"I will write this about me but I am only one person in thousands or maybe millions. Millions is more likely since this includes people from all over the world. I have always been a hard working person and picking a career as an auto technician and working hard to advance thru the years to the highest level as a Toyota Technician should prove this fact. I want you all to know this because I am a tax payer, voter, father, husband, brother, and law abiding citizen. Here is my story. Seven years ago while I was at work, I fell down. I started dropping things from my hands. I noticed that I was gradually losing strength. I wasn't myself anymore, and slowly losing the ability to do my job. I was paid on a commission type basis. So if I couldn't work as hard and fast as usual then my pay amount dropped. I fault for a few more years as I struggled to continue. Of course I had medical insurance, short term disability, long-term, and death insurance. I have paid for these policies for over 30 years. About four years ago, I had to leave my job due to illness and it was really becoming unsafe for myself to even be in a shop. During these years I have seen a handful of Doctors that struggled with diagnosing my issues. A clear diagnosis was uncertain and Unum isurance company demanded one. But what these doctors did agree on was that I was disabled and continuing to get worse. I was unable to continue to perform a mechanics job by far and the doctors noted this in their records. I was eventually Diagnosed after years and multiple doctor visits, I even took a plane to Rochester, Minnesota to the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion. I am now considered a patient there also. I hope you are still reading along and I'm not boring you so far. Well, I find this very hard to say, but I have ALS disease. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease. As you most likely know, My days are numbered and there's No sunshine at the end of my rainbow. But this is not a pity party about me. My whole life was about providing for my loved ones. I am so saddened that I feel that I let everyone down because now they provide for me.This was not in my game plan. I had UNUM insurance whom has worked over time on denying my claim. They ignored my doctors opinions and records, they went way low on my estimated yearly salary, and they prolonged any judgement about me collecting any funds. which also cost me my savings. They flooded my doctors offices with letters and ringing phone calls for info that they could use against me. I had one doctor out of about 7 that I have seen in the very early stages of this disease that I had seen while I was still working that told UNUM that she didn't feel that I was disabled. I wasn't far enough along to confirm any diagnosis. She also didn't care to research my illness. So I fired her. Unum used her records as their source to refuse my situation. I had to sue UNUM. My attorney told me that I couldn't sue for damages because Congress passed a law that prevented these types of lawsuits. Unum caused me so much stress that my health was really taking a hit. The attorney said that due to a bill that congress passed stated that I can only sue Unum to force them to honor the policy that they sold me. This means that Unum has no recoil to deny claimant claims. So they Steal and rob from their customers constantly everyday. This attorney was going to take benefit money's from me that was rightfully mine. This attorney recently dropped my case. He said that there's just not enough money in it to fight them any further. Unum gets to deny me, keep their money. I get NOTHING.... My family gets NOTHING. When I die and I will, There's NO insurance money to help them that I paid for for so many years. I now live on my wifes income. She works over-time everyday. My mother died about nine years ago and left me about 100k dollars that I put in saving, it's all gone now, spent on bills. We have been searching our home for stuff to sell. I live in Spring Texas in a nice 250k house that we have called home for so many years that is now going up for sale. I was denied Social Security benefits also as a normal thing that I have been told. My attorney has dropped appealing this also. I guess what I am trying to tell you is that, I understand that people shouldn't be able to sue insurance companies for millions of dollars or for profit. But if there's a law that states that a person can sue an insurance company for POOR FAITH If Proven for five times the benefit amount, then these insurance companies wouldn't mess us over so badly. Just maybe they would be forced to take care of all the others that are legitimately disabled like they promise to do so in their policies that they sell us.I have read so many other people's comments about what Unum has done to them. I even read one about an ex-employee of Unum getting messed over by them. This is a crime or should be. I wish you all good health now and in the future. And I prey to GOD that you never get sick or have Umun insurance or any other insurance company that is in business to steal from us. Don't ever put yourselves in our positions. Thank You for reading my story. My wishes is for everyone to take notice of this and copy and paste it. then send it to anyone and everyone on the internet, Government offices, State Reps, etc.We the people need help Badly. I hope that I'm still around to see change in this. Thanks Again, [signed]"

"I was sold Critical Illness Insurance from UNUM through my employer, we were told it would pay out a lump sum to help with expenses for things like Cancer, Heart attack, ETC. I was diagnosed with Malignant melanoma which is cancer and they denied my claim, they stated that my cancer had not become bad enough for them to pay out. so I had five thousand dollars coverage supposedly. they didn't pay me a dime and now I am left with thousands of dollars in bills from the four surgeries I've had. I would never recommend this insurance company to anyone."

