn't pay."

"They are incredibly unhelpful, past the agent everyone in their loop is utterly incompetent, from the rental coverage department to the work shop to the people that do the filing process. A complete and utter trash service for when you would need to rely on an insurance company. They don't know the meaning of the words principal of thinks, integrity or honesty. I have never dealt with such a lazy bunch of people put together in one place. Utterly a bunch of fraudulent and extortionist group."

"I am unable to speak directly to a Safeco representative other than my agent. I have had problems renewing my vehicle registration because Safeco has failed to notify my state of my coverage with them."

"Claims adjusters very slow to respond and hard to communicate with. I took over a week for them to respond to email and phone calls. It took 10 months to settle a wind damage claim on our barn and 5 months to settle a freeze break pipe damage. The SAFECO estimators are ALWAYS way low in comparison to contractors that do the work. I was forced to go up the chain of command to get results and even then it was a constant battle. SAFECO is the last insurance company that I would ever do business with again. My advice would be to find another insurance carrier if you happen to be insured by SAFECO."

"The claims adjuster denied our claim for a broken water pipe from a freeze on Jan 6, 2017. Too long a detailed explanation needed for their reasoning. I advised the adjuster that if they refused our claim I intended to sue them. They then sent out an adjusterappraiser who said our claim was valid. There was a lot of mold as a result of the busted pipe that we had to request an additional review for that portion of the claim. The adjusters did not want to accept the mold claim. Then they finally told us to get an estimate. They assigned a new adjuster, the original adjust had a mailing address in PA and our claim was in Oregon. They denied our contractors bid and a new adjust was assigned from LA, Calif. After about 1.5 hours of discussion with our contractor, they approved only about 60% of what the contractor submitted. They increased the approved amount to about 70%. The adjuster would delay returning calls and emails until I finally got the email address of his supervisor and the Oregon state head of claims. After copying them on several emails we started to get better attention but the final work was not completed until June 13, 2017. The entire kitchenliving room flooring had to be replaced along with sub-floor insulation. Many of the kitchen cabinets had to be replaced for which they only paid for the counter-top replacement. Now that we have filed a claim, we cannot get a new insurer for two years without having our premium almost double. So we are stuck with Safeco for another 14 months before we can change carriers. Rest assured we will be changing carriers after our probation time is up. Amazing how Safeco brags about how good they are until you have a claim. I am 83 yo and have had several insurance claims over my lifetime. Windrain damage. Roof collapse from snow load. Burglarytheft. I have NEVER had such mistreatment and delays from any of the prior insurance companies like we have had from Safeco. Is it any wonder they come out on the bottom of the list. Too soon old, too late smart. But then you will never know how good or bad they are until you have a claim. Companies like Safeco love to collect premiums but HATE having to pay for legitimate claims. My advice is to really investigate before you select your insurance carrier even if your premium is a bit higher than the low bidder. BTW, I found out that my insurance agent gets an annual kickback of big bucks if he keeps his annual claims below a given limit. I have to ask who he is really working for That's another story for another time. I have all of our telephone calls recorded and every email or USPS correspondence to prove all of the above and more. I suggest that anyone filing a claim, meticulously record dates and times and item's discussed. Attorneys love to sue rogue insurance companies."

"To sum this up I pay this company roughly 2000 a year for auto and homeowners. I have had them for 2 years after having Allstate for over 30. I left Allstate after a quarel over rates. The thing is when I had Allstate the few times I needed them, they had my back. I have had a perfectly clean driving record for 11 years and I was rear ended by a ride share driver while they had fares in their car. The moral is Safeco has done NOTHING to help me settle this simple body damage claim. My experience is with a very young girl fresh out of college that is my adjuster. She works for Safeco and does nothing but talk and talk. She even managed to get all of the information wrong when it came to this accident and I had to procure all of the reports. I have gone far beyong what a reasonable person would do to make this as easy as possible for Safeco. When you have an insurance company where you do all the work, they pass you off to the ride shares company insurance and even though they have have a better adjuster then Safecos and yet are notoriously bad at paying claims, why spend the money on this charade of a company It's companies like this that make everybody rates go up because thats the reason people hire morally questionable attorneys. That is the only way you are going to get payment. I have a 1500 simple body damage claim and Safeco won't pay it. Imagine if someone in my car was hurt in a real acident, like say with big truck If Safeco wont handle a small body damage claim where I'm clearly not at fault, imagine if it was a big claim and say I was at fault After I get my car fixed, Safeco is gone, my independent agent is gone, I will file a complaint with my States Department of Insurance and I will probably go with State Farm, Farmers or Allstate again. Don't think for a minute that saving some pennies is worth it, go with a name that you can trust. As a footnote the rates when I got insurance with Safeco two years ago were low. When my first renewel came the rates jumped 24% and then this renewel they went up 9%. Thats with zero claims, accidents or tickets. Run from this company, they are a subsidiary of Liberty Mutual. As their commercial says, Maybe I picked the wrong insurance company. They got that right. You may think you have the best insurance company in the world until you need them. Then you find out that you are paying 1100 for insurance cards and nothing else. 900 for homeowners and heaven help you if need them for that. I CANNOT even begin explain how BAD this company is, don't even think about getting insurance with them. Me I was rear ended by somebody but nobody was hurt Safeco adjuster OMG thats horrible, do you have their insurance info Me Yes. Safeco OK, file a claim against their insurance. What What am I paying you for and why Thats the claims process through them.- A 24 year old girl reading from a script. Pretty Ridiculous but 100% true. Pay the extra money in premiums so you have peace of mind and not undue stress. You will have to do the all of the work when Safeco should be and in subrogation with the other insurance company. You pay for insurance to let them deal with stuff like this and insurance with Safeco doesn't work that way. Even their preferred bodyshop is in shock at how this has been handled. Look at some of Safecos reviews and complaints on the internet and make your own decision. I bet you come to the same conclusion. Eight reviews on here and they managed to eek out a whopping 1.6 stars with their one 5 star review claiming your agent is at fault. Isn't your agent an extension of this company The person you call first when you have to make a claim My agent is getting fired for even recommending this horible company. I AM IN SHOCK THAT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS NOT BEEN FILED AND WON AGAINST SAFECO INSURANCE"

"The agent that I've been working with knows little and communicates very little with others in the company. Have had 3 adjusters out. Have had to talk to upper managers because of poor service. Payment information confusing. Instead of a full payment for damages they make a low payment then pay contractors on the go. Estimates unrealistic. Never use this company."

