"They want to fix anything, I've had tons of roofers tell me my roof has been damaged from storms. Yet they send there guy out and he says the roof is fine. Hmmm what a coincidence. Then they went up on my policy saying that was a claim even though they did not fix anything. This company is a bunch of thieves."

"Denied hail damage claim. We obtained a second opinion restating the damage was due to hail damage. They denied it again, stating the damage was due to footfall. We are turning our claim over to our attorney. We have a 5,000 deductible, 20 plus year of claim free history and they treat us like we're scammers. Horrible customer service."

"I have hail and wind damage that can be seen from the ground. They say they can see zero damage. out of 150 homes in our neighborhood I am 1 of 20 that has not been repaired, even to the point pieces of shingles are coming off. Escalating only makes them upset and you feel as if you have done something wrong. Very poor service."

"They are ALL about money. They say one thing then it's another and send a bill with a due date that is virtually impossible because it wasn't even postmarked until 4 days later. Plus no internet options and phone customer service is a joke. Worst ever."

"My main complaint is that I had insurance with them for 15-20 years then was suddenly dropped because my 25 year old had one accident where he was at fault. This is my main reason for dissatisfaction."

"My 96 and 91 year old parents had a broken pipe and flood damage in their kitchen and basement. State Auto Senior Adjuster came in and said that they would take care of everything. My parents were happy about that. Once STate Auto got the contractors estimate, they began nit picking everything and basically my parents were unable to make the required repairs because there simply was not enough money. Water flooded the kitchen living area and basement. State Auto had their own people come in for an estimate and they didn't even pay to rip out the cabinets in the kitchen. They only would pay to remove the floor cabinets and being 50 year old stick built cabinets, ripping them out would render them useless. State Auto said they would not pay for the upper cabinets and the ripped out floor cabinets would need to be refinished. Meanwhile my elderly parents are out half a kitchen. They are awful to work with so unless you are really desperate, go to a different company. All they want is your premium money."

"We are under Michigan no fault. Originally bought our insurance through Meridian Ins. which was acquired by State Auto. Since being serviced by State Auto for our handicapped sons care payment, we have had nothing but trouble getting our payments in a reasonable length of time. For the prior thirty years with Meridian Ins. we had very little trouble being paid on time. State Auto initially insisted on paying us 3 months in the rears, and now are taking that a step further by being up to 5 weeks past due on that. "

" are not fast food. They do take some investigation. So to think they should be settled in a day is totally unrealistic. Also insurance companies are not repairers. They pay for damages but do not fix the damages. As a homeowner it is your responsibility to take care of your house find contractors. Insurance policies are not maintenance policies. Again as a homeowner you are responsible for keeping up the maintenance on your home."

"hail and high wind damage to roof State Auto would not replace whole roof. The seals on the shingles were broken and 1/4 of roof had shingles blown off. State Auto would only cover the 1/4 of roof and if they did not have the matching shingles they would match it up the best they could. We had adjuster out 3 times and ended up paying out of pocked for the whole roof to be done."

"No communication with adjuster. I have to do all the work with my claim. I am treated like a criminal and feel as if I have been violated twice. Once by the criminal and once by the insurance company."

"For over 25 years I have been their loyal customer. 2 auto's homeowners 3 rental homes 2 business policies and landlord liability policy. In all that time I have filed 2 claims. The 1st was handled in a great manner both timely and fairly wind damage to home roof aprox 10 yrs ago. The 2nd an uninsured motorist claim. Talk about a change Totally unprofessional and acted like it was my wife's fault someone hit her 6 months later they non-renewed my homeowners without any notice or reason I have had it with them. I will take my 7500 a year elsewhere "

"Had two of my companies enclosed transport trailers destroyed by a drunk driver that ran off of the road with no lic. or insurance. Both of my trailers were parked off street and disconnected. After a 6 month ordeal I ended up with one trailer smaller replaced and a letter from State Auto on how I can improve my exposure so this will not happen again........Really......unbelievable business for 16 yrs. with no claims. Terrible company Stay away for them I am still reviewing my options."

"After Hurricane Ike State Auto Homeowners paid zero. Adjustors said the hurricane with 110 mph winds did no damage to my home after paying premiums for 8 years. I would never recommend this company. Texas and Gov Perry R seems to have a cozy relationship with insurance companies and the homeowner has little recourse."