"I have never seen a company more completely inept than Unum. A family member of mine has been struggling with a medical issue recently, and her employer contracts with Unum for short-term and long-term disability benefits. It has taken them no less than 6 months to process and approve her claim, which was fully covered by the policy that her employer has with Unum. It is understandable that it may take up to a month to approve a claim, as it does take time to requestgather records and to review the details of the claim and send it through proper channels of approval. This has taken MONTHS longer than was necessary, largely due to lack of action, lack of follow up, and lack of communication between several Unum employees. No one seems motivated to do anything quickly, and once a task is completed i.e. records request or a request between departments it is left to sit for days or weeks before follow-up is done. It is frustrating that the short-term claims and long-term claims are handled by separate departments who do not have access to records from the other department, even if it relates to the same patient and medical issue. It is understandable that these may need to be handled separately, although records should be readily available to both departments working on the same claim. In addition to this, there is no urgency whatsoever to communicate between the two departments. In this case, the long-term claim was approved, and the patient was told that they were waiting on short-term approval before sending any funds at all. However, no one in long-term reached out to anyone in short-term to advise them of the approval or trigger the next step in approval for the short-term claim. This delayed the short-term approval by 2 additional weeks. Funds have still not been received, even though both claims have been approved at this point. In the meantime, the patient has had no income at all. Her medical issues have caused significant stress and disruption in her life. To have no income for 6 months and deal with creditors, lack of grocery money, lack of funds to pay utilities and rent, and the ever-present possibility of homelessness is absolutely ludicrous. This has been more harmful to her than helpful. Because of her medical situation, she has not always been able to make daily phone calls to follow up with Unum and try to facilitate records requests, answer questions, and generally try to push the process along. When follow up calls were made, they were often not returned for days, or not returned at all until another follow up call was made by the patient. It is clear that Unum employees are either significantly overworked, or simply not interested in doing their jobs. Their action or lack thereof has a drastic effect on the lives of the patients. They need to be reminded of this. Since the opening of this claim, the patients employer has thankfully contracted with a different company to provide these benefits. This is a welcome change and provides relief at the prospect of any future claims, as any other company in the business is surely a better choice than Unum."

"Do not purchase any sort of coverage from this company. I have been fighting with them for almost 90 days now regarding two open claims I have. Each time I call, they request a document that my doctor already sent them. Each time I call, they claim that they reached out to me and did not get a response. I do not get any help from their customer service, they redirect you to to their customer portal, which doesn't explain what you need to do. They owe me 8,000 in disability plus another 800 in hospital stay. They look for any reason not to pay you. I know that all insurance companies may do similar practices however when I had MetLife coverage and paid less monthly for it, I did not have these issues. I am in my mid-thirties, have now had 3 hospital stays and one surgery. I work for a commission-based company so if I don't work, I don't get paid. I have had to take out loans against my 401k - all because this company will NOT PAY OUT what is owed to me. I cannot stress this enough - STAY AWAY FROM THESE SCAMMERS."

"UNUM should never be considered for benefits by anyone. They provide policies intended to protect injuredill employees in their most vulnerable time. However, through doctor harassment and bogus policy provisions they add additional insult to your injury. They sent a complete drunk to my home for an occupational visit and a month later with no call or notice discontinued my payments. Any company using UNUM as their short term or long term disability carrier should be ashamed and if they are not ashamed they are in cahoots with a joke of a company."

"Purchased this 'whole life' policy for myself and my husband 30 years ago as my husband was a TWU Local 100 Member and employee of MABSTOA. Husband died 20 years ago and company paid life insurance claim readily. Continued my premium payments. My bad - did not realize that policycompany in intervening years was sold and whole life policies were converted to universal life policies and premiums just keep going up. I just got an invoice telling me that I have to pay them 954. now to keep my 78K universal life insurance policy AND up my monthly payments to 210month from the current 61month. What are they doing with the investments supporting this insurance How are they managing this pool that I now have to keep paying more and with surprise letters pay close to 1,000 now or lose a policy that I have had for 30 years Not nice and professionally not well managed. Bye Bye Unum Keep my 20 years of premiums."

"I was on short term disability for a while and had to switch to long term disability. My long term disability was supposed to kick in, and they denied me one week before it should have kicked in, so now i am getting no paychecks when I am sick. Long term disability said i was no longer disabled as of February 6th, but i continued to receive payments under my short term disability policy. Both policies are exactly the same except for the elimination period, so how can i be disabled under one policy, but not disabled under another Unum keeps telling me its because of the way the policy is written, but when i show them how the policies are the same with regards to how they determine if someone is disabled, they cannot explain how i can be disabled by one department but not another. WORST company i have ever dealt with, and i have dealt with a lot of companies in my line of work."