"After 16 years of having car and home owners insurance I ended up using both in a 6 month period. They looked for every possible way to get out of paying. They looked for every loophole in the law. It was highly unprofessional and caused a great deal of stress to my family and me."

"Safeco treated us unfairly and refused to pay for all work necessary for my repairs even items that were necessary for code updates and that is not excluded in our policy. Adjuster was very dishonest and lied about repair items - saying they weren't covered by my policy - but he wouldn't show me where in my policy it said they were not covered. Safeco insisted on sending out one of their Network contractors. I didn't know "their" contractor and didn't feel comfortable using them. They will do anything to avoid paying for all necessary repairs. I do not recommend Safeco and currently looking for new insurer. They will lie and do anything not to pay a claim."

"The car insurance agents are great One phone call and everything is handled professionally. The Homeowners insurance agents are terrible They don't respond to phone calls or emails and want any replacement items as cheap as can be Worst experience I've ever been through"

"Most recently, we had 2 interactions with Safeco that were disappointing. We rented an RV and were told that by state law our insurance had to cover our rental since we had auto insurance. When we called to verify, Safeco said they do not and their official policy is to advise their customers to take the insurance offered at the rental company. I'm still uncertain if Safeco is trying to get out of taking responsibility or the rental company advised us incorrectly about the law of our state. I am leaning towards Safeco trying to not do what's right. We ended up purchasing supplemental insurance.>>Our second recent interaction was a collision. My husband was struck by another driver from behind on an off ramp. We were shocked to find out we couldn't get a rental car because our policy didn't provide for it. We have full coverage They did not handle our claim in a timely matter - we are 2 weeks, going on 3 from the accident and our car is still not repaired because they didn't handle things well and we ultimately ended up dealing directly with the other company's insurance. Thank goodness the other driver was insured If Safeco doesn't take care of us who actually pay them, how will they take care of someone if we actually caused an accident? I shudder to think of it. Not ok for the premiums we pay.>>On the home side, we had a claim a couple of years ago and our adjuster was decent and one of the repair companies we dealt with a partner to Safeco did a great job. We had a sink overflow so we had a loss mitigation company out first. They were professional and fabulous. One of the companies kind of the general contractor that Safeco uses was rude and bad. And we had to have carpet in 3 rooms replaced. Safeco refused to replace carpet in a small closet because there were different flooring types separating the main room and the closet. We have a master bath between the bedroom and the closet. That to me was nuts. I wanted that carpet to match the carpet in the rest of the rooms as it had previously. >>At times it has felt Safeco did ok by us and sometimes it feels like they really have not. The rubber meets the road in a claim and right now from us they are getting two thumbs down and we are switching companies. It's a shame because we've been with Liberty Mutual first for about 16 years and then Safeco for about the last 5 because we had a friend selling insurance and it's a Liberty company. We no longer trust Liberty Mutual either through these experiences and are moving on to another company altogether."

"Very high rates...they continuously go up. With a renewal they removed the money saving benefits I had with them for no accidents, low mileage and paperless billing...which I had on for year with other renewals just for more money. I wasn't notified of these changes until I tried to file a claim. When I tried to cancel, they argued and repeated incorrect information to throw me off turn out they never really cancelled me as I asked and are now bullying me for paying them."

"I had them for home and auto my home owners insurance went up year after year for 3 years. It started out at 1100.00 and by the 3rd year it was 1600.00. I never had a claim for the home or the auto. I found a new insurance company. "

"I went with Safeco based on the lower premiums. I have Home Auto and Umbrella with them. Filed a claim 4 days ago and have not heard from anybody?? The rep I reported the claim to promised a 24-48 hr turn around. Going on 80 hours and into the weekend with no expected contact. Advice to Safeco set expectations and hold yourself to these. "

"I had coverage for my home with safeco several years and just filed a claim. Safeco ajuster did everything in his power to come up with an excuse why the claim could would not be paid. states preexisting leak. claims the roof damage happen sometime ago per his research. if you ask me...this is the bigest rip off company that i have everseen or dealt with. "I would say this is a high rating considering the crap they have pulled. I told them when I got my renters insurance that I would not be living there for more than a year so I did not want the policy to continue after a year. They had me set up a ONE TIME deduction from my bank to pay the insurance in full. The contract said they would notify me if they would be deducting again which shouldnt happen since I set up a ONE TIME withdrawal well sure enough its been over a year and they deducted the full insurance amount for another year. I contacted them and argued with them and they said they would refund me- that was a month ago.... I emailed them an angry email asking why I still hadnt been refunded. I got a lovely email stating that I had been refunded and it could take 7-9 business days... yeah well its been a month so that is a fat lie. I am so angry with this company. They also said they mailed me a notice stating the amount would be deducted from my account- they mailed it to the place where I specifically told them I would not be living after a year I gave them my phone number and email address so that they would know how to notify me. This is a long review but I am seriously angry and would hate for anyone else to have to deal with their run around and all their crap."

"Disgusted and not able to pay the new premium from this company. Been with SAFECO for nine years and never had a claim. My house payment is going up 125.00 a month for additional insurance they have put on my policy. The house is worth 139000.00 and would be lucky to get that for it. 2200 square ft in house. they have placed replacement value up to 28800000 plus several other increases in policy resulting in 125.00 a month more added to my monthly payment. This is not acceptable to me and will have to look elsewhere for more affordable monthly payments. Amazing Home values have lowered and insurance goes up. Also where I live property taxes have gone up two years ago but house values have not. Everything has gone up in price including food and as I am elderly I have the same amount of money and it's not keeping up with inflation. In other words It makes me wonder how I will survive or if I will be able to survive."