"Despite a flawless record and no accidents State Auto virtually doubled insurance rates over one year. Don't trust their rate quotes which seem to be a game of Bait and Switch."

"In 4 years time I have never filed a claim. Paid my premiums on time every year. In 4 years my premium trippled. I was told it was due to all the bad storms we had in the last couple of years. They had to pay out alot of claims.I told them I had no claims and they said we were all in the same boat. When other people have claims they raise everybodys rates to pay for it.I will never deal with this company again and clearly the Better Business Bureau should step in."

"State Auto Handled everything for a water damage claim we had. They dealt with the contractor on pricing and settlement. Of Course it is always a pain to have claim but State Auto made it a very stressful time much easier. I think that the people that are giving bad reviews about the hail claims probably are ill because they expected to walk away with some extra money in their pocket. "

"This is the WORST experience I have EVER had with an insurance company. They are rude their customer service is poor and pathetic. They screwed me out of 1/2 the value of my vehicle - even though I had full coverage AND someone else caused the accident. My son and I were hurt - I contacted them immediately and it was nothing but a headache from day one. They have misplaced my paperwork don't even have information on my son - even though they were told immediately that he was also in the accident. They are also trying to continue billing me AND they are trying to stick me with the hospital bills. They also stuck me with a 500.00 fee - even though I didn't cause the accident. I am praying to God everyday that this company goes out of business. Please - save yourself some grief and go with a well known/respectable company. "

"Poor record keeping. Sent 3 cancellation notices within 2 years for issues that were not accurate. For example sent a cancellation notice on my house for not having a smoke and burglar alarm system. I do however have a smoke and burglar alarm system. Another time they canceled my policy because someone else was living in my house. This person however I had never heard of. Another clerical error. Another time the canceled my policy for non-payment. Turns out my check had been sitting on someone's desk for two weeks."

"BAD FAITH. Had wind damage to my roof from Hurricane Sandy. Their adjustor had no authority to authorize a claim even though he said he was a supervisor. I was given different reasons for the denial of the claim and the company refused to allow a reinspect. They would not even let me talk to my adjustor's boss. Clearly the strategy is to delay and stonewall claims. I have filed a complaint with the insurance commission and will be taking my business elsewhere when all of this is over. "

"I have been insured with State Auto for 25 years and up until April 2012 I had always been happy with the customer service and having had 2 previous homeowners claims and 1 auto claim in the past 25 years found their claims service and claims handling to be fair and equitable. However in April of 2012 I had a homeowners hail loss and 1 year later I'm still having to fight with this company to get a fair settlement. They have tried nearly every strong arm tactic they can to not pay to what is required to properly repair the damages to my home. They have been guilty of "unfair claims practices" and when that was proven and verified by the Kentucky Department of Insurance they are still attempting to "lowball" the repair costs to my home. I've had to resort to consulting an attorney who advises State Auto may have exposure to a separate Bad Faith claim based on their actions. This is not the same company it was even 5 years ago. I would strongly recommend anyone to avoid this company when looking for an insurance company. You learn how good your insurance company is when you have a claim and this one fails miserably when it comes to customer service and customer satisfaction. Read the independent customer satisfaction surveys on this company 62% of their customers rate this company negatively. AVOID State Auto AT ALL COSTS"

"My wife and I are both military members. We had our home catch on fire. State auto sent out a insurance rep. to inspect the home for insurance adjustment. It took then two days after the fire to even come out and we are still waiting for five days now to even see if they would cover the home in this situation. We have called the insurance agent. multiple times. "No answer".. The worst experience ever with a insurance company...."

"The deductible clause does not apply to this company. They disregard quotes. They tell you what they will pay then subtract the deductible. It will be much lower than the quote."

"Due to being over the age of 45 we were given by State auto unsolicited by us a free Prime of life polciy to use for things like cell phone and computer replacement with no deductible. Due to the fact that we have made 3 cell phione claims to teh tune of 300 we were told they are canceling our homeowners policy. Very poor customer service"

"I added my minor son to my policy. Never received a phone call or letter. Received a bill for 400 percent increase. With an excellent driving record and credit. Was not able to get a hold of anyone till Monday. This is very bad customer service."

"After a huge sewer back-up/flood in my comunity over 100 claims were made with State Auto. All were denied. Other companies payed out and were seen driving around town to deal with their customers first hand not State Auto I have not seen one rep. in town yet. In customer service/public relations they get a huge "F"."