"My mother has long term care insurance from Unum. Although there was a lot of paperwork and phone calls, I was always treated politely and professionally by the agent. It always seemed like she was trying to help, which she did. My mother's care at her assisted living residence is being covered by Unum. I'm sorry others didn't have the good experience we had."

"They will deny your claims. As often as possible. Technicalities that are not stated on any literature that I have. One representative will say yes you should be paid sent in claim and denied because was in the hospital for same problem. Do not trust them, anything to screw you out of what you should be paid. AFLAC is much better then UNUM switching back to AFLAC"

"I have whole life hospital indemnity insurance which covers hospital stays, ER visits, any procedures while in hospital - basically whatever your normal insurance wont cover - they decided to deny my claim stating that I had no coverage - EVEN THOUGH I PAY FOR IT ON EVERY CHECK. I was in the hospital for 9 hrs, missed 2 days of work with documentation and had plenty of labs and diagnostic test done to make sure I was OK to return to work, and they are trying to get out of paying my claim. WHY ELSE would I have them"

"Worst company and service for life and accident insurance. This company overcharged me 430.72 for the policy and issued a refund check that was overdue for cashing. I called in 4 times for it over the past 4 . Every time, I was told that the check would be re-issued and the manager would call me back if any question. I never see the check issued and Nobody ever called me from UNUM. This company just simply hold my money there and not give me back. DO NOT EXPECT THIS COMPANY WILL PAY YOUR BENEFIT WHEN YOU NEED"

"Run away from UNUM. FAST This is what is happening to me..and seems to be the standard from UNUM. UNUM has paid me 2 mos. of long term benefits after my becoming disabled. UNUM says I have to pay them back from my SS. Or my retirement.Or any other source of what UNUM considers income. And check this out...UNUMs REP TOLD ME THAT THEY CAN APPROXIMATE FUNDS THAT UNUM BELIEVES I MAY HAVE may have COMING IN FROM SOME OTHER SOURCE AND ARBITRARILY REDUCE MY MONTHLY PAYMENTS THAT WAY TOO Is this legalAnd if I don't sign the Benefit Payment Option form UNUM will reduce my benefit to 100 monthly. This form is a lien that assumes I will lie to UNUM and asking me to give UNUM permission to monitor my bank account. so that they may automatically remove funds from there in the future And to give up my right to take legal recourse. UNUM did not inform me of this fact until my short term disability payments were finished AND I had receivedand paid bills with... my first long term disability payment. UNUM actively pushed me towards filing SS and after I told them I was currently in the appeal process UNUM tried to get me to drop my lawyer who was pursuing SS on my behalf so that theyUNUM could 'help' me with my case instead.I had to tell them 3 times, at least, that I was not firing my attorney. I spoke to a rep about this form who said UNUM would send me a different form that did not call me a liar nor ask me to relinquish my legal rights to recourse when they sent me a copy of the policy. UNUM has not yet done so although I did receive the copy of just the policy. This is the first time I have seen a copy of the policy although I have been making premium payments for 11 years through my employer. To my knowledge my employer never offered me a copy of the original policy or I would have NEVER wasted my money on this mess once I read it...I think UNUM is a dispicable company operating on bad faith and and slight of hand."

"This is not an insurance company they practice bad faith comstantly. Delays are the norm and they have constantly asking for more information about everything. The company is so bad Federal sanctions were set against it and they still don't follow them and have been caught. My question is why is this headache allowed to do business in this state as a matter of fact there are a couple of attorney on Piedmont in Atlanta that mention Unum in their ad on the net. I signed up for them at work thinking that since I work at a major hospital that they did have decent short term disability WRONG. I am now 100% disabled through the Veterans Administration and Unum has yet to fulfill its obligatiion. They are the worst company I've ever seen. As a final note Enron was more honorable than Unum because this company is cheating the disabled and having the Star of Georgia pick up the bill."

Their appeal process is internal and their job is to insure that they don't pay out any money. I have been fighting with them for almost a year. They do admit that my disabilities are real. They hide behind laws meant to protect average people. They are the biggest ripoff and theives. Stay away from them. They only care about their bottom line not the insured."