"This is the worst BY FAR insurance company I have ever been this dissatisfied with. They had our address incorrect for months and then said to me "didn't you find it odd that you weren't getting anything from us?" I have a life and dont ever think "hmm when was the last time I got anything in the mail from my insurance company?" Don't blame your mistake on us Their customer service is horrendous and their attitudes DEFINITELY need major adjusting We will never renew any policy with safeco ever again. They will take your money automatically and absolutely refuse to give it back at all and if your lucky enough to get it back it's on their terms instead of the same manner they took it automatically immediately and in full. Worst service ever by leaps and bounds Just terrible."

"I was rear ended on Hwy 95 and a company van hit me. The driver admitted looking down at the floorboard and accelerated into me going 65 MPH. HIs insurance company is contesting their drivers culpability and I haven't seen my deductible in six months. Safeco says it is in arbitration and I will not get my money until they get theirs. I have to call them. When asked why they do not keep me informed I was told they have too many customers to do so. Very rude when you finally find the persons involved with the claim. At one point Safeco suggested I the customer contact the other company to move the negotiations forward. Very poor customer servide from Safeco."

"I found Safeco to have competitive rates and an extremely benefit rich policy. I chose accident forgiveness vanishing deductible and several other "bells and whistles" that my prior company didn't have. When I had a small claim they were right on the spot taking care of it just as I would hope they would. I love Safeco and would definitely recommend them to friends and family."

"Safeco loves to deny claims even when other homeowners' insurances are paying out. They will find any excuse they can to deny your claim and then will use faulty information to attempt to drop coverage and leave you in the lurch. At this point we're stuck with them until we can afford to re-roof our cedar-shingled roof but once we've done that we'll switch insurances and never look back. Years ago I chose Safeco because they were the more affordable option and sounded good. Now I know they're affordable because they do everything they can to avoid making payments."

"I had a deer jump out in front of my car which crushed the hood and grille and pushed it in about 12 inches. Safeco was my insurance company. The Safeco representative said it was totaled and was emphatic that it COULDN'T be repaired. Yes yes it could have been repaired because I've had a very similar accident repaired and I spent 3 years in auto mechanics. The reason he said that is because the repairs would have been above 5000 and instead of shelling out money to fix my car you know the reason I pay money monthly to my auto insurance they wanted to screw me so they said it couldn't be fixed. The Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds values for my vehicle were around 5000. Safeco said they dont use those figures of course not why would they use recognized values they said they pay street value. I found 6 vehicles like mine on Autotrader IN MY AREA they were all whiney about that too and none were selling for less than 6000. Safeco kept insisting that this wasnt street value and kept offering me 2000 for my car. So they will ignore any evidence you have as to the value of your vehicle and insist that it is worth far less because hey we excel at screwing our customers. I said I was going to talk to an attorney which I did. None wanted anything to do with the case because it wasnt an auto accident where I was injured. If any attorneys are reading this could you please specialize in suing auto insurance companies in this niche. Anyway I got screwed by Safeco and after receiving the money immediately switched insurance companies. The whole experience made me furious. I would be willing to pay lots more for auto insurance at another company than to go with Safeco because when you need them theyre just going to screw you. How exactly do you replace your 6000 car with 2000 ??? Stay far away from this company."

They have never paid a claim ever.ever ever and never will. they are a scam masquerading as a n insurance company.All the money we've paid them over55 years and they still wont pay for anything. "Safeco has the most inept adjusters I have ever had to deal with. They DO NO accident investigation on their own. They sit back and wait for you to do ALL the leg work for them provide all the paperwork police reports pictures etc. ask for a 30-day wait period then deny your claim. Their adjusters give insurance a bad name. The claims adjusters in Los Angeles CA are incompetent lazy and professional liars. I also think this feedback will never be distributed because it reveals the true nature of this company. I hope this helps you to avoid Safeco insurance."

"Had the insurance for just under 3 years with no claims or issues. One day an insurance drives up to the house and tells me that he was hired by SAFECO to inspect the property. We have a newer property that is properly maintained and the inspector immediately points out all types of silly "risk" factors the property has. I knew that something was up 4 weeks later we were notified that our insurance policy is cancelled. Upon some research I find that this is a common practice among certain insurance companies. "

"We had storm damage to our house mostly the roof. We called a contractor to give us an estimate he recommended we contact our insurance company because there was more damage than the obvious missing shingles. Fast forward two weeks ... Safeco calls to tell us that our damages were less than the 2K deductible on our policy. The NEXT DAY we get a renewal notice in the mail and they've increased our premium by OVER 50%. We've had home auto and rental property insured with them for 3 years had never filed a single claim and the company didn't pay a DIME on the new claim. On closer examination we also find that they cut corners on the repair estimate e.g. pricing a low-quality shingle instead of the one currently on our roof so it would come in under our deductible. Second contractor says it's ridiculous that they aren't replacing the whole roof. Get the feeling that I'm going to be fighting them for a while ... and you'd better believe we'll be switching carriers."