"My past insurance company I should have stayed with them would send a tow truck out or take care of a flat tire for me. State Auto has me do the leg work. This is full coverage This kind of customer service is inadequate for a female when stranded and very unrealistic if no phone is available to call for help. I have been lucky to have had my situations happen during the day and had help from other motorists. I will go back to my past insurance as soon as possible."

"Have had the same company State Auto for 13 years without a claim. Recently had several hail storms and damaged roofs of every home in my neighborhood. The adjuster did not even get on the roof. He took pictures from a step ladder. A roof inspector got on the roof and provided several pictures showing severe hail and wind damage. We are being forced to settle this in court. Bad company and agency"

"I currently carry multiple policies with State Auto Insurance. Recently my house was flooded due to failed storm drains. I have lived in this house for 9 years and never had an issue with flooding as I do not live in a flood zone. Apparently my policy does not cover ground water damage...even though my area was in a FEMA state of emergency. The damage is approximately 5000 dollars which is a small amount to pay out if compared to the amount of money they will be losing when my personal business is gone. Not to mention policies owned by my family and the people that I warn off from this company."

"It has been three months and I still do not have my vehicle. They do not want to pay out I done everything in my power to provide them the information they repeatedly request. Half way during the claims process the claims representative tried to coerce me into admiting fault of collision and before she hung up she repeatedly said it is YOUR FAULT over and over again before she said good bye. I wonder if they record those conversations because this is a serious serious violation in my opinion. She was not doing a job or any job she was a bully which representates what State Auto is crooks and bullies. And no this is not to find ANY information about good and bad experience w/ State Auto. Truth is this company are nothing but crooks and there is no positive news about them anywhere. "

"When I filed a claim they were extremely hard to collect from. I had 29000 worth of equiptment stolen and they payed me 0 nothing they are a complete ripoff. Do not buy insurance from them or you will regret it as I did. They were very rude and short. Told me I had to provide every invoice. My office burned down 2 years ago with all my receipts. They just screwed me out of everything. A rip off. I am going to contact my good buddy the asst. attorney general of nc and see if I can do something to protect the people of NC from these crooks"

"We lost our house due to contamination of formaldehyde from water and they turned claim down without even investigating. We have never seen an adjuster at our house.We have brought suit against state auto and they have offered to settle for small amount.Very small amount. we have lost two years of our lives and our home and all contents and will spend every penny we have in fighting thie company in court."

"The Company paid the claim and then went after the other parties insurance company Met who battled them every step of the way. Their insured was killed in the car wreck but was the at fault party having run a stop sign and hitting two vehicles. Met also battled the other party. "

"in my thirty yrs. Of having homeowner insurance they are the worst. The best comment I heard when the claim was filled due to structural damage caused by snow was you people in that state probable have no building codes. I can assure everyone in the US we have more building codes then over half the Us states. We had to hire our own engineer and State Auto said they didnt agree with the findings of their engineer but still would not pay the claim. They are only good at sending you your bill They take thousands from you THEY ARE NOT A COMPANY WHO CARE I THINK BERNIE MADOFFS RELATIVES RUN AND WORK FOR THE COMPANY."

"They raised my deductible from 250 to 1000 - said they were making ALL customers 1000 because of the number of claims they were receiving. Well I have had 1 claims and have had their insurance and that of their predecessor they merged and State Auto was the survivor for over 20 years. I went ahead with renewal for this year - premium jumped despite the high deductible but will do my due diligence for next year and I am outta here The only reason I stayed this year was because of my agent - have known her most of my life and trust her completely."

"They scan your credit report continuously. If anything shows up that even remotely suggests that there might be an increased risk, then your premium will double. Never had to make a claim with them. No accidents or tickets. My daughter got her license at 19, no accidents or tickets. They knew within days of her getting it and I got a bill for an additional 600 dollars which doubled my 6 month premium to $1200. I had my daughter excluded because she will not be driving our car and will be moving out in 6 weeks anyway. We will see if the premium goes back down. "

"Had tornado/ wind storm damage. Took 6 days for an adjuster to come out . I did all the foot work to search for tree cutters, roofers,electricians,chimney repair people,etc. Made at least 6 calls to get the ball rolling. "

"have been with state auto for 25 yrs.2 cars and 2 homes had homeowners on both houses w/spec permission to agent because we bought second. I had a burgulary and they are not wanting to pay for losses unless i have pictures or receipts.I had 250.00 ded and they are going to pay me 60%of 9300.00 and i thought i had ins lol"

"There was a hail storm in my area of Ohio less than 10 miles from there home office. I knew from the time the adjustor showed up that I was not going to get a fare adjustment on my roof. They paid an engenior $1135.00 to defend the adjustor. After 8 months I am not getting my claim paid. I now have a new insurance company!"

