"I've been with Shelter for almost 20 years. Homeowners policy and 2 cars. They reluctantly paid a claim 3 years ago when I had wind and hail damage to my roof that claim took forever to settle and the only reason I was able to do that was they hired an outside adjuster, in that the storm had overburdened their claims department. The agent has changed at least 7 or 8 times over the 20 year period. I guess they don't pay them enough. So ... if you need insurance I would look elsewhere. I will be changing soon, in that I just had another agent quit and the new one will definitely not be with them for very long."

"My house burnt down and they offered me 26000 and I have a appraisal for 57000 My coverage was for 70000 Still waiting on the final offer that I was suppose to have today and hadn't got it I will never do business with them again"

"Do not be fooled by the rates. This insurance company is able to offer low rates because they are not shelling out the money for training employees or agents properly. It took them over a month to review a claim for me while my vehicle was in a tow lot. I filed a complaint and the same people who reviewed my claim reviewed my complaint. Obviously resulting in the same conclusion."

"Been with Shelter for over 13 yrs with home autos. Only claim was for a plug in windshield. Never a claim on home and they just doubled my home policy with no explanation. "

"There claims department is immpossible to deal with. Dont appear to be very educated. Either poorly trained or trained very well to reject things that should be covered. There people have poor communication skills. Overall a bad experience on something that should be a benefit in a claim like a tornado."

"Biggest issue I have is they have raised my homeowners rate by nearly 25% in just two years. I have not filed any claims either."

"after i had my wreck it to 3 weeks for the adjuster to assess the damage.then took another 2 weeks for the check to come in meanwhile i was without a vehicle, and the didnt give me fare market value for the car.i do not recommend this insurance to anyone."

"Adjuster treated us like we were scum. Told us what he would do and we could tear out and start fixing ourselves."

"We filed a claim with Shelter following Hurricane Katrina, for structural damage and lost contents. Shelter did many things improperly, including, but not limited to the following. They lost our reports and proofs of loss; mailed all our estimates and settlement checks as late as possible within the legal limits -and- mailed them to the wrong address; denied coverage for additional living after promising to pay it; denied reimbursement for our personal labor after promising to pay it; did not return phone calls, and refused to state verbally or in writing any reason for denying coverage. Note that after they lost the reports and proofs of loss we had sent regarding the items for which we sought payment, they refused to let us resubmit the paperwork, first on the grounds that the adjuster was "too busy" to review them, and then because they insisted our claim was closed. We were never paid for contents, nor for approximately half the damage that was covered by our policy, and have had to file suit, because their claims supervisor & manager refused to review our case."

"Me and my wife went insurance shoping for my new home and we had an appointment 3 days before closing, we went and pretty much got everyting done, one day after that appointment that agent call me and told me that they cant insure us unless we get our auto insurance from them, at that moment we had to cancel our current contract for our auto insurance and paid 200$ fee and them pay a 230$ downpayment for a total of 430$ that we had to pay that day to switch our auto insurance!!! but they tolt us that we are gonna be saving 70$ every year... everyting because they dont wanna wait two months until our contract for autoinsurance expire, so now we dont have time to do all the paperwork again because our closing day is in less than 48 hours, is funny that i asked that agent what if someone that doesnt have a car calls and ask for home insurance? she answered me that she dont know anyone that doesnt have a car!!!"

"they require a physical.they will increase your premium based on your medical history which they can get from your doctor.Although,the have exellent customer service and keep you updated."

"2 wind storms in 2 months I have to pay deductible two times because they are too cheap to replace the roof anytime the wind blows I have damamge now. DO NOT USE Shelter Ins."

"After a tornado, our home had hail damage and several missing shingles off the back of the house. The adjustor came out and looked at the roof from the ground and told us they would only pay to roof the back of the house. I had a roofing company come out and there was extensive damage on the front & back of the house. Called the agent back and he was very rude. He lied several times about having mailed the check and was very dishonest with us during the entire claim. He even took our $1,000 deductable out of the claim check twice!"

"Had Shelter for 20 years...three claims, 2 auto, 1 home fire. I was never cancelled or rated up. Excellent service and quick NO hassle claims! However later I ran into some finacial trouble and needed to save some $$$. I shopped and found that I was paying almost $700.00 a year more compared to other companies. I had to switch...hated to, but agent would not work with me on lowering rates. If you can afford them...Their a great company!"

"Had Shelter Insurance for a long time for 2 cars. One claim - hail damage. Totaled my aging car so I wasn't happy, but the claims process went smoothly and I had a check quickly. Now that I am seeking homeowners insurance too, it looks like their rate is mid-range and I will go with someone cheaper for now."

"I used this insurance company for 20 years--since I could drive. How do they repay me: by booting me off of my policy for two accidents that occurred within a short time of each other, one of them not my fault. One was a parking lot fender bender and was my fault. The other was caused by a drunk driver and after all the assessments were done it was declared that I was not the at fault party. However before the final assessment, I was kicked off the policy. In the end they said they would sell me a NEW policy but for an inflated rate. Is this how I am repaid for my loyalty and years of accident free driving?"

"I had filed a claim for hail damage which they denied and then I had 2 small claims, one for theft which I found out that only market value was in my policy and they paid out $500 and upped my premium by $300. Then after a water damage claim the next year which they did pay on, they cancelled me. they made it impossible for me to find insurance elsewhere.This insurance is good only if you never have a claim."

"About 5 years ago, I had a small problem with a claim. The agents keep changing. Apparently, they are also not satisfied. I have a very difficult time trying to get real information concerning changes to my policy handled. I am also having a hard time getting my money back for insurance payments already made. "