"Safeco did not provide me any information about a possibility of reducing my deductible after someone hit my car in a parkinglot. I only learned about it from the bodyshop I took my car into. I've promplty cancelled my insurance with Safeco and can't recommend it to anybody. "

"Our daughter had an accident with one of our vehicles. When we initially tried calling our agent we were told she had retired. We weren't even notified of this Safeco adjusters were very slow to look at the car. Then an estimate was obtained and parts were ordered. More damage was found by the body shop and another adjuster came out. It turns out the first adjuster had never looked under the hood of the vehicle where significantly more damage was found. Then the vehicle was totaled. Meanwhile precious car rental days were passing. The claim's agent was not prompt to respond to calls and emails. She became really attentive when she mentioned that someone might be contacting us regarding her job performance. She asked if there would be any reason why we couldn't give her a '10'. Please My daughter did not renew with Safeco when she got her new car. Wise decision. They don't care. They let the customer do a lot of their work. They drag their feet with processing claims. Would NOT recommend"

"I live in the desert southwest. Sand damage is part of the program. Two prior claims for sand damage were handled well from start to finish by SAFCOmy insurance company for the last seven years. A recent claim was bungled from start to finish. My car had the same damage as the first two claims but was denied. These people are theives-their employees suck-a dose of social media will do them good. "

"They do not look out for you and they do not follow the policy. The policy has to many loop holes for there benefit and they get to assume if it were vandalized or ware and tear in a vandalism case. Of Coarse they mark everything as where and tear. There prices they use are not market prices they are way below any other insurance. They gave me 134.00 for a wooden door that cost 200.00 in lowes and home depot. This insurance is ridiculous. Statefarm is one of the better ones. I would recommend them to anyone."

"I wish I had researched this company before choosing them as a carrier. In trying to file a claim I was given inconsistent and wrong information by numerous company employees that could have cost me thousands of dollars. I was ignored and treated rudely while trying to deal with an accident in which I was not at fault and was injured. I received no compensation from them and they refused to help me track down the other motorist even though I had his license plate number. On top of all of this the customer service and claims reps were laughably rude and unprofessional. I would have taken legal action against them if I had any energy left for this company."

When we finally were able to cancel and find other insurance we found a rate that was over 50% cheaper than Safeco for the same amount of coverage. We cancelled within a timely manner and were assured they would not deduct any more funds from our checking. "Safeco "senior claims adjuster" has poor communication skills takes an average of two full business days to return an email and is unwilling to discuss things merely saying "if you do not agree you may invoke your right to an appraisal hearing". The offer she gave me is below the market value of my vehicle by about 10 percentage points low but not grossly so. They were reasonable and fair about providing me with a rental car. Overall the company is so-so but could have earned a "good" rating from me if only their adjuster would have communicated in a timely and professional and more diplomatic manner. I am not ready to switch insurers yet but will surely keep my eyes and ears open."

"Cancelled my policy due to the extreme policy rates. Always paid my insurance monthly paying for the month in advance. Safeco is charging me almost 300 for cancelling my policy stating that it is the portion that i owe for the part of the month they covered me. I paid for my insurance at the beginning of the month and i cancelled on the 7th of the month my monthly wasnt but 500. This makes no sense to me they dont return phone calls they refuse to explain the charges and they send me to a billing agency after only 15 days. this is the worst insurance company in the universe. "Claims handling was horrible. Almost a month until they "started" on my claim. The ONLY phone call I got from my agent was when they wanted to schedule their own contractor to come do the estimate. When they realized that their contractor was not going to get the job to restore the home because we have our own they NEVER called or responded to a single email. Not once. They did not drive the claims process even slightly. It was all us calling them all the time for status update informationetc. If I have a time limit on when I have to provide them with information so should they have the same. "Over a period of 5 years we filed claims for three incidents of hail damage. The 3 neighbors on all sides of me filed claims at same time. Two of them had their roofs replace twice one had his roof replaced once. Safeco refused to honor our claim even after we had three roofing companies and a home inspector to confirm roof damage. If you do your car will be returned to you with filth on it that wasnt there when the car was dropped off.If your car is totaled and you have rental coverage make sure SAFECO pays for your rental for the entire time it takes SAFECO to decide to total your car and send you a check for the car even if it takes more days than you have rental coverage for. SAFECO will drag their feet on the settlement and then try to stick you with the cost of the rental for the days beyond which you had rental coverage. "I have a rental that was robbed and my AC unit was taken for the copper. Safco said my rental has been vacant too long. It had been with two property managers- I went to another one because my first one wasnt getting it rented. It was empty for 3.5 months. It was being shown and my son was caring for the yard so we did not abandon it.. No where in my policy can I find a clause thay says theft is not covered. They say fire and pipes breaking are. Ive carried insurance for over 40 years. I am with Safeco and we got creamed by a deer. Our car was totaled. "My car had to be towed to the dealer. I called Safeco. Representatives were busy. The wait was 4-7 min. I had the choice of hanging on the phone or leaving my number for a call-back. I chose to leave my number. They called me back in 4 min. I was on the phone about 2 min. My car was picked up and on the way to the dealer within 20-30 min. "They cancelled out landlord policy stating we are located in a brush area. They did not inspect the property or area of the home prior to them deciding that it was unacceptable. The home has never had any damage from a fire or any other peril. It has a tile roof and stucco exterior the majority of the studs are steel beams down to the bedrock. And most importantly there is not brush within 300ft of the home- way more then the acceptable 150 ft they require for homes in a brush zone. When I spoke to a represenative at Safeco they told me that there was nothing they can do which really upset me. When I told them they should at least try before "throwing in the towel" he replied with "WOW" I did not appreciate how I was spoken to nor would I refer any friends or family to Safeco as I do not want them to be treated so poorly or unjust!"

"got quotes from several roofer in area for replacing roof from hail damage and they all come in within a couple hundred dollors of each other. Sacfeco does, t want to pay any of them. HOWEVER, we recently had to take off our renters because we purchased a home. We were quoted LESS than what we were previously paying. We thought this was amazing. "They were very easy to work with when I was in an automobile accident. I was able to take the vehicle to an adjuster and get my rental car the same day, within a few hours. It would have been even faster but I chose to go back to work and attend some meetings before dropping off my car and getting the rental. "The marina where my boat lives caught fire and was destroyed.SAFECO wrote me a policy insuring my hull for $4000 and my motor for $11,000, when I filed my claim, they had no problem with the hull, but only wants to pay $3320 for the motor. Why insure the motor for $11,000 when they estimate the actual cash value for $3320.The adjuster said he could`nt even get someone to take pitures of the damage. "When I moved to Utah, they jacked up my rates by almost 80percent from my previous policy in California. Cal has rules protecting the consumer, Utah protects corporations. "Initial payments are made using original value and a deductible for age. Only after purchasing new/replacement items is the replacement cost reimbursed, making it difficult to get things replaced as you need money to buy them. The company does not initially question cost, but also does not tell you to keep items for them to come and evaluate. My recommendation is to take lots and lots of pictures prior to any need for a claim and also when anything is damaged to get lots and lots of pictures to back up your claim of loss. The insurance did not like out quote to replace carpeting after our septic backed up into the basement. They sent in their rep who actually told them that our quote was legitimate and that stairs needed to be included as all of a piece. Insurance company denied that coverage - stairs were not covered for reparpeting even though they had been contaminated and even though they were connected in a way that you could not replace the floor without the stairs."

