"Don't expect CareFirst to do anything resembling good customer service. I agree with many of the complaints from other customers in this survey and that's been while we've been trying to apply for the insurance."

"Web site is confusing and hard to use. Information is scarce and disjointed. No one answers the phone when you call. Web site randomly denies access to information. Confusing instructions about policies. Overall bad company and do not choose them."

"I was a policy holder for 3 years untill i got laid off. I then applied for an individual policy. It took them a month to review my application which they then turned down for very spurious reasons. Their phone representatives were abrupt and unhelpful during this time.I consider this company to be no better than a criminal organization and it is barbaric that that a healthy adult like myself cannot get health coverage in a this so called developed society."

"The only reasons health insurance companies are involved in healthcare is to make a PROFIT. They add ZERO VALUE and should be eliminated from the equation. This company mishandles claims and provides a very low level of service. It makes socialized medicine look good. "

"Bad news from beginning to end. Long wait to talk to customer service. Recurring problem with lost check that Carefirst had cashed but did not apply to accountand told when I cancelled policy that they required more notice and that I would have to pay another month."

"I gave up after 8 months of just trying to get CareFirst to even acknowledge that they had received my claim...after sending it in 5 times Everything has been a battle and I expect the worse. I cannot believe a company can operate with such blatant disregard for consumers."

"When I first enrolled for health insurance coverage with Carefirst Bluecross BlueShield in Jan 2008 my premium was about 400 a month. From March 2012 it is 790.00. Almost 100% increase in premium in 4 years. I am sick of this insurance provider. "

"They can not seem to handle processing even a simple physical without repeated resubmissions and visits to the office. It is my opinion they game the system by making it difficult to get things paid IN Hopes you will give up and pay what is covered."

"Extremely inefficient considering high premiums. Customer service is a joke"

"Over six months have gone by without any resolution to my dispute."

"They told the hospital and our health care provider that we were covered. Our claim was denied. They stuck us with thousands of dollars in medical bills. Run from them! Our former insurance company was wonderful. We never had any hassles from them. This company is a nightmare of gum-snapping entry level workers. "

"Most unreliable customer service I have ever dealt with. Wait times on the phone are extremely long and it takes months to resolve basic issues. Please avoid them at all cost. "

"I had problems getting my payments properly processed and my policy was cancelled before it got temporarily straightened out. This is the most incompetent company I have ever experienced from top to bottom. Find another health care provider and stay healthy."

"Rates skyrocketed at the time they are making record profits. I just got a letter saying they had overpaid my doctor in 2007 by $67.00 and asked me to repay it!!!"

"Two claims I filed in April, 2010 are still being processed by Carefirst in September, 2010. I submitted all of the documentation showing that a hospitalization was an emergency when I filed the claim; however, I learned that the documentation was separated from the claim and it was denied. I am now in the appeal process. My biggest complaint is the time it takes for Carefirst to do anything. It took 20 days for my appeal to go from a Correspondence Analyst to the Appeal department. There are too many layers of bureaucracy at Carefirst. "

"We recently were informed of a huge rate increase of greater than 20% on 11/30/09 stating it would take effect on 1/1/2010. This equals an additional 193.00 a month!!!!! I am a nurse(no benefits) with a self employed husband - insured through CareFirst back in 1989- I am going to send a query to the MD Insurance commiss. It has been over 30 days since the notice so this may be for naught."

"I just received a rate notification that as of Dec 1 my policy will go up 25%!! It seems like they want to gouge the customer while this health care debate is going on. I am not sure how they feel it is ok for such a huge increase. I have been to the doctor once this year for a regular checkup and have not had any health issues."

"The premium fees are subject to enormous increases with very little notice. I asked for a better rate with a higher deductible amount, and was told the monthly premium would be MORE than the lower deductible. Makes not sense."

"I simply wanted to add my husband to the policy. It has been over 60 days and it only takes an avearage of 30. Every week when I call I am told that it is being sent to a supervisor and/or underwriting. Yet my husband had no insurance. No one knows what is going on and keeps saying next week."

"MOST INCOMPETENT COMPANY I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH!!!! Avoid at all costs. If you call them with a question, EVERY SINGLE person you talk to will have a DIFFERENT answer, and NOTHING ever gets done. "

"Have an insurance broker assist you in your buying decision. You pay the same premium as working with the company direct but they can show you all of your options and keep you informed when you need it!"

"ABSOLUTE WORST INSURANCE COMPANY TO GET AHOLD OF EVER"

"I submitted a claim myself and DID NOT assign benefits to the provider. Carefirst paid the provider in spite of that, argued with me about their right to do so, and refused to let me speak with a supervisor. Just for the record, I was assertive but not aggressive. I used to work for another BCBS, so I was very careful about filling out the paperwork properly, and expected to be paid. I did NOT expect to have a rep argue with me and for them to refuse to let me speak with a supervisor."

"I called before I received treatment with a psychologist to make sure it would be covered in my plan and I was assured it would be. Two months later I got a rejection notice for missing paperwork. My doctor immediately filed everything they asked for. That was 3 months ago and they are still "investigating". I am told it could take 6 more months. "

"I have been dealing with the same claim for more than 6 months. After several stall tactics and an initial denial of my claim, Carefirst asked me to submit documentation of treatment from my provider. This documentation has been sitting in the Carefirst office for more than 60 days and they say that a nurse has still not reviewed my claim. My claim is completely within the coverage of my plan, and I even checked with Carefirst before treatment to make sure it was covered. I do not suggest anyone work with Carefirst if they plan on filing a claim of any kind."

"I am on the Federal Government's Care First family plan. Service is prompt and the company honors all plan promises."

"I used a "Preferred Provider" but was required by them to pay up front for the service. I have been trying to get reimbursed by CareFirst for the last 6 months. Each time I call I am told that it is being processed and to wait 14 to 21 business days. Nothing every changes and no one can tell me what is wrong with the claim. Terrible service. "

"HORRIBLE. i was insured with them for a year or so without issue. one month i came down with a very painful eye infection, and made a doctor's appointment. i paid for my insurance once every three months. after i made the appointment, i realized that the bill i usually receive in the mail was a few days late, so i called carefirst to make sure everything was okay. nope, not okay. they CANCELLED my health insurance three months prior with NO notice to me, and for NO reason. i was uninsured, and no one at CareFirst could tell me why. carefirst cashed my previous payment, but they didn't apply it to my insurance. again, nobody could offer an explanation as to why this happened. and, to make life really easy, carefirst initially refused to refund me the payment i had made that they cashed but didn't apply. they offered to apply it to my future payments, but in order to re-new i had to pay for the months i wasn't covered - doesn't that make sense? obviously, i switched insurance companies immediately. now, my wife, who i begged to change companies, is having problems. she needed emergency medical attention, and carefirst refuses to cover the bill. thanks carefirst! also, their customer service sucks, their phone menu tends to disconnect you, and they are more expensive than their competitors. avoid avoid avoid!"