"VERY slow in responding to our claim. It has been 2 weeks and I am still waiting for claims paper to be sent in the mail. We paid and extra $200.00/year or added insurance in case our basement flooded. Lost power for 4 hours during a very heavy storm. Run as fast as you can from this company!!!! "The accident occurred on the 13th of July, and was finally "settled" yesterday- 7/28/10. The adjustor was unresponsive, all accountability was shifted to an "independent adjustor" and calls and emails went unanswered. I have been with the company nearly 3 years, and will be leaving as soon as I get the policies set up with another company. The price was good, the service is lousy, and it proves you get what you pay for."

"Have had coverage with this Company for many years with no problems. In 2004 State Auto closed their Missouri Claims Office, laying off employees, to centralize their claims office. Service has been horrible since. Will not renew! "

"State Auto has repeatedly lost payments. When called to investigate the agents have hung up the phone during the call. Our furnace went up in flames. I was able to put the fire out before any damage was caused to the house. The agent said I should have taken pictures of the fire before putting it out. "

"Had a hail/wind damage claim with them. They would only pay for half of the roof to be replaced. Did not pay for damaged gutters or leaks caused by damage. Claims rep was very rude to my contractor saying he was over charging. Had to fight to get them to cover the repair. Most of the other homes in my neighborhood got new roofs. My parents had signed up with them too. After all the problems I had, they canceled with them and moved on. Once my claim was resolved I ran from them as fast as I could."

"My wife was involved in a parking lot accident. We went through State Auto to repair our vehicle. Repairs were completed and paid quickly. They also recovered 100% of our deductible and damages from the other party within weeks. Very professional. These comments about hail to shingles. It's probably because they actually looked at the damage instead of just paying off of crooked contractor estimates. "

"It's been almost a year since an accident that was not my fault ad although they paid the claim, they have made no attempt to recover the loss from the other drivers insurance company. They are inept at following up to get statements etc from the driver at fault."

"I've had State Auto for many years. I had an accident in my driveway, I backed into a visitors truck. I spoke with the owner of the truck I hit and asked, did my insurance company take care of you? He said he got the estimate and faxed it to the insurance company,a month later his truck is still not fixed, no check, no nothing. He said that he has called several times only to get an answering machine. Finally, State Auto called and ask him if he was a friend or family member. They said if he were that would not be responsible for the claim. He also said that my insurance company wants to replace his truck door with junk yard one, for almost half of what the claim is for. I cannot believe this is happening. This is what we pay insurance for, our claims settled in a timely matter. One month later and the man's truck is still not fixed is not acceptable. I will be looking for a new insurance company. "

"House fire destroyed almost everything. We had two reputable Companys give us estimates to repair home both within $3000.00 of each other approx. $133,000.00 to repair. State auto had independant appraisor come in he estimated it at approx. $80,000.00 then depricated that dowm to approx $60,000.00 not enought to even start repairs. Our policy read actual replacement. Very upsetting and stressfull, they made a terriable situation worse. Would not recommend State Auto Insurance Company."

"This company is a yoke! don't walk but RUN to another company. They denied my obvious hail damage claims. All the other insurance companies my neighbors had paid their claims promptly and effortlessly. According to State Auto my house was the only one with no damage in my neighborhood it also was the only house insured by State Auto. "

"do not sign up with State Auto- they might appear cheaper but they will cheat, lie, etc. to not pay your claim. "

"We bought our house last year and went with State Auto because of their reasonable pricing. However, now a year later they have more than double our rates and can not give us an explanation. We have had no claims, no changes in credit, etc. On top of that, I have since found out that they actually started our policy 20 days before we bought our house when we stressed that they not start it until the exact day that we bought the house. When I called and pointed it out the representatives for at least the tenth time, the rep told me that they did not know how to answer my question and referred me to someone else who has very short hours. I definitely will not be renewing!"