"Serveral houses in my area had hail damage last year and some this year. I have heavy wood shakes but they have split. "i had an accident with a SAFECO policyholder where their insured hit me and my vehicle overturned. The accident reports confirms that the SAFECO driver was at fault and was ticketed. SAFECO denied the claim because none of the witnesses saw what happened. I am not giving up and will fight this company with all I have. "

"I have a family member who is an insurence agent and got my car insurence from them, i was hit from behind by a speeding pizza delivery guy and got 80% of the blame basically because I was 16 and the facts from the scene and what I had to say about it didnt matter. He also got me renters insurance with them, my house gotten broken into over Christmas and now here it is 6 months later and they still havent come to a settlement and say that I have not given them all the "receipts" which I handed to the investigator after we went over everything and he took pictures of it."

"We just purchased a house three weeks ago and used Safeco as our homeowners insurance. We have not moved into the home yet because we are painting and adding new carpet. Without any notice, Safeco dropped our homeowners insurance stating the home is uninhabital even though all fixtures are working and in place. When we called to ask them why the insurance was cancelled they told us we could be reinstated if we took pictures and sent it to them. Forget it - why would we deal with a company that will cancel a policy without notification and with no merit to the reason of cancellation?"

"I had a policy with this company for over 20+ years. Serveral vehicleswere incsured over this period of time. my starting premium was 2300.00 + dolloars over aperiod of years due to my husband driving a truck an sons who were categorized at high risk. Over that period of time less than 5 claims filed, 2 were due to hail damage, 1 due to a incident in a hospital garage incident, 1 my adult son who had permission to drive my vehicle had accident on a wet road. i had the policy for over 20+ years and Safeco cancelled without talking to me, or validating that information had been recieved by me to comply with theie requests. When I contacted the company it was communiated to me that if you don't follow their rules even though, they don't verify that you have recieved the communication from them they cancel. I could not begin to estimate the premiums sice tag pthat I that i have paid over the years! But I gurantee you I could now be deiving a paid for LEXUS and a JAGUAR, and have enough money to retire on!"

"I'm sad and irritated. I have had Safeco Auto for 32 years...homeowners for 26 years. As life happens, my husband has had two incidents in the last two years; one was a 50%/50% fender bender in the dentist parking lot (no final money paid by Safeco), and the other was when someone hit our truck that was parked on the street downtown. At first they questioned if it was truly a hit and run...then the adjuster confirmed that it had to be, by the damage to the truck. Well, the same day we get the claim check in the mail, we get a letter stating they won't be renewing us. So, after 32 years of premiums (fairly high ones as we have two sons). Whatever! We will be getting our homeowners from another company as well. "

"I started having a roof leak. Three separate roofers told me I had hail damage (from last spring) and that the roof was in bad shape. The house/roof was only 10 years old. SAFECO said the roof was damaged due to normal wear and tear, and would not pay. I had to spend $3,250 out of pocket for a new roof. I have been with them 10 years (car and home) and will be leaving after this outrage."

"I was hit by a driver insured by Safeco. I thought that I could handle it directly with them, rather than going through my own insurance. I was wrong! Safeco has been terrible! The latest issue goes like this: They are totaling my car, but I'm haven't signed over the title because I don't like their estimate. The Safeco gal gave me some vague threats that they would abandon my vehicle at the salvage yard. The next thing I know, they tow it to my apartment complex and park it away from my apartment. They didn't even tell me that they were moving it from the salvage yard. I only saw it because I was out walking my dog! "

"My home flooded from a broken pipe on the second floor. Over half our 1700sf home was damaged: living room, kitchen, dining room, family room, entry way, and mudroom. We needed all new flooring, walls, ceilings, cabinets, and light fixtures. Safeco's initial estimate was only $25k; only a fraction of what the private contractors estimated (around $70k). Safeco becomes your enemy, not your advocate when you have a large claim. They use deceptive practices to try to get out of paying for what is rightfully yours. Flee from Safeco. They used to be a good company but over the past few years they have become one of the worst. This does not just come from me and and my experience. There are many others; insureds, and general contractors, who say the same thing."

"I don't know what these other people are talking about except the factor that some people just can't be pleased. I have never had a problem with Safeco. Everytime that I have had to call customer service, the customer service person answered my questions quickly and professionally. I had a claim after the recent hurrican in Houston and Safeco handled my claim very satisfactorily. Are they the cheapest they aren't. However the old saying " you get what you pay for" is very true. I don't look for cheap in an insurance company, I look for service and reputation. I heard nightmares from some of my neighbors after the storm her but the people that had Safeco were pleased. "The worst. We had a water main break in front of our house by a large truck turning around in our driveway right by the meter. They didn't cover it, and acted like I was commiting fraud. They even wanted a letter of 'explanation' threatening to blacklist us. I should have gotten a lawyer, but could ill afford that after paying around $3000.00 in repairs. Then they acted surprised when we dumped them. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from Safeco. All smiles taking your money, all belligerent when you have a claim."