"Unum employees lie are trained to lie and lie so that they can make more money while denying benefits to customers who have legitimate claims and for which they paid. This company employs sociopaths who are hostile and sarcastic. They obviously are interested in only their bottom line and have a conflict of interest in that it is to their benefit to deny and their detriment to approve customer's claims. Everything that has been in the news about Unum is true. I have experienced something I thought only happened in the movies. What's most insulting is that they obviously consider me to be enormously stupid their lies are so shallow and inconsistent only a chimpanzee would not see through them. After Unum hung up even the girl from the Drs. office stated that she hates having to deal with them because every time she sees paperwork come through that the patients STD company is UNUM she knows shes going to have issues. Although the process was tedious I have found that I am always treated with respect and kindly. I appreciate the fact that ONE representative handles my claim and I am not sent into a general queue where I have to explain everything from the top each time. Although we have nearly went belly-up while receiving the meager 190.00 short-term amount for 6 months I still live in my home and have some food in the kitchen. Although the business of disability insurance by nature is a slow and meticulous process Unum has in fact taking the extra steps to treat me like a human going through a hellish loss of functions. For this I say thank you and would recommend Unum coverage to friends and/or family. "

Let me add that that ability is not something I can do on a regular basis, due to my pain. So after 35 years of being a registered nurse, I was expected to find a job as a low paid laborer, even though my policy specifically said they would provide coverage if I could not work as a nurse"

"Difficult to file claim. You will never collect on disability claims unless you are in hospice and even then it may be contested. This is a collection agency for premium dollars. Change companies while you can. "

"Have paid my premium for over 20 years. When I needed help I was not only denied but the letter was insulting to boot. I have hired an attorney and this process has lasted almost a year so far and I am still paying the premium. I have no doubt the will refuse to pay. Thanks for all the non help UNUN> RUN away from this company."

" Do not purchase a policy from Unum. Even if you would receive benefits, their claims handling practices will grind you into the ground. I purchased disability insurance from them to help me should I become disabled and need help. They are my #1 barrier to recovery demanding the same informaton over and over again saying they never received it. They call my home only to hang up when the phone is answered. Every month, they are late on disability payment and pay seemly only when I call. Other services purchased in my policy are denied or ignored. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THEM!"

"No negative comments. Paid claim timely as long as we provided records requested."

"In order to collect on your disability claim you need to be in hospice or a wheelchair. Otherwise, expect private investigators to follow you. Your claim will almost certainly be denied. Save the aggravation, use another company."

"Unum has been a life saver. I have a neurological condition that finally made it impossible for me to work. Unum has been a bright spot in an otherwise horrible situation. "

"too much paperwork.Thet constantly bother you while you try to get well. This policy is a std policy"

"This company does STD claims for my employer. They are terrible. You sign authorizations so they can talk to your physician yet they badger you every wk for more info(never call the MD) while you are trying to get well. They send late letter i.e monday afternoon stating your STD is cut off Tuesday unless they get more info (yet you just sent info). No explanation of decisions. Its a constant uphill battle while you are trying to heal. They will only OK 1-2 wks at a time even for the most extensive illness or surgery. 5 other people in my company had the same experience. "

"Absolutely outrageous company, sociopathic organization. Where is the Federal government? Federal judges slam UNUM again and again- see "Merrick vs. Paul Revere" "James C. Mahan" judge- yet this completely unethical company is still in business. Read this case, it can be downloaded. It is enlightening!"

"It's hard to really access the information you are searching for in their database. Have read several review about this company and have decided to drop my policy."

"The company interfered with my rights to policy conversion after my employer closed the manufacturing plant; the employer has international standing. I could not get a conversion application and lost my 31 day conversion rights. But after reading their reviews, it would be better to find an ethical company for insurance. Makes me wonder about the employer too."

"UNUM seems to make a practice of making sure all disability claims with validity are thrown over to social security disability. I doubt they pay out on man of their policies"

"Don't buy a disability policy from this company. They only want premiums and never want to pay valid claims. There are likely not more complaints against them because legal settlements usually require a nondisclosure clause."

"I got denied for short term without much explanation. They have dragged out the appeal process by saying they never received information. They have also denied two other people that work with me. They are quick to take your money but not give it back!!!"

"Our policy is for Nursing Home Insurance and when taken out, the premium was supposed to NEVER raise, but they got by that by saying they raised EVERYONE'S in Iowa. I've heard they have had numerous(?) claims filed against them for lack of pymt. Just trying to verify and from whom they refused to pay these multimillion dollar claims?"

"They will do anything they can not to pay your claim."

"Unum will do everything in their power to deny your benefits. They will engage you in months and months of paper work, doctors reports which they will say they never received or are not satisfactory. It is impossible to get through their heirachy to reach a supervisor. They are listed under one of the largest insurers in the US. Yet, they been successfully ligation against them and a class action suit in the millions. They have given me nothing but heart ache, while I am already diagnosed with 3 serious and documented medical problems. "