"SAFECO instantly sent us a settlement check for 30% of the claim, then tortured us for most of a year after we provided prompt documentation of the loss. They ended up paying 95% of the claim but put us through hell to get it. If we ever are involved in any accident/loss/claim where SAFECO is the insurer, we would just give it to a lawyer and happily pay him/her 1/3 for the incredible aggravation due to SAFECO's business model. "Safeco, told me I could take my vehicle to anyone I wanted to repair it and then tried not to pay the estimate saying thier perferred shop could have done it for the price thier Safeco estimator wrote. Thier estiamte was a joke and involve blending in paint and taping. My shop said you need to paint the entire panel etc."

"The appraisers are "independent contractors" who make a point of denying any claims. I recently lost a roof and had interior damage due to a storm. Three appraisers said they could see "no storm damage" and SAFECO paid me $500 for a $10000 damage cost. My agent appealed the decision and he, too, was turned down...their attitude was abrasive."

"We've been Safeco customers for over a decade. The first claim (stolen car) took forever and they wouldn't return calls. Finally a check for $300 arrived for the stolen car. When the car was found, Safeco finally called to say it was their car. But no, I hadn't cashed the check! This year we files a claim for a leaking pipe in our condo shower. The fine print said they didn't cover slow leaks. Not much can go wrong with a condo besides leaks. They are terrible. "

"We just submitted a homeowner's claim with SAFECO and were initially satisfied with the claim service, inspectors and customer service. Today, we received our claim check for the claim made in December; however, a surprise to us was that we also recieved a notice of cancellation (with the documented reason of cancellation being due to our claim). Now, we have to go through and make more deposits, find insurance, and all of that fun stuff (all over again). That's just great that SAFECO insurance cancelled us just for making a claim (btw - we've never made a claim with any insurance company EVER)."

"I filed a claim with SAFECO for hail damage in November of 2008. The adjuster said the roof need to be replaced. SAFECO took the total the adjuster came up with and then subtracted $4,400 from it for a roof claim they paid five years ago. There have been 160 thunderstorms in the county I live and 60+ of them had hail since the 2003 claim and repairs, yet they don't want to pay the full amount to replace my roof now. "I was in an accident with a driver that was insured by Safeco, She ran a red light T-bone my car. After talking to the safeco agent about claims he said the case was under "Investigation because of conflicting stories‣ even with the police report stating the driver ran the red light, the driver even confesses to running the light. Ended up hiring a lawyer, Safeco continues to give me the run around. It’s been over a year my totaled car is still sitting in my driveway and Im still paying off my medical bills from the accident. The car is obviously totaled, adjuster even said that when he came by, well pay me for a replacement, months later they say they’ll repair it, gave me an estimate that shows repairs for the right side when the car was hit on the left, and left out a major parts of the repair. "My car was rear-ended the person who hit me claimed total fault. The Adjuster NEVER showed up to do a supplemental estimate, asked the repair shop to do it. First the repairshop refused said it was the Adjuster's responsibility, and after two weeks wait repairshop finally does the supplement. "Safeco denied us from full roof replacement on our house after the Sep 08 hurricanes. Citing obvious damage on entire roof, they only agreed to reroof the front. Adjuster even suggested re-using shingles from the front to repair the rear! After a month of speaking to differnt reps, I still had no luck. to beat that, I cannot get my shingles matched or find a contractor that would do a partial repair. it is now Jan 09 and I still have a tarp on my roof. When we didn't agree with their offer, the SAFECO rep. became hateful and told me that she was closing the case and that we could file with our own insurance because that was all she was offering. I filed on september 16. on the 17 i had a man call me from safeco telling me that i was insured and my insurance would cover all damages due to the wreck. well today (september 24 i get a call from safeco. the lady records me and asks me about the damages. as soon as she is dont she turns off the recording and tells me that my insurance policy was cancelled due to late payment. MY PAYMENT ISNT DUE YET! I asked them when my policy was cancelled and they tried telling me on september 12. but thats a load of bullpoo because on september 16 that man from safeco told me i was insured! They cancelled my policy so they wouldnt have to cover the damages. Then the lady on the phone was being so rude. She called me a little rich b**** and told me to go pay for the truck myself. She told me she didnt have to listen to a spoiled brat like me. I was sooooo mad. so i started saying something to her and she told me she wasnt going to hear it and hung up on me!!! but thats ok.. i just got off the phone with my lawyer. YAY. we're taking em to court! haha. their screwed! Dont ever use SAFECO. They are a scam and all they want is money. they arent there to help anyone. Dont Use Them!"

"Don't actually have insurance with Safeco, but was involved in an accident with one of their insured's who was 100% at fault, they accepted liablity but they sure don't want to pay what it is going to cost to fix my car, I have been fighting with them for a month now, they are wanting to give me half of what the body shop wants for repairs, they refuse to budge, insist that I try one of their preferred shops which is an hour drive for me, real convenient, the one I want to go to is 15 minutes away but it is not a preferred shop. Unfortunately my brother has insurance with safeco and they actually paid out on a claim where he was not at fault, he was parked in a parking space with a 4x4, came out of the store walked around behind his truck got in, started the truck and put it in reverse and rolled slightly back and hit something, he thought what the heck, got out and some old man in a little car had pulled crossways behind his truck and parked, my young daughter was with him and could not believe what happened, unreal that they would pay out. Stay clear of Safeco."

"At the time of getting the insurance quote, u would be told an impressive amount better than Farmers or Gyeco So u would take the offer, but later after 3 months they again withdraw money from your account saying all sorts of reasons... never belive them.. "

"I have been with Safeco since I was 16 for auto insurance. I have had two claims with in a 15 year time period. Both claims were taken care of quickly and very well. Customer service and the adjusters were great. I have absolutely to complaints. "

"Over the past year my auto insurance costs have gone up $100 a month due to all sorts of supposed state based charges and yet every website that I use for an auto insurance quote is significantly lower. I've not personally had an issue w/ Safeco's service but my dad did last year and almost had his license suspended as a result. I'm sad to leave an insurance company after 9 years of using them, but they aren't worth the extra cost and I'm afraid of encountering a problem similiar to the one my dad experienced. "

"A few years ago we added two teenagers to our auto policies. We knew that having teenagers (one girl, one boy) meant higher rates and we were prepared to pay higher rates. The teenagers are now in their early 20's so we started shopping around. Both kids had minor accidents. Found out we can get better coverage for about 1/3 of the price Safeco charges even with two young adults with accidents. Didn't waste anytime switching. We also had our boat insured through Safeco. We cancelled that policy within days of cancelling the auto policies. It has been 3 weeks and we are still waiting for the refund check."

"It appears truth does not equal justice, as proven by the outcome of my auto claim with Safeco. Another driver ran a red light, causing our accident, and somehow they are deeming me 50% liable (the other insured's insurance is--surprise--safeco, as well), though I was driving the speed limit and avoided the accident at all costs. "Wood floors flooded. They wanted to patch a $6,000 floor that was 5 years old. Refused to acknowledge hail damage to roof when all neighboring houses had damage. had to get 2 field assessors and 3 vendor proposals before they would approve flooring. I had replacement cost policies and they made me pay partial up front and get a remimbursement. Will change companies as soon as I can."

"Please make sure you keep all receipts before starting with them because it is a hassle on a claim with them if you don't. I had pictures of all my items because I never liked holding on to receipts and when I started my policy I informed them of that upfront. They told me to take pictures of everything and thats what I did. I ended up having to file a claim and they keep asking for receipts even though I provided all the pictures to prove i owned or had the items. They have made me feel helpless throughout this experience as if I'm the suspect instead of the victim of the crime. The was home invasions have gone up this year alone should let them see its not something anyone can really avoid happenening."

"in the process of negotiating a uim injury claim under my policy due to a combination burst/compression fracture at l1. accident was a year and a half ago. we have had to involve the washington state insurance commissioners office 2 times to get safeco to respond to us. they deny getting reports from care providers that we have documentation that they infact havereceived these reports. they have stated that my pain level is a 1 as per my provider when infact the report shows non vigerous daily is a 1-2 and walking, yard work, ect. is a 3-4. they out right lie, devalue my physical state, wont respond to any request for documentation on there part. i have been with safeco for over 23 years, have never had a claim with them. this accidend was not my fault the other driver was cited. we have cancelled our policy with them and will never go back!!!!!! they are all about saving there money instead of taking care of there insured and doing whats right!!!!!!"

"After paying $1000s each year and finally placing an honest claim for simply 100s to help for wind damage. Yes, they paid but sent a amateur rep out who made false reports about our house condition and then when I called to correct it they did not correct it but sent me a demanding letter threatening to increase my insurance or drop us. "My home was located right in the path of hurricane RITA in Orange county Texas.My travel trailer was destroyed as a result of the hurricane. I called SAFCO, my insurance company, as soon as I was allowed to return to my home.Within two days a adjuster had looked at the trailer and within a week the trailer was picked up and I had a check.Safeco gave me fare market value for the trailer.Post hurrican Rita was a very bad time for all of us on the Gulf Coast and it was very pleasent to to have a no hassel insurance company which is more than I can say for my homeowners insurance, but that is another story."

"I am no longer insured with Safeco and I would have posted this sooner if I had run across this website before now. In 8/2006 I had an accident which was my fault and caused about $8k damage to my car and probably more to the other person's car. I dropped my car off at a shop the same day as the accident and rented a car. The cost for the rental car was covered under my policy and I had about 30 days' worth of coverage. No problem, right? It couldn't possibly take 30 days to repair my car. It took more than 30 days because of Safeco's delays. As the shop began taking my car apart more damage was found. This is very common and it is usually handled by the shop faxing a supplemental estimate to the damage adjuster who approves the revised estimate. (I am in the insurance business and know the process very well.) Instead of approving the repairs via fax, Safeco insisted on sending a live person to the shop to personally inspect the new-found damage. This person would get to the shop several days after being advised of the new damage. These delays caused my rental car coverage to expire which caused me to have to pay for my own rental car. When I confronted the adjuster about this, he said I shouldn't have gotten a rental car so soon. I guess I was supposed to drive a car with the entire driver's side smashed in including shattered windows and doors that wouldn't open. The adjuster was an arrogant jerk. I have more stories, but I think I've made my point. The rates ARE too high."

"I had a claim with Safeco and was injured in the accident and received the best customer service ever. The medical adjuster was very sympathetic to my disability from the accident and was always there to answer my questions and also would answer the phone - no voicemail, some young lady from Indianapolis. I guess there are 2 sides to every story - but mine was a great one"

"Seem to be pretty straight-arrow, but their book keeping can get a little frustrating at times. They'll make a mistake, send me a $10 check for "overpayment", then threaten cancellation for underpayment a week later. So far its been pretty easy to straighten out thru the local agent (main reason for using them) but I'd hate to deal with them strictly via web/phone."

"We found Safeco to be a good insurance company but if you file a claim, look out! We had two, both involving our son. The first one was when his car was parked on the street and a drunk, uninsured driver ran into his car and totaled it. The second was when he backed into a light pole in a parking lot. We expected a rise in our premiums, but they went up 60 %. We would have stayed with Safeco if our premiums had risen somewhat, but not that much. What was even more strange is that the insurance on our car, a 2003 Matrix driven by two 55 year olds had higher premiums than the 2005 Pontiac G-6 driven by our son. I shopped around and bought a policy locally with the same coverage from a good company and our premiums per month are only $10 higher than they were with Safeco before the great premium hike of 2008. After asking around, the consensus is that this is typical of Safeco."

"Difficult to make them move. Somebody set our garage on fire in decembre, we are in February and still they have done nothing. They told us we can pick the company which will make the repaire but when we told them what company we want then they refused and tell us we have to take the company they sent to us (less expensive). They want we take the less expensive company but they don't want to be responsible if they do a bad job (the company they want we take are 12 000 dollars less than the other one they sent to us and the one we want is only 5 000 dollars superior). Our coverage allows us 31 000 dollars but still they don't want to pay. They are very fast to take your money but don't count on them for to be cover, you can say good bye to your property. The adjustor before have any bid had already told us that he was ready to pay 15 000 dollars. He set the price before to know about the real work. When he called us he didn't tell us the other bid is lower, he told us "our bid is lower" (talking about the company he wanted we pick. I think they are not serious at all and I know now they are working only with "their" companies and nobody else (whatever if the job is good or not if it's cheaper. they are not responsible for the job anyway)."

"I do shop around every time my policy is close to expire date. Each time SafeCo is chipper than other companies. They treated my claim very well, but it was very small claim. They have decreased the discount for full upfront payment, so I have to pay more, despite my rate remains the same. I feel it is not fair."

"I have been with the company 8 years. I went with them because I used a local agent in our small town. When I started I had a $10,000 policy. I have added 3 more restaurants and now the policy is $30,000. During that time I never filed a claim and had only 2 workman comp claims totaling less that $3,000 dollars. I finally had my policy reviewed by others. I found that I was way under insured. I was able to double my coverage and go with another major company for $8,000 dollars less per year. What really caused my to write this review is that they sent a $214 dollar outstanding balance to collection. Out of the 7 years I sent them payment infull every January. The $214 was incurred in November when I increased my limits to meet my new landlords requirements. They never sent me a bill. Instead they buried it in the renewal policy which at that time I was not sure if I would renew. I am bitter about the collection notice as you can tell. But I am more mad that I was paying top dollar for probably the worst policy ever. Avoid this company like the plague."

"Do not buy insurance from Safeco. I have had safeco for over 20 years, maybe longer. I tried to file a claim for hail damage to my roof confirmed by a roofer and Safeco's independent adjustor. Denied. Said there had been no hail in my area for over a decade and it has taken them almost a month for them to deny it. They made the IA go back and redo the report. My local agency will not help me at all. I had to do all the calling. No one returns calls. My agent would not even help me file a claim. She gave me an 800 number to call. I am thoroughly disgusted thinking of the insurance company and how quickly they are to accept premiums but will stop at nothing to deny a claim. I repeat. Do not purchase any kind of safeco insurance. If I ever get away from them I will never ever go back"

"My primary problem was I felt I was being treated as a criminal in this matter, not as a policy holder who had just been displaced. "I was buying a new car and tried to get in touch with my agent (who is 4 states away) to find out how much it would cost. The phone rang 4 times, then hung up on me. I tried again, same thing. So I called the 800# (as if I was in an accident), I got an operator who tried to connect me to my agent again, same results, so I called the 800# again. They were about to switch me to my agent until I told them not to bother because they won't pick up. 3 months later, on my current payment coupon, I tried the agent's number again, it now says "The number you are trying to reach has been disconnected"! Yet my payment is STILL going to that address??? Not this month! Keep away from Safeco! It's a scam!"

"Every other house around us has successfully filed claims for hail damage. We are battling Safeco and they are trying to tell us that we are the only house in the neighborhood that wasn't damaged. We've had two contractors tell us that our roof was damaged. We've paid them for over 12 years on our house and two cars, never filed a claim before this, and this is how they treat us."

"My husband and I have had SAFECO for about 6years. We had never filed a claim until a few weeks ago. Our truck hand major wind damage from the strong Santa Ana's. On the phone they were qick to insure us, but now we are getting the run around about our claim. They have halted payment until an investigation is complete. They said it's odd that a vehicle that hasn't been driven has so much damage. They used to be great, when it came to adding vehicles and limits, now they are horrible. I definitley think they are money hungry. They take your money but do nothing in return when it comes to filing and paying a claim. "

"I broke in my car cause the door was locked. I broke the windshield to get in, and Safeco wouldn't even fix my windo when it was damaged. Wanted me to pay a deductible, when i don't have one. RIP OFF. I pay all the time and never use my insurance.. I'm dropping my insurance cause also, they won't fix my flat tire."

"You won't have any problem with them until it's time to file a claim. they become absolutely rude on the phone, they never return your calls, and when you feel all alone and no one cares to help you with your claim and you decide to call your agent, you'll find him a total stanger too. and you get a response such as: sorry I wish I could help, but I don't know how. My car was in an accident, at first their response was "total loss" then they changed their mind that it's fixable, when I told them that I don't want to fix the car just pay me for my damages, first they told me that I have no choice but to repair it, when I refused , they told me ok they will pay for the loss but I will be responsible for my own rental, when I accepted, then they said "sorry we cant cut you a check because you've signed an aggreement to repair the car, which absolutely a lie. now it's almost a month after the accident, I still haven't seen a check and no one returns my calls . Their service is terrible. they are rude and the worst insurance company if you ever have to file a claim. Please DO NOT go we safeco, you'll be sorry. "

The adjuster came out the next day and issued a check for the repairs. He made arrangments for the cleanup company to repair everything. Wow... this is service."

"we have had 2 claims with Safeco and they were handled quickly and couldn't have been more helpful. My car was stolen and I had my daughter's wedding to attend in another state. Safeco provided us with a rental car and and even extended the time for the rental car. (my car was found 2 days before our trip). Safeco did not have to give me an extra week on the rental car. But my car was in no condition to be driven. In fact it was considered a total loss because of the damage from the theft. So they went the extra mile when they didn't have to. The wedding was beautiful and we had a nice rental car thanks to Safeco."

"We asked inspector to come while we were home and he refused, then caused additional damage while inspection it. Said engine was not good but did not even start it or have it inspected by mechanic(we had driven it the day before. Took deduction for damage caused by accident damage he was sent to inspct. Get a different story from every person I speak with. Blue book on my vehicle in fair condition exceeds $3000, They only offered $1800. Liars and thieves"

"Company could not easily settle a claim for windshield damage. Agents don't know the policies and the firm has settled a multi-million dollar standards of practices legal action with the Attorney General's Office in Washington. I complained to the Va AG's office."
